For me it's not a gem, I like it though. It has a nicely romantic atmosphere, quiet acoustic guitar, lovely harmonies between Jagger, Richards and jazzy Watts. It's like sitting outside, in the dark, after having BBQ, staring at the fire... then pick up the guitar and enjoy yourself.

Ballads are fine, but rockers are great. The Stones use a mixture of different styles, but listen to the first 3 seconds of a song and you know exactly: It's a Stones song. That's unique. They square the circle.

Every version of Shattered is powerful, aggressive, loud, cool and fast. Until 1982. Since 1989 they play it too slowly and too well-behaved. So, to me it's one of just a few tracks that doesn't work in these days anymore.
