The clips from the 1964 New York World's Fair, which I attended, and where, as one of my earliest childhood memories, I was given a glimpse into a "World of Tomorrow" that has yet to materialize, got me thinking about this one. Last time I heard it on the radio, the jock remarked on "what an optimistic song" it was, completely missing the point that it's written from the point of view of someone growing up in the late 1950s, and that the "optimism" is meant to be ironic.

Not a cover version. This is actually the guy. He wrote it for the Beach Boys, but they never recorded it. Here, he plays his million-selling single at a small wedding reception.
