All Sold Out
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

RCA Studios, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, US, August 3 - 11, 1966 and
Pye Studios & Olympic Sound Studios, London, UK, November 8 - 26, 1966

Mick Jagger - lead vocals, backing vocals
Keith Richards - electric guitar, backing vocals
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Brian Jones - Hammond organ, recorder
Jack Nitzsche - piano

Why put this sadness inside of me
Why be so matter-of-fact
Why put this one bit of hope in me
You sold me out and that's that

I hope that you're having fun with me
There's not much left to attack
I hope that you're nearly done with me
You sold me out and that's that

All sold out I'd never seen
A mind so tangled, a girl so strangled
All sold out, well I felt so green
It was just like that, I was put down flat
I was sold out just like that
Oh baby

Hey hey, hey hey, hey hey, that’s that

All sold out I'd never seen
A mind so tangled, a girl so strangled
All sold out, well I felt so green
It was just like that, I was put down flat
I was sold out just like that

I missed the point of you doing it
Your mind has just jumped the track
I took a bit different view of it
You sold me out and that's that

Hey hey, hey hey, hey hey, that’s that

Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Between The Buttons” LP
(Decca SKL 4852) UK, January 20, 1967

One of my favourite!

One of several reasons why 'Between The Buttons' is my favourite album!

Note that the instrumental backing track is about 30 seconds longer than the released version.

Has Bill said be played organ on the track? The basic block chording, ie similar to Brian's organ part on LSTNT suggests it's:

Brian Jones - hammond organ, recorder
Ian Stewart - piano

...

It sounds like Keith is using the Vox UL-760's amp with the inbuilt fuzz engaged for the rhythm/riffing guitar.

Along with Mother's Little Helper and Paint It Black among the first flowering of psychedelia for the Stones. Crazy rhythm and mad volume control effect on the guitar. Love this one.

I've always loved that brief period between R&B/Beat & full-blown psychedelia, & many of my favourite albums are from this era (Revolver, Evolution, Roger The Engineer, Animalism, & of course Aftermath / Between The Buttons).

My absolute fave period in music, Sleepy City. I have many theories on why it was so great. For me it was the end of the Mod scene and beginnings of psychedelia and this period lasted roughly from Autumn 65 to about Autumn 66.

For starters the whole psychedelic thing was already starting to happen but only within a small circle of hipsters on either side of the Atlantic. In London the Beatles, The Stones, The Who, The Yardbirds, The Small Faces, The Kinks, The Creation and a few others were in on it and were part of a clandestine druggy scene based at clubs like The Ad Lib, Bag O'Nails, Whiskey A Go Go, Blazes etc. So it hadn't been corrupted, commercialised and ruined by the media. There was a real sense of adventure, experimentation, camaraderie and of wanting to push the existing musical boundaries to their limits. The availability of acid also helped widen the musical vista to a fully fledged colourful spectrum of sound.

But equally important were the great new musical effects that became available at this time most notably the fuzzbox and wah wah pedal. I particularly love the overdriven fuzz effect that was used a lot at this time. My fave singles from this era are Hey Girl and I've Got Mine by The Small Faces;Sunshine Superman by Donovan (recorded in autumn 65!);the mighty Paperback Writer and Rain by The Fabs; Keep On Running and Somebody Help Me by Spencer Davis, See My Friends, Dead End Street and Till The End Of The Day by The Kinks; Paint It Black, Get Off Of My Cloud, 19th Nervous Breakdown, Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Inside Looking Out by The Animals; My Generation, Substitute, Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere by The Who; Stop Stop Stop and On A Carousel by The Hollies; Wild Thing, I Can't Control Myself and With A Girl Like You by The Troggs. Some really really time defining songs.

Keith' guitar work on these little crashing solo's is so absolutely amazing. I always
wondered how it would be to live in the year 1966 and to have these solo's smashing in your
face. A question for guitar connaisseurs: is this a Les Paul taken to the edge?

Whoa! It was like they were already over everything and were old men! "There's nothing left to attack." BTB is the coolest album, so stoned out and just lots of fun.

