ot: question about streaming music
Posted by: MILKYWAY ()

Hello:

Is there any way in which music that is being streamed over the Web can be "captured" onto a hard drive? You know, like streaming radio. I have come across some great music that I can receive via streaming music, but I would really like to save it for listening whenever I want.

I believe it is possible. I have seen some radio shows posted on here that were captured from a stream.

Thank you,

MW

Yes & no.
Streaming radio, that is, a continuous feed which doesn't start or stop anywhere, you can't.
Feeds that do start & stop at specific points, ie one track or a show with a defined length, are a maybe, depending on how the feed is sent to your computor.

The best bet is to use IE, NOT Firefox, play the track or show all the way through & then see if it's been deposited in your temporary cache which is at- IE>tools>internet options>general>settings>view files. Check if there's an mp3 there, usually with a strange number, if there is copy & paste this into a folder on your HD.

If no mp3 in your cache chances are you have to physically record the sound stream like we used to in the old days. If your computor has a soundcard you can do it on the same computor using an audio editor (a free one is Audacity), or send the audio out to an audio in on another computor. We have to do this with Wolfgangs Vault.

Hope this helps a bit

I use Roxio Creator which has a "capture audio from soundcard" option. This allows me to record in wav or MP3 and then I can edit the recording at will. I've posted some such recordings here.
A free option is [www.screamer-radio.com] which is a free download that allows you to record streaming radio as MP3. It currently has over 4000 radio stations listed [www.screamer-radio.com] but you can add new ones to your favourites.
There's also a helpful forum: [forums.screamer-radio.com]
Hope that helps

Thanks, vox12string & Deltics.

To be specific, I am trying to rip a CD of a concert that streams from the Wolfgang's Vault website.

Thank you, Deltics, for your kind offer. The truth is, the more time I spend on Wolfgang's Vault, the more concerts I am finding.

Thanks again for all of the help.

Replay Media Catcher does pretty much everything, even BBC Iplayer.

It won't do 4OD or ITV though, so Tubedigger is the one to use for that.

I use one of these 3 : Audio Cd-standalone-recorder, my Nakamishi taperecorder, or one of my DVD/HDD recorders with USB - very easy.

When recording streaming music with Audacity, I have at least two options:

either recording with "Stereo Mix" or with "Line-In"

does this make any difference?
Which is better??

You don't want to use "line in" if the source is on your computer. Line in is for connecting external sources.

Even easier when you use Firefox, add a plug-in like downloadhelper or antvideo and choose which format you want to download, mostly it's .mp4.If you want the video, you got it in mp4, if you only want audio mostly it's mp3 winking smiley

I use stereo mix when capturing with Goldwave. I think it's better to capture each channel independently and most wave editors have an option to "average" or match the audio on both channels (if desired).

AVS AUDIO RECORDER works great. just be sure it's not set to microphone and it will record anything that goes through your sound card. click start and stop and save. It's so easy!
