Doxa, I rate Dirty Work far higher than IORR album. Less calculated, more spontaneous - and infact the songs generally ARE more complete - just that most people don't like them, or their production. but glad that you too equate IORR with Voodoo Lounge, (as being largely contrived). My 'take' too. Are exceptions on both ofcourse - Time Waits, F File, The Worst, Out of Tears

Liddas, didn't the open tuning start after beggars? (I can't mind if SFM and JJF are 'open'). Interesting hearing Lantern again - forgotten the acoustic on that. Does anyone else agree that it's Keith on bass on that one? Bit 'fancy' for Bill! Yup, Lantern - and others off Majesties) - shows that most of the sonic ingredients were in place. but it's the folky/blues nuances and dominance on

I think on Beggars they - specifically Keith - learnt restraint. Or re-learnt it. He was very restrained on Aftermath - too much so for my taste - that was quite a clean, neat product. They let go again on BtB and TSMR but compositionally those were weaker. By the time of Beggars he must have been working on his acoustic playing a lot - and I expect listening a lot - taking time to craft and hone

Totally agree PR2000. The gritty, earthy sound - the power, the deeper, darker, stronger essence - it's all there on Majesties - and was not in evidence on Buttons (still essentially 'pop') The only sign of Buttons style pop is on On With The Show. The Acoustic guitar style of 2000 Man would develop into rootsier blues acoustic of Prodiagl Son and Factory Girl (Dear Doctor), Silver, LIV

I've read somewhere - in a Mojo or Face circa November 2003? - that the leaked circulating work of Dylan in Big Pink - later to become The Basement Tapes - was hugely influential on various acts - and they said the influences are apparent in Beggars - stuff like Jigsaw, Salt of the Earth - and that it also influenced the Beatles - White album - can't remeber the other acts. Very plausible read. I

Quoteguitarbastard the production, the cover and jaggers singing...BAAAAAAAD... 3 good songs: one hit, dirty work, sleep tonight. the rest is how skipstone pointed out: the antithesis of the rolling stones. It was the antithesis of what the Stones had become since before Some Girls and soon after it. Lazier and less inspired in the studio. It was everything that they once had been - Ke

There is nothing bad about Winning Ugly. Stunning bass line. Marvellous inventive lead guitar. Jagger's vocals - huge range, power and playful invective - set against a lively, upbeat tempo. Hence the genius - a rollicking diatribe. The Stones were again socially/politically relevant - and challenging themselves/us - the greed culture - in a personal way. (Not in an open and general 'Un

From Urbanstels selection above - presumably that is Rose with him circa '72-73? He looks very happy there. Can't remember - did they marry? Any children? (Infact does MickT have any children?) But I heard that Rose was not too kind to him in the end? Only hearsay - can't remember any details or how or when their relationship ended. At some of MickT's solo gigs these days you can purchase ph

I know you weren't implying that at all. You point was very clear and incisive - i.e. 'they' (Woodites) can't have it both ways.

Nothing to look forward to, then." But true? Only time will tell. But far more likely than Taylor going on tour with them again. And so, although the idea of Taylor returning is far more exciting

Quotestill ill I think it sounds great, more interesting than the live Mr D imho Thanks. This is just a perfect example of how Taylor's lead playing (breaking free towards the end) lifts the whole performance. First off Jagger gets more engaged and into it followed by the rest of the ban and horns ....... the whole thing takes off to a higher level. Not saying that Keith couldn't do this

QuoteNickB Why are we still discussing this? Simple. We are discussing it because the idea of their taking Taylor on tour is more exciting than the prospect of another tour with Ronnie.

Following a somewhat freer existence in a previous user-guise I came firmly back to earth and have been confined within the strictures of this structure, which seriously lacks the Fifth Element to make it Whole and to make it (feel like) Home. It's a Song Title.

Quotewoody.woodpecker Charlie, 1000 miles ahead on Ringo. If you look at solo efforts, Ringo had only 1 hit (something with Photograph in it). Charlie has had no solo hits but he does a lot of his own taste (Big Band, Jazz and now Boogie Woogie) in between Stones activities. WW It Don't Come Easy - No. 1 in UK I think. Back Off Boogaloo (with fab drums) also a big hit. In fact i thin

Of course it's total shite from Woody if he beat up The Ek, but let's not start a whole frickin' campaign on all his bad sides. He's a Rolling motherhonkin' Stone.
