The Beach Boys Mike Love's RNR Hall of Fame speech and the Stones

With the inductions coming up, a little revisit to a past induction speech by a "drunken" (supposedly) Mike Love chastising Mick Jagger and others. What did you think?

Copy of Mike Love's speech at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony from 1988:

(Mike was cut off when Paul Schaffer led the house band into a song).
"And I think it's wonderful to be here tonight, but I also think it's sad that there are other people who aren't here tonight. And, uh, those are the people who have passed away, those are the obvious ones. But the other not-so-obvious ones are people like Paul McCartney, who couldn't be here tonight because he's in a lawsuit with Ringo and Yoko. That's what he sent a telegram to some, uh, high priced attorney in this room, you know. And that's a bummer, because we're talking about harmony, right, and the world. If we can't get it together in America and in England, and harmony within our groups. I mean, beleive it, you can beleive it the Beach Boys have their own "interstescene" (not sure what Mike is trying to say here, and neither does Mike) or whatever you call it, squabbles. But that's a bummer when Ms. Ross can't make it, you know?" "The Beach Boys have continued to do, about, we did about 180 performances last year. I'd like to see the Mop-Tops match that! I'd like to see Mick Jagger get out on this stage and do I Get Around versus Jumpin' Jack Flash, any day now. And I'd like to see some people kick out the jams, and I challenge the Boss to get up on stage and jam. (during Mike's pause, someone in the house band plays the theremin line of "Good Vibrations" during the crowds tepid response) I wanna see Billy Joel, see if he can still tickle ivories, lemmee see. I know Mick Jagger won't be here tonight, he's gonna have to stay in England. But I'd like to see us in the Coliseum and he at Wembley Stadium because he's always been chickenshit to get on stage with the Beach Boys."

You do not even have to be a great BB's fan (I am) to be embarrassed by Love's stupid and ungracious comments. The BB's would have been nothing without him and if you ask him he'll tell you all about it. His nephew is a great basketball player, though. Go, Bruins!

Mick's chickenshit to get on the same stage as the Beach Boys?!? I'm sure you can catch the current version of the Beach Boys at a local casino near you. I believe Mike Love tours with a backup band now a days as the Beach Boys.

I think the only time the two bands shared the stage was the TAMI show.

They shared the stage in Birmingham (AL) back in '65 -- Mick mentioned it during the '89 show. I just checked and sure enough, Mick was correct: supporting acts for May 7, 1965 in Birmingham were The Beach Boys, The Righteous Brothers, Marty Robbins & Skeeter Davis.

Maybe Mike has a chip on his shoulder because the Beach Boys formed in 1961 and had their first hits in 1963, "Surfer Girl" and "Little Deuce Coupe". He probably thinks that since they were there first they should get more respect. Oh well. The fans decide that.

Fantastic speech. They should have released it on the Beach Boys box set. Seriously.

They play sheds. Outdoor...summer...type shows...right? Who is the lead singer these days?

It might be fun to see "The Beach Boys" with current line-up of today with the current "Lynyrd Synyrd" line-up of today.

Or go see cover bands of the aforementioned groups, they'd be about as 'real' and play just as well.

Mike don't be hatin,' show us some Love.

This was the year when Bob Dylan was inducted and in his short speech he mentioned Mike Love and adressed him directly, saying "Peace and harmony are very important, indeed! But so is forgivness."

I remember that afterwards that night, while on stage during the all-star jam session, Mick picked up Mike's shoes, that were for some reason lying on the stage, and threw them into audience.

He was just being true to his school, as in "What's the matter buddy? Ain't you heard of my school? It's #1 in the state!"

Mike was important to the Beach Boys, in kind of the same way that Ringo was important to the Beatles. His insecurity over that simple fact has led to all kinds of crap over the years. He got his final comeuppance when Brian redid Smile and won every award you can think of.

Mike Love isn't a pimple on Mick's fanny.

Mike was important to the Beach Boys, in kind of the same way that Ringo was important to the Beatles.

If by this you mean to suggest that Ringo isn't very important to the Beatles, you're wrong. He's a better drummer than given credit for, and a fantastic personality to boot.

More than that, Ringo never created strife among the band. All the Beatles loved him, and vice-versa.

Comparing him to Mike Love is an insult.

Mike Love is a jerk. A bald jerk who was lucky enough to be related to the Wilsons.

But his RnR HoF speech is the least of his offenses. He's just talking smack...it's a throwback to "the Battle of the Bands!" kind of stuff.

The one of Mike ranting is still up (as of this writing) - go tp YouTube and search "Mike Love rant".

The song "F*ck you, Mike Love" has been removed though. Really funny if you can find it - he says "Brian Wilson, we liked you" and so forth through Carl, Dennis, and Al - then he says "Al Jarreau, we even liked you, but F*ck you, Mike Love". "

That was 20 years ago, ancient history.

Even Beach Boys fans share a contempt for Mike Love, given his lawsuit-hungry mentality against his own family members.

There's no need, however, to disparage the impressive recording history of the Beach Boys. It's a body of work that any group would be proud to own. Hell, even Blondie Chaplin was a Beach Boy, and did the best work of his career on their Holland album.

Please understand that I love the Beach Boys - I saw them in 1981 just before I saw the Stones for the 1st time.

All 5 originals were on stage - one of the last times.

I've seen Mike and Bruce with their hired guns since then (no Wilsons in sight). Love the music, just think Mike is a jerk. Long live Brian.

Mike Love... wasn't he in Brian Wilson's old band or something?

Although your world wonders me
With you majestic superior crackling hen
Your people I do not understand
So to you I wish to put and end
And youll never hear surf music again

I saw the Beach Boys in concert in 1991 - two years after that incident.

Excellent show, it has to be said - but during it, Love for some reason decided to make some inane jibe about the rumoured Jagger/Bowie 'tryst' (a story which was already a year old) in between songs at one point. It barely drew a yawn.

He obviously has some obsession with Mick for reasons only known to himself.

I guess because they were the lead man of highly successful band - no real comparison though - apples to oranges.

Funny...and even funnier when you realise that 'fanny' means something very different over here than it does in the US!
