Stones' Content: John Phillips' "Pay Pack & Follow" CD
Posted by: bassplayer617 ()
Date: May 15, 2008 22:50

This album was recorded in the 70s, but not officially released until after Phillips' death in 2001. A buddy of mine played me a few tracks, and today I bought it from Amazon (they only have three more copies currently left in stock).

Mick & Keith produced/played on the sessions, and Mick is a co-writer on one track. The recordings also feature appearances by both Mick Taylor AND Ron Wood.

Here's info I c/p from the nzentgraf site:

CD ‘Pay, Pack And Follow’(Eagle Records EAG CD 171). Producers: The
Glimmer Twins. Sound engineer: Keith Harwood. Recorded in late August &
September 1976 (and sporadically until early 1977) in London, Olympic Sound
Studios and London, Island Studios. (working titles: ‘Phillips 77’ and 'Half
Stoned’). Incl.
- Oh Virginia (John Phillips) -Chris Spedding on guitar
- Very Dread (John Phillips) -Chris Spedding on guitar
- Zulu Warrior (MJ/John Phillips) -Rebop on percussion, Laura and Michelle
Phillips on backing vocals
Musicians: MT (gtr)/MJ (bvoc)/KR (gtr, bvoc)/RW (bass)/CW (dr; unconfirmed)/
John Phillips (voc, gtr)/Jean Roussell (keyb)/James Biondillo (strings)/
Ollie E. Brown (perc)
Note: Also a promotional version of this album was released in early 2001 incl.
- Boys From The South (John Phillips) -bonus-track with possible
participation of MT on guitar.

Oh, man, somebody is paying attention. Amazon has only ONE copy left.

I thought this had been pretty widely circulated for a long time but guess I was wrong.

"She's Just Fourteen! would've made a great Stones track.

Keiths Guitar and Micks Backing Vocals on this track are worth the price of the cd alone!!!

Yeah I think Mick was taking advice from Bill in that situation!

Thanks for bringing this album up Bassplayer617. I've been meaning to get it, but just never got around to it.

Just bought myself a used copy for $10 via Amazon a minute ago!

I really like this record. Bought it when it came out. It's got a REALLY 70s sound; it's like that extra Stones record you wish they'd made between Goats Head and Black and Blue. I love "Oh, Virginia."

Yeah - great track and my favorite on the album. The singing is just brilliant!
So "elegantly wasted".

Got the CD today. An interesting mix of material, but yeah, some of it has a definite Stonesy feel. It is obvious that John & Keith spent quite a bit of time together, and undoubtedly fed off each others' artistic input and, umm, unhealthy recreational habits. Despite of this, or maybe because of it, it's an excellent record. As for "Oh Virginia", damn, THAT is just beautiful.

PS the song "2001" is both sad and creepy, as that's the year John passed away.

A must-have, IMHO.

If Rolling Stones played this one, as of now, they should change "14" to "40"....at least. Maybe "50".

Trivia note: at the end of "Pussycat", there's a snippet of someone playing "You Got to Move". Cool!

Haha!! Good one!

I just thought who may be the girl they are singing about (I mean on the original version)?

I think, it might be inspired by the young prostitute in Taxi Driver
or by Tatum O’Neal in Papermoon?

That Leibovitz picture of Keith and John STONED OUT OF THEIR MINDS on the back of the CD is worth the price alone.

mick was busy too, with I've Got My Own Album, John Lennon, Leslie West, and others. It seems like an interesting period. Unfortunately the Stones' albums, IORR in particular, suffered as a result of their diminished attention.

>> Man, Keith was pretty busy in 1974 <<

Pay Pack & Follow wasn't made in 74. see the details in the first post: it was made in 76 and 77.

According to John Phillips, some of Mick and Keith's participation occured as late as the mid '90's. According to the liner notes, the origional master tapes were lost twice. Quite a facinating story.

I'd recommend ebay for this title. You'll find it for 2 dollars...maybe 5 if you're unlucky.

I believe "Shes Only 14" is about Johns daughter Mackenzie who (according to her autobiography) was that age when Jagger seduced her?

Thanks for the information, scottkeef! I didn't know about John's daughter and her book. Yep, John singing about his daughter. Sounds convincing to me (regardless of Mick having an affair with her or not).

Great thread about a favorite album of mine. Papa John had at least one or two unreleased albums that hopefully will come out on Varese (they've released his Wolfking and Jack of Diamonds so far). I'm fairly sure he has unreleased albums from 1982 and 1992; someone else here probably knows better.
