Anyway You Look At It
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

Ocean Way Recording Studios, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, US,
March 13 - July 1997

Mick Jagger - lead vocals
Keith Richards - acoustic guitar, harmony vocals
Charlie Watts - drums
Ron Wood - acoustic guitar
Darryl Jones - acoustic bass
Lili Haydn - violin

Anyway you look at it, from any point of view
You must admit I'm lucky to be in love with you

And people say I'm cynical, they never want the truth
But life will have more twists and turns, then found in any book

And I may travel far away, across the seas of doom
To undiscovered countries, but I'll come back to you

Anyway you look at it, any point of view

Ooh babe, babe, anyway

Anyway you look at it, when the camera shoots
Seen from any angle, I'm still in love with you

Anyway you look at it, anyway you will
Like a beacon shining out, I'll be there for you

Produced by Don Was & The Glimmer Twins

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Saint Of Me / Anyway You Look At It” 7” single
(Virgin Records VSY 1667) UK, January 26, 1998

I love it! Great feel, beautiful guitars and Keith's vocals in the bridge are great. Jagger sounds a bit uninterested though.

So far the worst song which Jagger (and eventually) Richards made EVER!!! Still couldn't believe how they could did this ugly, stupid, horrible, idiotic, pathetic song. This tune couldn't compare with any other Stones song. Pure misery.

Not the worst of theirs, but to be honest just plain boring. Sounds like the father of Streets of Love.

Sorry, but I like it although I agree it doesn't fit in with the Stones canon/ethos very easily. I assume it is in reality a Keith composition given its overt sentiment, but I think Mick voices the lyrics beautifully.

Sounds more like "This Place Is Empty" to me.

"No Anchovies, Please"

Great track. To me, it was one a level of mature writing that I've never seen from them. Music wise---it's heartbreaking. The gentle guitar and that soft violin...it was a direction I wish they treaded more often.

So obviously a Keith song--that Mick sang on. Because of that--it's a little bit more interesting. Had Keith kept it and sang it--would've been just one of tons of Keith "after-hours" songs.

anyway you look at it, its a terrific Ballad. I like the line "Life it has more twists and turns than found in any book".

I like it too...Yes i do...
Just is a little different...very cool slow track.
I do think it would have been a bit better if Keith sung it all..

Lovely gentle song, didn't realise it provoked such strong emotions in those who listen to it!

I love it - not really sure why it gets all those insults heaped on it except that it's gentle and uncynical and not at all a typical Stones song, but I'd rather have this than some of the "Stones-by-numbers" rockers.

Haven't heard it in years. May have to dig it out tonight!

I wish the Stones would do more proper b-sides and not just remixes etc. I always feel kind of cheated.

Line-up-question:

Isn't there a violin/synth sounding like a violin in it as well?

Cello, isn't it?

Inspired by this thread I gave it another listening. As a song, or as a catch for a song it is not so bad; the guitar/cello theme is beautiful, but it is just basic melody line of vocals which makes it so boooooooooooriiiing. And Jagger's whisper voice is - frankly - corny. Jagger is absolutely lost - he just do not seem to have any interpretive skills or heart into it. He should have let Keith to sing it; he knows what to do with sketches like this - then it would be just another Keith ballad - as it should be.

I think it over-all sounds like that they had a nice idea, but that they quickly lost interest, and didn't have energy to really make it work, to lead it somewhere. I'm surprised the control freak Jagger let it released.

But it is a perfect B-side number. A sort of Monty Python number - "something totally different"...

But just my two cents.

It's a beautiful song, with some beautiful harmonies, but the vocals drags it down. They should have spent more time developing the melody. Could have been an acoustic "Heaven", but ends up (almost) like Always Suffering. Promising, but unfinished. Same goes for a lot of the songs on B2B, imo.

Also think it's a cello, but who plays it?

One of the few Stones songs that I find absolutely unlistenable. Find it hard to fathom that of all the songs left off BTB, this was the one they chose to release.

Just as well they went back into the studio again in 2002 and 2004 as had they broken up prior to that, this would have been the last studio song released in their career.

Not exactly a high point to end on.

I don't know why this one garners such negative reviews either,

I have always loved this track, just something beautiful about it. The musicianship is wonderfull, the lyrics, the sound, the mood - just love it.

.

Is that the case? Was it a BTB reject, or purposfully recorded as a b-side? Is there even such a thing?

I have often wondered about a bands approach to the flip-side of a single.
