Wanna Hold You with guitar intro or alternate
Posted by: georgelicks ()

I'm looking for the LP version of this song.
Who can post the version with guitar intro or at least an alternate take than the available on the Undercover CD?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Compared the 3.13 LP Version (EMI old vinyl) with the Virgin Remaster 3.50 CD-Version recently and there's not much difference except the latter being a bit longer.

Is there a totally different version (guitar intro???) on that mysterious and rare first EMI CD ? I know it was called the "Musicassette Version" or something...

Need some clarification here...

There is no guitar intro on the EMI japansese CD.
Btw, I don't have the musicassette version of this album.

i have the original cassette from 1983. it contains the "long" version. there is one more verse and one more chorus. same guitar intro. same mix.

i have the original vinyl. it countains the "short" version.

i have the CBS CD - same "long" version as "cassette" version.

unhappilly, i do not have the original EMI CD with the vinyl "short" version

the guitar intro is the same on both versions.

i'd be very interested in hearing an OFFICIAL version without guitar intro - japanese release ??? - not a bootleg ??? - not a fake ???

i reckon we need to ask mrrockandroll to be more specific about the two versions he says he has:
[www.iorr.org]
all i have at this point is the Virgin CD with the longer version,
and of course the Honeymoon Tapes acoustic version, which is something else again.

i wanted to quote "mitch" but i made a mistake and quoted donnywas (sorry for my english).

i want to say that i don't believe in an official version WITHOUT guitar intro.

there is two versions : the short and the long. and that's that.

I have 2 version of Undercover and both with the same version of Wanna Hold You, without guitar intro and with Keith mumbling "mmmmm". I heard about a version with a guitar intro similar to the B2B tour versions.

I would like to hear the Honeymoon Tapes version.

Hi Haristone... We are both on TWIS and IORR as I can see.

You're right, there is only 2 official versions.
The one found on CD and musicassette, and the edited one found on LP and japanese EMI CD only.

people seem to have two different ideas about what this "guitar intro" is/would be -
is it supposed to be *only* guitar, or guitar + drums + humming?

anyway i'm uploading two bootleg versions i have - an early take from France 82:
[download.yousendit.com]
(the 6:57 version that DonnyWas [below] refers to as Take 1)

and the december 1983 acoustic version from the remastered Honeymoon Tapes -

Hello again,

checked back with the collection and found the following:

official releases:
----------------------

1. Wanna Hold You (3.13) - Undercover (EMI 1983) Vinyl
2. Wanna Hold You (3.50) - Undercover (Virgin 1994 Remaster) CD

-> both versions have the same intros and the same ending (and the same mix, as far as I can hear), the difference is, that 2. has a verse added in the middle (!). That means the shorter version has three verses and then chorus repeated until the end, while the longer version has an extra verse (..an offer you can't refuse...etc.) pasted in as verse 2 so to speak.
So, IMHO the difference between the two versions is neither the beginning nor the end rather than a piece (an extra verse) spliced in the middle of the song.

Version 2 seems also to be the "Musicassette Version" released (by mistake?) on early MC's...

ROIO Versions:
---------------

1. Wanna Hold You (Take One) (6.58) - available on "Undercover Outtakes Vol. II" (RR 012 - 1998)
2. Wanna Hold You (Take Two) (3.20) - available on "Undercover Outtakes" (Rogue 02)
3. Wanna Hold You (Acc. Vers.) - "Honeymoon Tapes" (Keith alone on guit/voc.)

Take One is an interesting "raw version" of the song. Everything's already present in the song except for worked out lyrics for the verses. Extensive guitar soloing towards the end from which parts have been used for the track on the LP.

Take Two is already very close to the (short) LP version. It has only the three verses and everything (apart from the mix) sounds similar to the released version.

The accoustic version from The Honeymoon Tapes is something else entirely 'cause it has nothing to do with the released version and is Keith alone rockin' away on acc. guitar....

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After all, one can only guess on what's the reason for these two versions:
Perhaps the longer one was the finished one for Undercover and then too long to fit on the LP (remember them limited running times for LP sides in the old days), so that they had to edit it. BUT for MC and later CD, the longer version fitted well and was therefore used...

BTW, that's only one of MANY small differences within the various Re-Issues of the Stones' back catalogue. More on this to come....

I'll be interested to learn the differences.

I've slowly replacng my CBS discs with the '94 Virgin re-issues.
If I remember correctly...the Virgin SLAVE (Tattoo You) is significantly longer than the CBS version..not sure how it compares to the vinyl releases. I also noticed that RIP THIS JOINT (Exile) is supposedly 10 seconds longer. I haven't listened side by side so I don't know if much changed. Any others?