Interesting comment from His Majesty:

Anyone comments on his statement?

Also, it's possibly Jack Nitsche on piano rather than Ian!?

i really love this tune. i'm a particular fan of Between The Buttons (ALL of it) but this is my favorite absolutely. The writing is so full of feeling and knowledge; ty for including the lyrics.

love Charlie here, those little breaks you know?...for me, i've always had a secret, well not so secret, (I've bitched about it here) love for the outstanding rocking nature of this long overlooked gem...it pounds, it's full of feeling; never mocks your intelligence or plays it cheap...brilliant...

i even feel (even rather strongly) that this is a first class number, so brilliant and beautiful and pounding that it could be a concert opener...yep, really feel that way...

my obsession would be my second fave from buttons...and i really like the whole dang thing...
brian wilson was at some of those sessions btw...a little piece of trivia that always absolutely warms my heart.

I can see a few of the songs from BTB being trotted out and expanded on stage, like My Obsession. One thing I am tired of in their live act is the absence of new blood in the side musicians. Chuck Leavell is serviceable, but there's no Preston or Hopkins brilliance there. I'd love to hear them use a vibraphone and really play Under My Thumb right. Of course that would require a bass player who could groove, and I don't think that's going to change either. Bring out someone who could actually play the recorder part on Ruby Tuesday. So much possibility, but I'm afraid they're locked into doing things the same old way.

this is one of the best rolling stones i ever heard. i have long been a between the buttons proponent here. ever since i first got here. especially all sold out, my obsession, amanda jones...but really very more on that exquisite album where the boys conciously take on dylan and the amazing beatle and dylan releases that were released co-currently and the year before. it's a transitional album in context, yes...i agree and admit. but on it's own it has ALWAYS been a major stones masterpiece to me. i totally stand by it tho i personally don't know ONE other person who does...(i've read some reviews by people who have but they are rare it seems)....i've even posted here that All Sold Out should and could be an opening number on a tour. i really believe in that song. and my obsession too.
i think it could have had jjf resonance in their catalog and in the culture and on stage if it weren't for twists of fate and intent and promotion variables etc...that's my opinion anyway. i still believe that. i yammer on about whatever here but i'm very consistent about loving dance little sister and between the buttons album to the point of really FANATICism and fandom. they just GET to me what can i say. the killer KILLEr simple but intense repeating little mini drumbeat solos POW. take that. the lyrics....
ok i'm a big kinks fan so perhaps i was able to more love this album than my friends at the time (and now)...i really thought i felt and heard keith and mick's voices as writers here. taking on dylan and a lof of the mega dylan-influenced stuff lennon was putting on revolver and rubber soul....

i love buttons. yeh probably oldham shouldn't have been 'producer' cause i don't think he had the 'ears' of say brian jones!! who visited rca while these songs were being cut!!!! and some of the critiques as to general sonics to resonate with me. but all sold out is a killer rolling stone song. a killer rock song. the writing on that one and buttons is wonderful. all sold out is as good as jumping jack flash and just as rocking. maybe in this one case someone should REMIX that one....

Between The Buttons (UK-version!) is one of the 3 (maybe even 2) most played studio Stones albums by this person. It hasn't the lame fun of Some Girls but it is so fresh and pure and a feast to listen to. Great lyrics, great music.

All Sold Out, I have the tune in my head the moment I think of it. It represents BTB very well. Connection, another fine one. And then finally Something Happened To Me Yesterday! Between the Buttons or Beggars? I'm afraid I'll choose Buttons.

Awesome song! I've got BTB in my car CD player. I have always loved the lyric "Your mind has just jumped the track", along with the "hey hey's". Very clever.

How close to BTB was the single "Have You Seen Your Mother Baby"? Also, think of "Ride On Baby". The songs from this era had a certain propulsiveness and pop drive that also remind me of Petula Clark in an odd sort of way. It was all Swinging London. Love that era.

One of my favourite albums, right down to the cover, and I love All Sold Out for Charlie's fantastic drumming in particular. I played this album to death in my teens.

This song was the first time I ever thought that Charlie Watts was a good drummer.
