This is the pick I was referring to before...
It was given to me by my buddy from art school, who had staggered my imagination after we both ended up in NYC in the Eighties...
First he became assistant to a well-known photographer who was selected to shoot the Stones...
Then my friend called me one day to tell me that the Stones are in your neighborhood (East Village) shooting a video and get over here NOW!
I feel like the boy who cried wolf here... cause half the time here I'm kidding around (like the fake Brian Jones pick or the fake MT action figure)...
but as you must realize, the other half of the time, I am not kidding around (Attic thread, e.g.).
The pick is quite ordinary looking. Its edge feels surprising rough and it is much thinner than I expect Keith would have been using.
I should have posted a scan of this a while ago... with all those other pictures.

There's an ton of Rolling Stones guitar picks on Ebay, etc. Some have the logo with and without years. Some say A Bigger Bang and the reverse on some have band member names, even saw one with Charlie Watts name imprinted.
Does anyone know if the band had a bunch of configurations made for cheap handouts along with stage use or are there a lot in circualtion that are just fan made creations from someone with access to a manufacturer?
Just curious if anyone out there has a guide to their tour picks from the past couple tours?

I answered a similar question on Shidoobee and also here on IORR (but I couldn't find that thread). Here is what I said on Shidoobeee...

I have a pick Keith gave me at the rescheduled Atlantic City show on 17 November 2006 - but it has the original date of the show on it (27 October 2006). It's definitely special to me, but does the wrong date make it more "special" from a collector's point of view? Just curious.

Beast, the value of the pick depends on the exclusivity / importance of the show, the popularity of the city etc.... One of NYC is always going to fetch more than one for Atlanta for example.

schillid, The same place I get everything else. Yes, I get much stuff in person (I went to 34 shows on Bigger Bang and also have some good friends). I then trade for the stuff I don't have. It is one hell of a lot of work but I just love collecting, it's a disease or at least an addiction. My favourite collecting genres can be summerised by stuff that was never for sale. i.e. Promo & concert posters, press kits, passes, promo LP's and CD's, promo items, autographs etc...

Some genuine dated ones have turned up on eBay but relatively rarely. Let's just say it isn't my preferred source. I haven't had to buy picks on eBay but I do buy other stuff. I will buy good stuff from anywhere, you just have to know what is good and what is bad!

$20 sounds too cheap for real ones (If they are real I will buy them all!). There are many commemerative ones that feature a wide range of artwork. None of these are real.
The text on the fake ones isn't exactly the same. Look at the text on the ones on the brown card above. On the fake personality ones the text is slightly different.
Typically generic ones are $40+ each and date ones $80+ (up to $300 odd for the really rare ones). Rockaway records in LA (silverlake) have a good selection of real picks including many Stones ones.

Strings are actually really hard to get hold of as you have to be on the inside (i.e. they never throw them to the crowd!). Keith's strings do actually come in custom packets which are cool!
Drum skins are even harder as when Charlie approves a head he tends to play it until it breaks which can be a long time! Charlie has used the same kit since 1972 (for the Stones). Charlie's Cymbals are also killer rare, he only changes them when they split which can take decades!
Below you can see a Charlie drum skin (used on VL along with some other VL stuff) and Charlie cymbal.

The only used strings I have is a complete set of Buddy Guy's. I was in a room where his tech was changing his strings on his polkadotted strat. He kindly wrapped up all 6 strings like they were new and put them in the trash. That was the only time I ever went through a trash can to get something signifigant. Now, if I would ever try to sell them, good luck convincing someone. They will end up in a shadow box dislay with other Buddy memoribilia of mine.
I have one of his polkadotted guitar straps and he signed that for me and gave me some of his guitar picks. He has a lot of different ones. One said "As Seen on Ebay" and Buddy's signature on the flip side.
An odd situation came up a few years back when he was to be picked up at a local hotel for his show and I was asked to ride shotgun. Kind of quiet, but very kind.

I am still looking for: Missoula [Montana] Oct 4 06 but as best I can tell, they never made one for that show though they did for other small cities/shows such as Nampa, Idaho and Regina. Pisses me off. Maybe I will make my own, lol.

I have a pick from KR (on first-hand authority) from the tour bus that was parked next to St. Marks Bar & Grill when they shot WOAF video. Given to me by someone who had been on the bus with the Stones.
The pick is kinda odd... it's RED with and embossed number "1" in a circle in the center. No other logos or writing. It is thinner than I expected KR to use. And the edge felt rough not smooth...
I'll look for it & post a scan later...

Tim, I don't disagree with you, I just think sometimes some sellers aren't clear enough. "Promo" in my language means produced by the band or record company for promotional use (not by an enterprising eBay seller). "Commemorative" is probably a more accurate description although potentially still misleading. They usually never state that they are "unofficial" commemorative or promo items which I believe does lead to confusion.
As a hard core collector and experienced autograph hunter (I spent upto 3 nights a week on the streets of London in 2000/20001 and collected 100's of Stones autographs) I dread the question, "I bought these autographs on eBay, they came with a COA, what do you think?". I have almost never seen a set that I would judge to be real from a story that started like that (look how consistent the ones in the collection of VL stuff above are).
You have to remember Tim, compared to most people you are an experienced memorabilia buyer and you research what you are buying. I just think that at least 1 fan would log on, be excited to find a "promo" guitar pick and buy it believing it to be real. I know for sure 1 fan that proudly showed me a "promo" one they had bought believing it to be real. That is 1 too many in my opinion. To be fair to many of the sellers, I don't think many of them either know or understand the difference themselves.
You have probably seen the white Keith Richards / Ronnie Wood posters all over eBay every week. Up to about 5 years ago these were always advertised as "original". I once questioned the seller about them and he confirmed "absolutely yes, they are 100% original..... I was there that night and took one down and went straight to kinkos and had them print a whole stack on exactly the same paper". I never managed to make him understand that that wasn't "original".
As long as people are clear, fans can make their own decision as to what they like and what gives them pleasure. Whatever you collect, enjoy it!

for me, they're only special and of interest to me because i got them myself at a show. even more special if one of the bandmembers intended them for me. my keith pics are more valuable to me than my ronnie ones - even the one that caused a fight in austin between ronnie and a security guard who refused to give it to me.

Hey, Matthew...how'd you get the Bal-mer ones? I got one at the show, but havent seen any others floating around. How many extras Balmer's do you have?

This is the pick I was referring to before...
It was given to me by my buddy from art school, who had staggered my imagination after we both ended up in NYC in the Eighties...
First he became assistant to a well-known photographer who was selected to shoot the Stones...
Then my friend called me one day to tell me that the Stones are in your neighborhood (East Village) shooting a video and get over here NOW!
I feel like the boy who cried wolf here... cause half the time here I'm kidding around (like the fake Brian Jones pick or the fake MT action figure)...
but as you must realize, the other half of the time, I am not kidding around (Attic thread, e.g.).
The pick is quite ordinary looking. Its edge feels surprising rough and it is much thinner than I expect Keith would have been using.
I should have posted a scan of this a while ago... with all those other pictures.