IORR............but I like it!

Luxury is 30 seconds longer and they included a remix of Sex Drive instead of the original album version but,those should be the only differences since the '60's.There are official mixes of Sway,All Down The Line,Far Away Eyes,Miss You,Shattered,and Beast Of Burden that are different however,they have not been officially released on cd yet.The '93 remasters '71 - '86 have better sound,though.

Well, no problem. Here they are:

Differences Virgin 1994 Remaster series compared to old vinyl (Atlantic/EMI/CBS/Sony) for the period 1971-1991:
--------------------------------------------------------------

Tumbling Dice (3.30) (Vinyl) ---------> (3.45) (Virgin CD)
Just Wanna See His Face (3.15) --------> (2.52)
Torn & Frayed (3.40) ----------------> (4.17)

Can You Hear The Music (5.10)----------->(5.31)

Luxury (4.29) -----------> (5.00)
Fingerprint File (6.41) ------------> (6.33)

Slave (4.58) ------------->(6.34) different Mix

Wanna Hold You (3.13) -------------> (3.50) + 1 verse

Back To Zero (4.12) -------------> (4.00)
Boogie (Key To The Highway)
unabridged --------------> cut (stops in the middle)

Mixed Emotions (4.24) ---------------> (4.40)
Terrifying (4.42) ---------------> (4.57)
Break The Spell (3.06) ---------------> (3.06) on the Virgin Remaster CD
Album Edit while it is longer (3.40) on the original Sony CD (!)

Sex Drive (5.04) ----------------> (4.28) on the Remaster; here the 7"
single edit (different intro) was used by Virgin
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK, these are the ones I remember right now at the moment.
I know that in some cases these are minor differences, so this information is for the people interested in such things... (collectors, afficinados... ;-)

best,
Donnywas

Are the songs where only the timings differ (where you don't write about a different mix) the same but just faded out earlier or later?

Yes, as far as I can tell. As I said, in most cases the differences are rather subtle, that's why comparing track timings is the best way to compare...

In the cases where I noted it (f.ex. Sex Drive), I'm certain that a different mix was used (I know it 'cause I also own the 7", where obviously the single mix is also used...)

In other cases (f.ex. Slave) one wonders, why suddenly there is another mix used and if that decision came from the Stones camp or was done by Bob Ludwig, who produced the Remasters...(???)

greetz,
Don

dear with sssoul,
the album version (I bought undercover 2 months ago) I have is 3.52: this one is without the guitar intro and the mumbling.
However, a few years ago I downloaded a Stones discography via bittorrent, in which I Wanna Hold You is 4.33 and has a guitar intro (like on the B2B dvd). I guess somebody compiled that album for his discography through downloading single songs with kazaa, so he probably will have downloaded an outtake without knowing it.
I've read this entire thread, but now I would really like to know: why does Virgin changes the song's length??? I would say it has no use anymore; those albums 20 - 30 years old!!! so why do they modify them?

Just Wanna See His Face (3.15) --------> (2.52)

so this is longer on vinyl ..????????????????????????

That's an intersting question. Normally, for a Remaster Series to make sense, they would go back and use the original master tapes and do a new Mastering (therefore the name Re-master). The CD encoding technique they use is mentioned on the Virgin CD cases (UV22 Encoding by Apogee Electronics).

Now during this process sometimes old master tapes get confused (or are changed deliberately - that's up to speculation) as is the case with SLAVE. Maybe they thought, the new one (Virgin) was the better version...

Another reason can be, that old master tapes have defects, like scratches and stuff, so if there's an alternative, this gets used...

And last but not least (and this is only my own humble guessing), with such a Remaster Series you don't want to only draw new buyers into the boat, but you also want them old fans to buy the catalogue all over again. How do you achieve this?
By changing a little bit here and there (not too much, because you can't destroy a legacy!) to gain the interest of the old time fans......

Don

I checked back with my original Vinyl "Exile On Main St." and it says 3.15 on the label, whereas the CBS (first re-issue) lists it as 2.51 and the Virgin Remaster Exile has it with 2.54

After a one to one comparison, I realized that although the label on the vinyl says 3.15, it is in reality exactly as long as the others (that is about 2.52).
Strange as this is, it cannot (!) be considered another version.....

what album version are you talking about? is it a CD? what label?
my Virgin CD has a 3:52 version. the intro has guitar, drums and vocals (it's not "mumbling"!) -
is that what you mean?

>> a few years ago I downloaded a Stones discography via bittorrent, in which I Wanna Hold You is 4.33 and has a guitar intro <<

can you upload this one for us, please and thank you? i think i'm not the only one who's intrigued.
