UNRELEASED BBC "OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST" - MONSTER POST BY STRETTON BULL

The Old Grey Whistle Test first went on air in September 1971 and became one of the most influential music shows for a generation. When the Old Grey Whistle Test went on air in 1971 it was unique. In a world accustomed to Top of the Pops, here was a show on which the bands performed album tracks and were interviewed after they had played. This was before the days of miming. The music was live and, since the idea was to air new sounds, many of the bands were making their first television appearance. Presenter Bob Harris recalls how the show's name was inspired by the doormen (in grey suits) who worked at the music publishing houses in London's Denmark Street, known as 'tin pan alley':

"It was a 'tin pan alley' phrase from years ago. When they got the first pressing of a record they would play it to people they called the old greys. The ones they could remember and could whistle having heard it just once or twice had passed the old grey whistle test".

The programme went out on BBC2, last thing on a Friday night, from a tiny studio on the fourth floor of Television centre. In the days before 24 hour television the station would close down at the end of the evening. This gave the last programme of the day some flexibility. If things were going well for the Old Grey Whistle Test they could stay on air. Some shows ended after 25 minutes while particularly good ones sometimes extended to an hour and a half.

They had a budget of £500 per show, which was very low even in those days. In addition to the technical costs the artists themselves had to be paid. David Bowie, for example, played three songs and was paid £50. John Lennon refused to accept his fee in cash, insisting that he should be rewarded instead with chocolate Bath Oliver biscuits!

The titles sequence featured an animation of a man kicking a star. He was to become affectionately known as The Starkicker. The show's title music, with it's distinctive harmonica, was a track called Stone Fox Chase by a Nashville band, Area code 615.

When bands were performing the sound was often so loud that the camera crew could not hear what the director was saying in their headphones.

The programme makers continually broke new ground. The first ever 'simulcast' of radio and television , the first live transatlantic broadcast of a rock concert and the television coverage of Live Aid were all achieved by the Whistle Test team.

Sadly, the programme is no more, having ended it's run in 1987, but it passed the musical baton to it's successors. A succession of programmes such as 'Later with Jools Holland', 'The Tube' and 'The White Room' have all drawn inspiration from Whispering Bob Harris's Old Grey Whistle Test.

Please note:

1) The version of "Psycho Killer" here is not the OGWT studio one from 1978-01-31 on the official OGWT Volume 1 dvd. This comes from the 3Sat "RockPop" show (Rockpalast) of 1980-12-20, a couple of tracks from which were included in the OGWT of 1981-01-31.

2) "King Kong" on "Colour Me Pop" was originally about 23 minutes long. An 11 minute version (starting at about the 1:40 mark) was shown on the OGWT 1971-11-16 Zappa special. This version is the first 9 minutes and comes from the BBC Late Show tribute to Zappa 1993-12-17 broadcast following his death. There's a little tape wear on the final minute.

3) "Sin City" and "Run Run Run" come from "Rock Around The Clock" - an all night music special presented by the Whistle Test team on 1986-09-20.

4) Tracks 19, 21 and 29 are sourced from mpeg1 clips. NB they have NOT been recoded to mpeg2 nor their resolutions altered.

5) The artists featured on the menu pages are silent images, except for those where the songs featured have been named, dated and timed. All official clips are less than 30 seconds in length.

6) Eric Idle's parody of Bob Harris, which concludes the first menu page video comes from a sketch called "The Old Gay Whistle Test" from Idle's 1975-76 BBC Series "Rutland Weekend Television". I don't think this series was ever officially issued on video, although an LP was released featuring a sketch of the same name. I have been unable to establish whether the sketch featured on the LP is the same performance included here. The clip included here is 22.72 seconds in length, so should be permissible under Dimeadozen criteria even if it had been released.

Again, thank you seems insufficient. I have a nero burning question.
A regular 700mb cdr is to small to burn these files on. And nero won´t
accept a dvd. What do you think? Thanks again.

Why won't Nero accept a DVD?

Unfortunately I couldn't make them fit on a CD without losing too much quality, due to the running time of them.

I select super video option. Aftering encoding nero spits out the DVD
and says I need a cdr. On selecting make DVD, nero won´t add AVI files.

If you're trying to re-author it into a DVD format with VOB files, then you would need to do this first before trying to burn into DVD format in Nero.

If I was doing that I would use DVD Flick [www.dvdflick.net] or VSO ConvertX to DVD [www.vso-software.fr] to convert it.

Alternatively you should be able to burn the DivX files directly to a DVD-R disc but select the DVD-Rom (ISO) option. Note that these will play on a computer but your home DVD player will have to support DivX files for them to work.

Hi Soul - you'll have to disable your anti virus. There's nothing wrong with the file. I've just downloaded it and run a scan.

Anyone else get an audio/video sync issue on Volume 5?

It happens a few songs in, definitely by the end of the Graham Nash song. Lasts throughout the rest of the material.

Is there an audio/video sync problem on Volume 5?
Seems to go out by the end of Graham Nash and remains throughout.
