Thanks a lot for sharing all your work - Paris is a real ear opener!

Cheers.

So have you put any thought into trying your remastering on any studio outtakes?

Munichland Melodies would be a great start.

Any decent results for the Ft. Worth 72 full audience tapes?

I've done several collections of studio tracks in the past. But up until recently, the tracks I've altered or "remastered" have been for my own personal consumption only and not for sharing purposes. I don't know how I feel about distributing altered studio tracks. It's almost like you're messing with the artist's presentation too much and polluting the bootleg pool with music that shouldn't rightfully be associated with the artists who recorded it. Am I being paranoid? Maybe...but just see potential problems with it. Just consider all the stuff that circulates on say, Hendrix (read: Alan Douglass). It's a slippery slope once you start changing unfinished "outtakes".

06 It's All Over Now
07 Happy

12 Dead Flowers

14 Live With Me
15 All Down The Line
16 Rip This Joint

I did this mix last summer, before I got Izotope Ozone 4. I used the original Ozone to compress Mickboy's bone-jarring bass and brightened the sound with some high-end tube saturation.

Sorry, I only saved it in mp3@320.

From Sydney 2/27/73 (Black Strap Jacket)

Added ambiance and dampening between 50Hz-9080Hz. Matched the channel levels, which were uneven on several tracks. Maximized loudness and widened the stereo slightly using (4-band) multiband processor. Also used harmonic excitation between 20-200Hz to give it a little punch and limited the signal at the high-end to contain sibliance (essing), of which some remains.

This was a near-perfect soundboard to begin with. The only complaint I've heard about it (besides missing the last 2 tracks) was that it sounded a little too rough. So the intent was to soften the mix without stripping the edge off. That's why it's mixed as loud as possible without distorting it.

02 Live With Me
03 Dead Flowers
04 Stray Cat Blues
05 Love In Vain
06 Midnight Rambler
07 Bitch
08 Introductions
09 Honkey Tonk Women
10 Satisfaction

notes:

As with Paris, I seperated this mono recording into 4 bands then pushed them apart, rendering uncorrelated right/left channels or "fake stereo", to use the primitive term. I maintained the dynamics (highs and lows) on here using a soft limit on the output. The sound is brighter than the original recording. Reverb was processed to the mid-side frequencies only, adding some space and ambience to the mix.

Mastered with Izotope Ozone 4 and Tape Restore 1.0. Final edits in Goldwave
v5.58.

UPDATE: Just listened to this one entirely with headphones...I adjusted the volume at the end of tracks -- with a hard clip -- to save our ears from the guy whistling directly into the recording device after some of the tunes. No musical portions of the tape were clipped.

14 You Gotta Move (outtake) (2:34)
15 Stop Breaking Down (outtake) (4:40)
16 Get A Line On You (outtake) (4:24)

Notes:

Another mono-SBD and another multiband stereo job to get uncorrelated channels. 4-band Tube saturation was also used to boost the harmonics. TSP mix was pretty balanced, so no EQ was used. The dynamics were slightly manipulated though, but only enough to accentuate the guitars. Charlie's drums were high in the mix, where they belong, so I tried not to mess with the high end of this recording. Reverb was added between 257Hz-5045Hz to give it some depth.

I didn't edit the stereo mix of "Let It Rock" on purpose, so we have TSP's stereo recording with which to compare the rest of the songs (notice how Nicky's piano isn't plinking my mix to death).

Been thinkin, whats next? I was wondering San Diego 17.10.1994 as it a direct "SBD" transfer from VHS tape.So if i just remaster it and post it here, for you to work on...........other good ones to work are 1981 tour mono sbd´s.

Also Hollywood Bowl 2005 should be next on the line,i have allready remastered these,so i can just upload them.

If you burned the waves to CD-R and want to play them back in 5.1, make sure the CD Player has an S/PDIF Toslink digital output which is connected to a DTS receiver (decoder+amplifier). Also, what program did you use to burn the disc?

Marko, there's better ways to spend our time than remastering shows that we don't like! smiling smiley I'll give the uploads a listen. I love the setlist on 2005.06.11. Thanks for the post.

Yes i use and Home Theater and other bootlegs in 5.1 plays normally, but these files are Stereo since i convert from Flac to WAV...

I burned with Nero 7.

I use Winrar -> Flac Frontend -> Nero -> Cd-r -> Home Theater.

You're right, they are stereo. I just played a cd-r version of the files I posted and I think I know what happened: I never adjusted the settings on Easy-CD-DA extractor before converting them to FLAC. It's set to 16-bit stereo by default.

Thanks for pointing this out. I'll take the "5.1" out of the original post :-)

I like pretty much everything you've done with the Perth, but I would have to say the reverb, which helps in general, does make the show sound as if it were performed/recorded indoors.Maninly on the vocals. Maybe pull it back a bit?

(the entire show sounds close to the Brussels tape -- which I think is pretty impressive on your part).

Time for the Sydney shows now? ;-)

I've always been curious what is going on, sonically, on this Perth tape at certain points. It seems at times the levels "pan" back and forth from left/right at several points (e.g. :17 and :23 during Brown Sugar and, of course 5:44 of Midnight Rambler though I suspect that may have been intentional). Tape flaw? Correctable? (if so, I am sure with tremendous/tedious effort). Just curious as to an explanation more than anything. Certainly not a criticism.

Thanks! This is the type of feedback I look for (rather than "it sounds good...better..., etc.) I get carried away sometimes with effects like reverb and because I turn these remasters out so quickly, I don't always hear the flaws. Thanks for pointed this one out, as I'm editing the Hollywood Bowl -- another outdoor venue -- right now and will keep the reverb in check.

No problem, please see my 3rd re-edit of my post with another question.

Also, I hope that Hollywood Bowl ALD is salvageable. I was at that show and rank it among the top Stones performances I've seen.

Sam,

If you have a good quality version of Essen 1970 ripped from the vinyl or true tape source (NOT Ice Cream In the Foyer!! they messed that up!) that might be a good candidate. The best 1970 show/recording IMHO.

I noticed the panning too. It's very obvious when listening with headphones. MT's guitar is panning back-and-forth throughout the show. It was either done intentionally (like you said) or less likely, it's the result of equipment malfunction (MT misses the first 2:50 of Gimme Shelter). If it was intentional, it's a real bonehead thing to do to a stereo recording of this quality. I'm at a loss as to it's origin though.

"Tedious" is one word to describe the corrective effort required to fix it. Maybe someone else is up to the task smiling smiley
