QuoteMathijs 4) Any decent guitarist knows how to get a great rhythm sound with the guitar volume pot on 8, and a great solo sound with the pot on 10, especially with the vast amount of great amps the Stones have lying around. With any good Deluxe or Twin its easy to get a great rhtyhm and lead guitar sound just using your guitar's volume. Agreed! I'm not a pro, but when I play guitar with bands

Good interview, thanks! Still, I can't help but think Keith's downplaying every thing he's asked about. In his view, he's never had a problem ever in his life (except possibly with cops) and everybody involved had a fantastic time all the way through.

I think technology make the Stones newer albums a bit duller (I'm a huge fan of 70s production values anyway), but I agree with Silver Dagger -- mostly it's the songwriting. It's a combination of the two, plus their playing is a bit more boring ... it's a matter of taste, but I think everyone in the Stones played better in '72 than they do now. Also, back then they had Nicky/Ian, Bill and Mick T.

Looks like a great mixture of songs, though I'm not really buying boxes and compilations with album tracks and hit singles on them. I'd rather have the albums and stand-alone outtakes records and live albums, or albums with bonus tracks.

Kinda tells us how they value A Bigger Bang these days. Even though I'm a pretty die hard Taylorite and a huge fan of the old Stones, I'm always interested in hearing their newer songs played live. They aren't as worn out and predictable as their warhorses.

Average songwriting from a good Stones era.

It was the first time Stray Cat Blues was done live. And it may have been the best live version ever so far.

True. That's a crazy setlist by today's Stones standards. They would never attempt such a thing if they did a free show after a long lay-off these days. Back in the sixties, two and a half years without touring was a long time, but they were very active in the meantime still.

Fantastic pics, Harald! Maybe the best pics of the modern Stones on stage I've seen.

I'm definitely not the right candidate, as I was born 12 years after the gig -- I just wanted to tell you that you asked in the right place and you can expect some replies. Other places where you may find the right people are the Shidoobee and Rocks Off forums.

QuoteDandelionPowderman Quotegotdablouse Quotemuenke Not bad at all, but I really would prefer 100 Years Ago too ... WahWahWahWah ... I used to like that song a lot but I don't think it's aged that well, actually it sounds like several unfinished songs patched together (which I think it is) but I'm all for Wah-Wahs! So how about a great wahwah song...Heartbreaker! Isn't it only Ronnie who doe

It's a cool idea. Not their greatest song, but it could replace All Down the Line and a number of tunes that have been played to death already. Not to be nitpicking, but Silver Train was played once in the UK in '73 and possibly also in Mannheim or something (I don't remember exactly), so at least twice before.

I don't hear much of MT on JJF there, but he sure seems to be there. That song could (or did?) sound interesting with Ronnie doing the high pitched sitarish arpeggios from the studio version, like he always does, and Mick T adding some snarly leads à la 1972.

Great seeing the CYHMK clip. It's pretty wicked that Mick Taylor actually leads the band during the end of the solo/song. I just love that they gave him this opportunity at last. It's pretty fantastic that they're all there performing this after all these years while so many of their peers are gone. The only one missing on stage is Bill Wyman. CYHMK has to be one of the biggest collaborativ

Quotemtaylor Imagine - consert just one song - a two hour Midnight Rambler jam. I kid you not -- I would enjoy that more than their usual concerts. Just to hear something new. And to hear Mick T for two hours. Admittedly, I'd be sick of it by the end.

Based on boots, I would have to go with 1972 for the best, though I love '69 (and '70) as well. Worst probably 2007.

Quotetatters Quoteryanpow this song was a hoot in '78! They only played it maybe 10 times during the entire decade of the 1970s. In '78, if I remember correctly, it was played in the middle of the set, interrupting a long string of songs from Some Girls. It was weird hearing it so out of context like that, instead of being one of the warhorses coming down the home stretch. I made a quick chec

I don't know about the Deluxe Version of the album, but I bought my Live in Texas '78 dvd (stand alone pack) from America on eBay and it is region 1. Tip: You might wanna google your dvd player brand + "unlock region" (or something similar), because I was actually able to disable the region on my Samsung dvd player by dialing a code on the remote (this was back in 2003, though). Now

Interesting to hear the R'n'R Circus version again. It's good - the percussion is impressively close to the original, the piano is fantastic, Jagger is good, Keith is okay, Brian's groovin' and Charlie's cymbal bashing is bloody irritating. My top five is: 1. Studio version 2. Ya-Ya's 3. R'n'R Circus 4. Love You Live 5. Montreal '89 (or was it Toronto, when Keith did that amazing guitar s

Looks like a nice release, but like many of you I'd prefer 1) a lighter package à la Texas '78, and 2) more archive releases and not just the same shows in a dozen formats. Gotta agree a dvd is great.

That Stray Cat Blues version is a glorious display of proto punk! The Ya-Ya's version is a lot more dynamic and refined, but this one's great in it's own way. They actually sounded fantastic when Mick Taylor played lots of rhythm guitar.

I gotta say, though, that I love some Keith and Mick Taylor bass parts too, such as Fingerprint File (the studio version; live it was Ronnie) and some of the basslines on Goats and Exile. Bill says he played the bass on Shine A Light, but I think it might actually be Taylor (who is credited), either way it's one of the best Stones basslines ever, in my opinion.

Great interview, surprisingly interesting. You can really sense that he had some frustrations with the Stones sometimes. Like when he says "on those occasions I'll say, 'Why don't you try it, Keith, if you really know what you want.'" -- it would be a plausible guess that what he really said (or wanted to say) was "Well why don't you play the @#$%& bass then".

Thanks for the link! Sounds pretty darn decent. Very solid effort. James Williamson's guitar playing is definitely up to snatch. If there's anything to criticise, it's the fact that it sounds a little bit too much like Raw Power at times. On the other hand, what else could they do? I like the old school production as well, the mix is almost mono.
