When did Clapton play with the Who?

Unless its The Who backing his version of 'Eyesight to the Blind' on the "Tommy" soundtrack.

Otherwise, I cant think of anyone but Hopkins.

Glyn Johns has mixed/engineered/produced all three bands, if that counts.

In an interview some years ago (1980's?)Townsend said that he never really met Clapton until Jimmy Hendrix came to town and Eric called him and asked if he wanted to join him at the show.
He said after that, he didn't keep in touch with Eric.
It's been a while since I heard this so I don't remember the exact words.

Maybe whatever Clapton did for Tommy, the Who weren't around or in the studio at the time.

I don't know about The Who...but Billy Preston played with the Beatles (Let It Be album and film) and of course the Stones in '75.

Clapton has guested on stage with the Stones and played a solo on one version of Brown Sugar.

I can't think of anyone who has played with The Who....I sure its possible some musician made that mark since '89, which was I believe the beginning of The Who having supporting musicians onstage.

the shoot 'em dead, brainbell jangler!

Al Kooper, kind of:

Stones - "You Can't Always Get What You Want"
Who - the Who Sell Out album
Beatles - w/George & Ringo in the late '70s

Clapton and Townend met up and both played on Ronnie Lane's solo records in the mid 70s, I believe.

Like rattler2004 I also thought of Preston.
Did Leon Russel play with the Liverpudlians? Or Who?

Is it just me, or is it debatable whether the Who ought be put
as high up as in this headline, to be compared with the Very Greatest?

Clapton I - btw - see as a young guitar practisin' dude who started
thanks to Stones & the circle arounb them.

I think the notorious percussionist Ray Cooper (If you can't rock me) should be mentioned too, although he also played mostly with seperate Beatles on soloprojects.

Preston never played with the Who. Clapton has played on a live Stones album, lead guitar on 'While my guitar gently weeps' and has performed a song on the 'Tommy' soundtrack (in the film it shows him being backed by the Who when doing so, but I'm not sure if they did so on the actual record)

There are lots of musicians who played on Who records down the years (from 1965 on) and on tour post-1979 when Rabbit Bundrick became their onstage keyboard player.

Jimmy Page, for example, plays on 'I Cant Explain' which means he has played on records by both the Who and Stones. Never played on a Beatles record though.

Several of the band members of the 3 groups have played on one of the other band's recordings, but not both - Jagger, Lennon, McCartney, Townshend etc.

Pete Townsend was one of the main people behind getting Eric out of his early 70's reclusive heroin addict period, playing and organizing a comeback gig for Eric at the rainbow in 1973 and so on.

Yeah,I was thinking about the Raibow gig too. I remember reading where Eric actually turned many of the leads over to Ronnie Wood and it changed peoples perceptions about Rons ability as a lead guitarist. Dont know about the validity of the story but what I read.

The album is great, and yes, Ronnie did some great leads there.

Jim Horn is actually the only musician to play on albums by all four Beatles. He played with the Stones and Clapton -now did he play with the Who?

No, Jim Horn never played with the Who.
Their brief flirtation with horns in 1979-80 consisted
of Reggie Brooks, Dave Casewell, and Dick Perry.
Hopkins, Clapton (sort of, the Tommy soundtrack), and Glyn Johns (sort of, engineer), are the only three, though it seems like there must be someone else.
Actually, Nicky Hopkins could have had the grand slam
(Beatles, Stones, Who, Dylan) as he was supposd to do Dylan's
tour of Europe in 1984, but backed out. Ian McLagan getting the chair.

Brief flirtation with the horns? What about Quadrophenia? Packed full of some great horn arrangements. But yes, it was Enwhistle who played the horns...(also My Wife:-)

Hopkins also played with the Kinks on some of their early stuff as well. He was an all round session musician of the 60s I guess!

I was talking about in concert, not studio.
Of course John played those great brass parts in the studio.
In concert, 1989 and beyond (if any), well...

The director Michael Lindsay-Hogg made promotional films with the Beatles, The Stones and The Who in the 1960s...
