Let's look at this "special guest" thread from another angle. Suppose the remaining members of Led Zeppelin decided to get back together for a reunion tour, and they decided to be "current" like Mick Jagger has done and add a special guest to sing one of their songs- ala Taylor Swift to sing a duet with Robert Plant on "Going to California." As ludicrous as this may

Quotekleermaker Returning to Taylor's solo one more time I must say that this one in Toronto wasn't that coherent. Or maybe even not coherent at all. Taylor could play it safe by starting with the well known notes from the studio album and then carry on the solo, but he chose another way and in hindsight not such a good way. But playing it safely isn't Taylor's game. It's not in his musical DNA.

QuoteJames Kirk My statement was not meant as a put down of Talor Swift or Katy Perry, Carrie Underwood etc, they are all good at what they do and their certainly is a place for it in todays market. Not everyone can be of the same status of the Stones or Dylan + The Beatles. That said I am putting down the Rolling Stones. What is the motivation for this? Does Mick Jagger really want to sing wi

I went to Toronto to see the Stones for two reasons: one was certainly because of Mick Taylor (although I was disappointed that he only played on Rambler and came back out for an encore of strumming, noodling on Satisfaction). I had high hopes, especially as this was on the heels of performances of Sway & Can't You Hear Me Knocking on the west coast. The other reason was to take my son to see

Quotebigmac7895 Always have enjoyed Mathijs' knowledge and posts, but man you missed the boat on this version if you are complaining (maybe using sarcasm?). I love that Taylor doesn't copy a scripted approach and allows for feeling in the song. If I want note for note scripting-I'll go see an Eagles show. Awesome If you go back and listen to various live recording from the 72 tour, with som

Why is he just noodling his way through some bring jazz fusion finger practising runs? Mathijs I agree that this is quite different from the album version, but still I liked it very much, I wasn't th

Quoterockdoc8885 Ya Ya's - GREATEST LIVE ALBUM EVER RELEASED BY ANYONE! Okay, I'm a bit biased toward the Stones and there have been several outstanding live releases from other artists. If the Stones had ever officially released on record/cd either the Philly show in 1972 or the Brussels show the following year we might have a strong debate here. As it stands, despite the release on MP3 o

I've watched different videos on U TUBE of Mick Taylor's performance on Can't You Hear Me Knocking from the west coast. He just brings added color and life to that tune on the concert stage that you can clearly see from videos how the Stones and the audience are into it and demonstrate their appreciation so favorably...Come on Rolling Stones, time is wasting...

Quoteflashhh I think the RO performance was crap. Jaggers voice is old and he cant do justice to such a great song. Frankly, it baffles me that so many people think they sound so good, especially people who, like me, have seen them many times going back to the early 70s. Will no one admit that KR and RW simply dont play as well as they used to? That Jagger looks silly and sounds even worse? Wha

Quotefleabitmonkey Quotebv Mick Taylor is a big smile. He just love being on stage. This is no competition. He is a guest player. He will be on for "Sway", "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" and the regulars "Rambler" and "Satisfaction". We just need to cross our fingers for more "Sway" and "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" at the shows. But there

QuoteBlackdog I was at the show in Toronto. I was hoping Mick Taylor would appear for a few more songs. The concert was good in my opinion but not great. I went and got a beer during IORR. Carrie Underwood can sing but I don't understand why they need all of these guests. I am going only to see Mick Taylor. I have Chicago (31st), Toronto (6th) and both Philadelphia concerts. Quoteohotos Quotebleedingman Curious about Taylor sitting down for the finale. Playing it cool or is there another reason? Not like it was "Sweet Virginia" or some such. Even during MR, while I liked his playing, he looked really awkward and out of his place. Maybe he didn't feel well last night? That's pretty much the way I felt last night watching Mick Taylor play. To me, he did

I just got back from Toronto. My 12 year old son had a great time. I can see that he will be talking about this and bragging to his friends that his pop took him to see the Stones. From my son's perspective and many others who probably saw the Stones for the first time last night, I am quite sure they walked out thinking this was probably one of the best shows they have seen. As a long time fan w

Quotemgshorr I was right next to the stage when Dave Grohl soloed on Bitch. My left ear has been ringing since then. (3rd day today) Figure about 90% of you will joke me, but seriously, how long could this last? The ringing is not noticeable in a normal setting of conversation etc...but very noticeable in a quiet room and when trying to sleep. History = No prior ear damage/ringing etc..

I have been checking ticket prices on many sites lately and finally snagged two tickets in the $160.00 range for nosebleed seats (section 309) for Saturday's Toronto show. My 12 year old son and I are excited, especially me after seeing that they showcased Can't You Hear Me Knocking with Mick Taylor the other night. I was having my doubts there for awhile, but I believe that the feedback from fan

QuoteSilver Dagger I share Doxa's view. It's great that they played it and I'm sure if I would have been there I would have been suitably propelled by it but it just sounds weak compared to the studio version. Some songs gain power when they are played lived and take on a life of their own - Midnight Rambler is one such beast that has been on occasion as great live as it is in the studio. But th

As much as I and others on this board have tried to get the Stones attention, I suspect that the Stones (in particular Mick Jagger) are going to keep things the way they are. They are creatures of habit. From all indications, Mick Jagger does not like to screw with the setlist once its established. Judging from past tours, the Stones typically craft a set list and toss songs that don't fit after

QuoteDandelionPowderman Quotemarianna Mick Jagger didn't seem to have a problem with Mick Taylor. Didn't someone here pull a quote from some years ago where he said Mick J. called Taylor's playing exciting and said he missed having a real lead guitar player in the band? Why is Keith Richards vision for the band more valid than Mick Jagger? Mick J. is a pretty good musician in his own right, inclu

That Katy sure has been generating a lot of press since her big night with Mick and the boys. The story has been picked up by several news publications such as USA Today, US Weekly, Rolling Stone, Huffington Post, etc. More good publicity for the Stones.. PS- you behave yourself Charlie Watts!

QuoteCBII After doing a bit of research it seems Katy Perry has 53 MILLION fans on Facebook. From a filling up the seats standpoint, the move is a stroke of pure genius. She will attract some of the really teeny bopper crowd and their parents. A very smart business move, hats off to whomever thought this up. You have to hand it to Mick Jagger. He is an astute, shrewd business man who will do wh

I met Mick Taylor (of all places) in my hometown of Rochester, NY in the mid or later 1980's at the legendary House of Guitars (which is three minutes from my house). An acquaintance of mine who works in the music business brought Taylor to the House to sign autographs (this was advertised by the House of Guitars but Mick allegedly had no knowledge that he was brought there to sign autographs). QuoteLoudei I have to say that from watching all videos possible online since december (yeah I havent been to any shows) Keith's focus onstage has been the difference and as a result they are playing better as a band. Probably better than 89'. Keith's new approach of just standing in front of Charlie and leaving the whole stage for Jagger has been glorious. Also the addition of Mick Taylor seems

I've only listened to and seen the videos of the current so far, and although music is subjective and in the eye of the beholder, I don't think the playing level is equal to 1989. Many folks have argued that the Steel Wheels tour was "the beginning of the end" with the back-ups and over production, etc, but I think overall, the musicianship of the core personnel (Mick, Keith, Ronnie, Bi

The schmucks offered them an amount that is really hard to cover. AEG took this on as bragging rights and can probably be written off on their taxes as a loss. I'd have to think the band WOULD care, especially Jagger. If this is indeed the last tour, n
