as i already noted, Lady Jayne, i'm acquainted with libel law from my spell as a journalist in the US,
and yes, it might be different in the UK. is it possible in the UK to successfully sue someone for libel
for saying they thought you looked unwell??

No it isn't. But you have edited your post since I replied.

That is an inaccurate general statement of the law here (and, in fact, in the US!)

I am not sure who Ronnie's current publicist is (and different members of the family have certainly used different individuals) but if it is important to you I am sure a polite e mail to the journalist will elicit the name.

yes...quite a pleasant surprise back when i purchased the picture disk (lp)
from the local used record shop 25 yrs ago. ronnie has a lot of great solo stuff.

and thanks for steering this thread away from the libel/publicist "discussion".

Great to see how many fans are capable of grasping the wider picture isnt it? angry smiley

Its amazing that there are actually people who profess to be Rolling Stones fans who would actually welcome something horrible (and maybe even fatal) happening to a band member if it meant there would be an extremely remote (to the point where its non existent) possibility of the Stones reacting to it by re-hiring a band member who quit 34 years earlier, and the even slimmer possibility that it means they're all going to make records and perform like they did back then.

Its not an exaggeration either - we've read this crap before when Ronnie's had problems in the past.

Idiots.

>> You originally wrote "okay. in fact it's not legally libel if you believe that what you write is true - but anyway!" <<

yes, and that wasn't a very good way of expressing it - "reasonable belief" is not quite that simple,
which is why i edited it. this is getting way beside the point of the thread, but if you're interested:
what i was taught, as a journalist in the US, is that being wrong about something is not libel.
libel is publishing a defamatory statement that you know to be untrue or have no reasonable grounds for.

giving your opinion about something is also not libel. so (going back to the wedding example)
according to US law you would not be at risk of being sued for stating that Ronnie looked unwell to you -
which you say is true in the UK too, so ... good!

sorry for the digression, folks - back to our regularly scheduled thread :E

ps: okay, i looked it up on wikipedia, for what that's worth: [en.wikipedia.org]
the part about US laws that i'm recalling from my experience as a journalist is the "public figure doctrine":
to win a libel suit a public figure has to prove that the publisher either knew a defamatory statement was false
or failed to take reasonable steps to confirm its veracity. private individuals can claim good faith -
as in "i believed it was true" - as a defense in a libel suit; newspapers are normally expected
to be more careful than private individuals about doublechecking the veracity of defamatory statements.
they also of course often carry media liability insurance in case of libel suits. i bet the Sun does! :E

I rest my case...

Re: Ronnie Ronnie Ronnie

I remember Ronnie at Downsview, the "SARS" concert, coming with the rest of The Boys to play his ass off to pull Toronto out of a tourism slump after a tragic epidemic.

I remember Ronnie playing in Vancouver about a week after he lost his brother and wondering how he could be playing so well after such a loss, and what it cost him to do so.

I remember Ronnie at an O2 show last August taking his post-intro bow with half a banana in his hand, quickly scarfed when he had the chance to get some energy back, and Mick introducing him as "...on the banana!" to much loving applause.

I remember Ronnie at the last O2 gig, waving and smiling to a thrilled little girl sitting on a man's shoulders within the FOS family area and marvelling that it must be his grand-daughter.

I remember Ronnie at the NYC press conference on March 30th, 3 days before the alleged problems started. He was quiet but smiling and relaxed. Then standing within 2 feet of him for several minutes later that afternoon as he fooled around with Charlie and joked with Keith. They were all there but Ronnie was the closest. There was no smell of alcohol - from any of them - and aside from being grateful to be there, I was glad they all appeared so well.

And I remember family holidays overshadowed by alcoholism.

Be well, Ronnie and family.

Great post Gazza, I was about to post something similar. Ronnie is very sick and could use all the help and support he can get. It's appalling to see how many 'fans' are more interested in the future of the band than in the health of one of the members.

If I could bet enough money that I don't have I'd bet that Mick Taylor hasn't even been thought of in the great confines of the toilet yet alone at all within the context of rejoining the band. There is no way that has gone through any of the Stones' heads.

had more than a drink. alcoholism is pretty deadly, unless you're Keith Richards

I hope friends and family pull him through.

And some people on here take things way too seriously instead of being able to take a joke. No, alcoholism isn't funny. But neither is rampant speculation about a man's helth without having any firsthand knowledge about it.But that doesn't stop many people from openly commenting on it either.

...and no doubt you decided to jump to the same conclusions back then, choosing to take a somewhat pious and sanctimonious stance against those who were merely introducing a bit of light-heartedness and levity to an otherwise serious situation.

We're all on Ronnie's side for chrissakes, but IF the band had any plans to tour, you can bet your last litre of petrol that once again those fabulous glimmer twins would be making THEIR contingency plans in the event that Honest Ron wasn't up to it.

Just like they did before the Licks tour.

Gazza in all fairness you're tarring these fans with the one brush, but in a sense these fans desire to see Taylor back in there are getting accidentally mixed up with these latest events. Yeah I hope Ronnie gets himself together but I think that if the Stones were to go out on the road again and there was the slimmest possibility that Taylor could be included in the mix then I would be all for it (Ronnie included)! The plain truth is that Taylor is still a more gifted lead player than Ronnie, Keith, Blondie and whoever else is hiding behind the curtains put together! Even Taylor in his current state would still make mince meat of any other current Stones member on the guitar. If you profess to be a Stones fan then I can't believe that you would not be the least bit tempted at the slimmest possibility of this prospect! Rock n Roll is all about outlandish dreams at the end of the day anyway! Ronnie was Mr Air Guitar for most of the licks tour. He was so so on the euro 2006 tour and with all my greatest respect for him he held it together for the band on the euro 2007 tour. However after seeing Neil Young on this 2008 tour for the price of €82 then it has made me think that if they are to go out on the road again then they seriously have to offer something that does not include giant sized big screens, football pitch sized stages and for the most part smoke and glass when it comes to the content of the show itself. Yeah it's an enjoyable spectable and yes I will always love the Stones but what annoys me most is that they seem to be content to go out as a circus act sacrificing their art for greenbacks! Seeing Neil Young the other week you were in fact witnessing Art being created in front of your face and I'm not talking about that painter who does the canvases for every song LOL! We all know that they have it within them to make calls and do one last tour where the integrity of the musical content is the main premise of the gig rather than their unrivaled vanity as having to be the number one box office draw. Neil Young doesn't care about this, Dylan doesn't give a toss about this and even though I ain't a Bruce fan but I respect him down to the ground the Boss doesn't give a toss about this! No one is expecting them to do it like they did back in 1973 and no one is expecting a new record but you cannot tell me that it would not be heaven on earth to see someone up there with them that sprinkled more of his fair share of musical magic on the Stones in a period of just five years!

We shouldn't be worried about the fate of the Stones...just Ronnie the individual.

The Stones PROBABLY won't even start a tour for another 6 months....there's tons of time for Ronnie to shape up. As much as some don't want to believe it....the Stones don't tour without him. Why would they even consider touring without him at this point? There's no concrete plan for a tour...nor even a contract signed. Why would they be thinking about a replacement?

At this point, they're not ready for someone different to come in...that would disrupt their flow to much. The group includes Ronnie. Period. There's still a huge window for him to clean up and by then...the Stones will roll out.
