The Flying Clouds Of Detroit - Peace In The Valley [1946] (Original)

Thomas A. Dorsey became known as "the father of gospel music," after having written more than 400 gospels. However, he had a much more secular start in the music business (for example, he recorded "Tight Like That" with Tampa Red in 1928!). Some sources credit him with inventing the term "gospel music." Dorsey wrote Peace in the Valley in 1937, basing it on the earlier spiritual, "We Shall Walk Through The Valley In Peace," with Mahalia Jackson in mind. However, Jackson did not record the number and, indeed, it remained unrecorded until May 1946 when the Flying Clouds Of Detroit picked it up and recorded it as part of their only recording session for Haven. Their original was released the following year on Haven 510. Tiny Powell's Paramount Singers recorded it in 1949, but it was not until 1951 and Red Foley's million-selling version that the song became widely popular. Elvis's version of "Peace In The Valley," owes more to Red Foley's 1951 version.

If she feels the same way about him, he tells her to knock three times on the ceiling, probably with a broom handle, and he will hear the message. If she's not interested, she should knock twice on the heating(?) pipe as in the picture, and the pipe will conduct the message up to him.
It would have been easier to tell her to knock twice on the ceiling if she wasn't interested, but it would have made the song less pleasing.:

twice on the pipe if the answer is no

becomes

knock only twice if the answer is no

If English is not his native language or if he's too young to remember NY tenements, I can understand his needing an explanation.
A comment in the Songfacts link above says that even in the 70's outside pipes were rare.
I'd better pipe down now.
