Wanted: The best qualilty Exile outtakes
Posted by: Silver Dagger ()
Date: August 26, 2011 11:49

Since the amazing find of the year that are the Exile instrumentals I want to put together the best quality outtakes / alt versions around.

I think there are now alt versions for all but Tumbling Dice, Casino Boogie, Happy, Turd On The Run, Just Wanna See His Face. Correct me if I'm wrong. Plus all the tracks like Plundered My Soul, I Ain't Signifying etc - there would be about 30 Exile tracks in total.

To complete the alternate Exile I'd be using live versions from as near to 72 as possible.

The outtakes boots I have are I Gave You The Diamonds, and Get A Line On You.

Have any better versions appeared since those boots came out?

If anyone could help that would be great.

If somebody could upload bigtyke66's torrent ( [www.hungercity.org] ) here; that would be a good starter

Yes indeed. Personally, I can't stand the sound for "I Gave You The Diamonds" from Sister Morphine.

It's worth noting that disc 1 of "Hillside Blues" is available in quite better quality on "Trident Mixes" by DAC. Taken from an entirely different tape.....not just "EQ'd".

I have Exile On Main Street Outtakes (SODD 069) in flac files.
I have promised it to our dear friend, collaborator and great uplaoder Jaap sometime ago, so if there's some interest now I can upload it during the weekend, but if it isn't interesting for contributing to this cause I will upload it in the future anyway just for Jaap.

Hi Erik..yes I certainly agree with you about the SM exile release. I was real disapointed in it. Godfather is another label that doesnt do much for the material for me either(although I've been sent many of their releases by someone "connected" but I won't turn down a free cd!! haha)

Amused/Erik,

These are the best quality versions I've heard. There's more bottom and the whole damn thing sounds less compressed. Thanks again.

Glad you like the set. I did a lot of listening and a bit of tweaking to put it together, but I think it turned out OK.

So here's my alternative Exile compilation as it stands now.

I've gone for the best known studio alt takes, kindly provided by Amused and called Best Of Exile Sessions.

For Casino Boogie, Turd On The Run, I Just Wanna See His Face, and Stop Breaking Down I was forced to use the album version as I don't know of any alt studio or live versions.

I'd be happy to hear of suggestions where perhaps there is a better song version available than the ones I have used.

I then added all the outtakes from the official Exile reissue last year, other unreleased songs recorded at this time and the recently found Exile instrumentals.

There's a mighty 33 songs in total and 2.2 hours of music. Now where's that beer and my guitar?

Rocks Off [pre vocal take] 4:33 Exile Instrumentals

Rip This Joint [early take] 2:32 Exile Instrumentals

Just wondered why you dont use the alternate "Stop Breaking Down" from Wingless Angels. I was thinking it was on most Exile outs collections

It's on the set I uploaded to HC, but from a different and better source than Wingless Angels.

A huge thank you to SD for doing this (and others for providing flacs).

But why not use the actual Exile OTs like "Dancing in the Light" rather than the official versions with extra modern instrumentation and 40-years-after-the-fact vocals from Jagger?

Or include both, perhaps?

I wonder if it's this outfake, they've kept the pitch constant whilst slowing it down.

Also on something called 'All Down The Line' with the snare eq'd out, don't know where I got that from though

Sorry - my mistake. It's the official album version. I just copied and pasted the track listing from my itUnes and forgot to omit my classification as "rock".

There is a CD boot called "All Down The Line" that says it has an alt Turd (time: 2:53). Claims to be an outtake from LA. Can't upload the back of the CD for some reason...

Thanks to all on this thread. Exile is my favorite record by any band. I was really disappointed with the 'official' outtakes, as so much of it sounds re-recorded (other than Taylor's solo, which does sound like it would have IMHO in 1972).

Thanks!
