The Definitive Rolling Stones Blues Collection
Posted by: Doxa ()
Date: September 14, 2008 21:19

Hello my fellow IORReans,

I'll be 40 y.o. by the end of this month and I will celebrate the occasion at one blues bar...smileys with beer. For that occasion I am planning to do a "Definitive Rolling Stones Blues Collection", and I wouldn't mind any help in creating the damn thing. So far I have sketched the above list. It tries to be in chronological order (including all the officially released recordings). I have some problems here and there. Mostly with defining the cut as a blues number or not. Problem cases are like "Mona", "Down Home Girl" and "Midnight Rambler". I have included those (but only the studio version of MR), but not f.e. "Not Fade Away", "Suzie Q" or "Stray Cat Blues". Any help in terms of definitions, opinions, suggestions, corrections is very much appreciated!

'Dia dhuit' (Hello) Doxa,

Your list is mighty fine, what a wonderful collection of Blues gems the stones have recorded.

I think you may be missing one - perhaps the most contorversial song the stones have ever recorded, Mick's "C*cksucker Blues"!

Great list!

I'd add High and Dry. While a bit country, it's still the blues...similar to Prodigal Son.

I've often thought about making a Stones blues comp but have never got around to it. You have inspired me Doxa! I never thought of 'Hide Your Love' as a blues but maybe...
The biggest ommission for me is the awesome 'Still A Fool' (& 'Cops & Robbers' as already noted). Seems a shame to limit yourself to official releases only and possibly miss out on their finest blues moment!

Excellent work but I miss champagne & reefer

I got the blues, it's soul music.
So young it's a rocker.

Couldn't agree more with you Rockman, from Charlie asking Mick if he can play it until the very end it's a sheer delight! The Stones at their best.
I would also add "Who Do You Love" with Bo Diddley from the Voodoo Lounge DVD

"As we say in England, it can get a bit trainspottery"

Last two songs posted are excellent suggestions!

Doxa, I think this is a fabulous way to celebrate your birthday. A noble project!
Your list looked really comprehensive but somehow I feel a Muddy or Willie Dixon tune is missing...I could be losing my mind though

Doctor Dear!
I consider Down Home Girl blues
and Congradulations

I've included these on Stones blues cd's I've made up

Down Home Girl is on his list, & Congratulations certainly isn't blues...

I'd include Goin' Home (far more suitable than Flight 505), I'm also not sure why you don't want to include Stray Cat Blues.

Also Sister Morphine!

Reelin' & Rockin' is unreleased, & (I think) he only wants released stuff.

Thank you, people! I was sure you will not let me down...

There are fine suggestions here. Of the most obvious is, of course, "Champagne and Reefer" from SAL- things too close or obvious seem to be neglected!

I have tried to keep in official relaeses, and even stricter, in audio ones (so Rockman's great suggestion of "I Can't Be Satisfied" will not 'make' it). It is true that their most perfect blues moments might be unofficial - f.e. wonderful "Still A Fool" from Beggars sessions, so it is hard to be hard here...Also the BBC sessions provide great material, but they are not (yet) officially released? But with "Cvcksucker Blues" I think I need to do an expection - and in fact, I remember it was released officially once in some part of the world, at least for a while, in Germany perhaps?

Now the difficulties considering the blues category. I wanted to hear the blues in "Flight 505", perhaps due to nice boogie-woogie piano start of Stu, but perhaps I imagine too much. I also thought about the rootsy "High&Dry" but I thought the country influence was too big - but like said, the difference to "Prodigal Son" is not that huge. I also thhought of "Goin' Home" due its wonderful blues jam, but I think the actual song is not really a blues, but more like a pop song... I need to give a second listen (a good excuse to listen once again the songs!).. Perhaps "Hurricane" is more like a folk song than a blues tune, so there is a border case, too.

Some other difficult cases are "Stray Cat Blues", "Some Girls", Tie You Up" and "Break The Spell". They have the blues core, but on the other hand, they are so Stones-type songs (but that goes for "Ventilator Blues" as well). I'd like to include SG and TYU because there are not many numbers from those years.

Surely controversial is my choice to include Bo Diddley's "Mona" but exclude all Chuck Berry stuff (expect "Talkin Bout You" of which the Stones did a wonderful blues reading). So the vague borderline comes somewhere between them, I also left many soul or r&b - in the modern sense - type songs of their early catalogue off (like "You Can make It IF You Try", "If You need Me", "Pain In my Heart"). Keith would say it's "all the same sh.t", but sorry master, I need to disagree now tongue sticking out smiley...

But then: I am caught; after all these years I found out that I have never heard "Wish I'd Never Met You"! Thanks Rockman for noting that out. No matter if it is a blues not, I need to find that somewhere.

I will make the corrections or (to be more precise) changes to my original post.

Please keep 'em coming!

- Doxa

Probably the same. It was a STRIPPED outtake; only official release was on the HOPE FLOATS soundtrack afaik.

Thanks guys. Yes, I checked it. They released the soundtrack in 1998 (so, to be consistent I put it after "Mighty As Well Get Juiced", which, on the other hand, feels stupid...)

Stonefrk's suggestions keep me going... "No Use In Crying" surely has a blues feeling - as much as "I Got The Blues", but "All About You" gives me more like an impression of a Las Vegas night club, a Dean Martin lookalike with a drink in his hand... Hmm...
