Are you referring to David Gilmore from Pink Floyd? I would have to say David. I just watched a dvd of them the other day. He's great! I just wish they would put out just one more record.

Technically, Gilmour is probably better. Soul and spirit wise, Keith is definitely better...I'd much rather see a Keith show than I would a Gilmour show.

Gilmour may have better chops, but I'd rather see even a 2007 Stones show with Keef over any Floyd/Gilmour show.

Thats kinda an unfair question as Keith has really been known as a rythm guitarist since about 69(and theres a case to be made that he may be the BEST rythm guitarist of all time!) other than the occasional blues or Berry number. Gilmour,aside from all his "acid " rock reputation is basically a blues guitarist if you listen to his stringbending style of playing. I will say that on the "Tribute To The King" dvd that Wyman put together at Abbey Road Studios with Scotty Moore and guests that David brought down the house with his version of "Don't". Even Wyman and the other musicians were openly impressed and shaking their heads in astonishment. And you can imagine how jaded they are with seeing superstar guitarists.

True, it's a silly question. One COULD ask: which do you like better, but that's entirely subjective.

There's no such thing as technical ability on a guitar. What would that mean? Would that mean being inventive? Would it mean playing fast? Knowing a lot of chords? Ability to play with 'feeling'? Having an enjoyable vibrato? Having a cool sound?

No, there's no competition.

imo, the question is stupid and any possible answer leads to nothing...

if one of them by any definition is a "better player than the other" - than what?

sorry but thats just another bullshit comparison, like whats tasting better, apples or oranges. theyre playing totally different music, and each one is great, Gilmour and Keith. if you listen to early Floyd stage numbers like 'Blues', it becomes apparent that Gilmour also can play blues extremely well, just with the Floyd, theres rarely a chance to do so. but again, its like apples and oranges, and it surely does not come down to whos technically better or whos more soulfoul. also Gilmour can play extremely soulful, just listen to the numerous great live recordings of early Floyd shows. it must be said however that from Dark Side-era onwards there was lesser and lesser room for improvisations and variations and a guitar player like Gilmour had to stick to a certain scheme or arrangement. Keith was always more free-form, but in the last couple of years he did not always use his freedom to satisfying results, just my take. both are great players, and its a matter of taste whos the one to prefer. I prefer Keith, but I could not say a bad word about Gilmour.

I'm not going to say one is "better" than the other but there's no disputing Dave can still hit the exact same notes he did 30 years ago where Keith seems to have a time at it. I've often wondered why this is, maybe arthritis, just take a close look at his fingers.

Come on people. This is a no-brainer. Gilmour cannot hold a candle to Richards from a song writing standpoint and look at the back catalogue. We commonly refer endearingly to Richards as "Keith" for a good reason...

How about stage presence. Once again Keith has it hands over. Their styles are unique and each has forged new ground over the years. I would give a nod to Gilmour and, frankly, to a host of other select "session" players to lend their chops on various projects.

But Keith is in a class all of his own which Gilmour could only dream of touching!

Still, a discussion that leads to nothing.

Stupid question. Whichever one you prefer man. I wish people wouldn't ask these daft questions. They play in two different styles for starters.

David Gilmour is much better technically. But Keith together with The Rolling Stones beats anything, anyhow, anywhere.
