Already Over Me
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

Ocean Way Recording Studios, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, US,
March 13 - July 1997

Mick Jagger - lead vocals, backing vocals, acoustic guitar
Keith Richards - electric guitar, backing vocals
Charlie Watts - drums
Ron Wood - dobro guitar, baritone guitar
Don Was - bass
Blondie Chaplin - piano, backing vocals
Benmont Tench - Hammond C-3 organ, keyboards
Jim Keltner - percussion
Kenny Aronoff - bucket
Bernard Fowler - backing vocals

As you poured out the drinks for me, felt your hooks sink right into me
And I knew you were my destiny, and I thought you'd get the best of me

On the way down to Mexico, as I danced in your rodeo
You say poverty is picturesque, as you dragged your nails across my chest

You're so cold, you're so cruel, I'm your man, not your fool
Are you already over me, are you already over me
Are you already over me, what a fool I've been

In the first flush of ecstasy, as you lay naked next to me
While our love put the dawn to flight, I just ignore all those warning lights

'Cause when you laugh, I just cry, when you left, I just died
Are you already over me, are you already over me
Are you already sick of me, what a fool I've been, what a fool I’ve been

Hard to hold on to a love divine, oh yeah
I'm kneeling in a corner, praying to your shrine, oh yeah, well

And I'm so hurt, so confused, I've been burned and I’ve been bruised

Are you already over me, are you already over me, are you already sick of me
Are you already over me, are you, are you, already over me
Are you already tired of me, are you already over me
What a fool I've been, what a fool I've been
What a fool I've been, what a fool I’ve been

Produced by Don Was & The Glimmer Twins

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Bridges To Babylon” CD
(Virgin Records VJCP 25333) Japan, September 26, 1997

Great! I love BB, the whole album.

BTB is a goofy album. Has some great songs and some odd ones. Already Over Me, although not one of their best ballads, is pretty damn good.

One of my favourite country ballads...and yes, from an altogether better album than many folks appreciate it to be.

I have a weak spot for it. Although it's a merely standard latter day Mick ballad, I think it's delivered convincingly, including some nice guitar sounds. Sadly, different than Streets Of Love which proved to be a highlight of the ABB tour, it's not as convincing live, at least not on that boot of the same name from Portland '98. Nice studio version, though.

One of those songs that create a mood and paint a picture.

The line "You say 'Poverty is picturesque' as you drag your nails across my chest" is, to me, worthy of a place in a Pulitzer or Booker winning novel. It reveals a lot about the lover, the singer, with a nod to artists, especially painters and photographers, who have found inspiration in slums.

not embarrassing, but it's about 3 or 4 minutes too long.

I also have a soft spot for most of their ballads (like this one). The live version I got as well. I forgot where it was from. Was it done live twice? One at MSG I think? MEZ

A terrible dirge of a ballad on an otherwise, enjoyable album.

doesn't quite cut it....instrumentally it's not too awful, but jagger's over-enunciated vocal is just short of unlistenable.

It's not bad, and the track is pretty cool. A bit forced (the chorus especially). I quite like B2B, but AOM and 'Always Suffering' are perhaps my least favorite tracks. I'd have preferred 'Anyway You Look At It'...Nice guitars, etc, but agree w/ T&A Mick sounds affected...

Agree with T&A as well - it's a way of singing which makes it impossible to listen to; just he did on "Laugh I Nearly Died" or "Barnd New Set of Rules". Jagger can do so much better than that.

there should be a brand new set of rules for mick before entering the studio to record vocals:

1) Drink a couple of pints of ale
2) Drink a fifth of whisky
3) take a piss break, as needed
4) roll tape

Ohh man when Charlie drops in with that bass drum and then snare.....can't help but gasp. Then Ronnie drips in a little steel guitar then "On the way down to Mexicooo...."

One of their best ballads. They haven't written anything more mature or classy than this song since.

You might be on to something there.....which makes me wonder; when was the last time Jagger had a whisky?

Some of these so-so ballads really strike me as Mick's more personal lyrics - he has a hard time with 'sincerity', and not having a 'natural' way of expressing himself on these songs over-enunciates...He's always been more comfortable with blurring personae, irony, ambiguity, lust, anger.

I think thats actually a really good idea. He should try that, the results might be really interesting. It makes me think of the Worried About You video where he has a bottle of JD

I liked this song from the first time I heard it.

Not to self-shill, but this Modern-Jagger voice is the cue I took for the Powergoats song "Angeline". David worte the lyrics to that one, so what the hell, sing it like Jagger.

This blows away Streets Of Love.

There you go. Hell, Always Suffering blows away SOL.

Even Angie does.

That's true. Good point!!

I like it.

...great ballad though NOT Jagger at his best.

So many songs on recent albums like this. SOL has already been compared but there's also...

Already Over Me
Out of Tears
Sweathearts Together
Baby Break it Down
Blinded by Love
Stealing My Heart
Always Suffering
Let Me Down Slow
Streets of Love

They're all (well, mostly) good or even great songs. However, should they be putting more than one from this formula on each album? I suppose you could make the same argument about the Keith open G riff formula, but there you go...

I guess the biggest surprise about this track is that it wasn't issued as a single. I thought for sure it would be.

They didn't issue this but they released SOL? I think they just made the biggest mistake of their lives....ha ha

i listened to this song when i was horribly lovesick. although it's ten years ago and i'm over it it still brings tears to my eyes...and after 30 seconds i have to skip, it just still brings back all those memories....
