OT: Southern Storms
Posted by: gmanp ()

A lot of people lost their lives, their loved ones, and property last night as big storms raced across the southern U.S.
It'd be nice to "spare a thought" for these folks today.

Rough ride this afternoon, Bro, but no deaths or major damage in our area (mid-south Georgia) that I know about. Thanks for yo' concern.

Global warming? Ummmm, no, the southern and midwestern states have had tornados since the beginning of time.

But not normally this time of year. Record highs in Alabama -- it reached 81 in Tuscaloosa a couple of days ago. For February, that's *not* normal.

Hang in there guys... I'm just dealing with a little rain out here in So. Cal.

Feel for you dealing with those twisters... That one story about the infant
found in the field was heart-warming...

It was 83 degrees in Birmingham, AL on February 8, 1918.

Since 1950 the US has averaged about 25 tornados each February. In February 1950 there were 45 and in 1956 there were 47. Hell, there were 61 tornados in DECEMBER of 1960.

While tragic, I don't see a trend to suggest its attributable to global warming

I think we're talking about specific states here -- it is *not* normal in the South for Feb. Maybe it is elsewhere (and I never attributed it to global warming). You can't argue with record highs though.

Not getting into the global warming fray, but last night, we had some thunder & lightning with the rain that was falling. I'm about 20 miles north of Boston. It's not typical, but does happen occasionally. It was snowing when I woke up this morning.

One of the coolest weather events I can remember was in March 1978, we had thunder and lightening while it was snowing one night. It was kinda spooky.

I've seen that once or twice in the 20+ years I've lived in the area and I'd agree, it is a bit spooky when it happens.

Thunder in winter is more common than one usually have the notion of.

Actually, we can have tornadoes any time of the year that cold air meets warm air. They're just more likely in the spring. thumbs down

Hey, Elmo, is it really already spring over there.. ? smiling smiley
Remember ya had put some local paper wrapped'round some stuff
in a package to me... I read sl. "Now in spring" and that was this month, February.

Here spring is in May, at some lucky years in April.

Our spring usually starts around mid-March, but we're having some really nice weather right now (highs in the 60's F). Near freezing at night though.

April and October/November are when it's great around here.

The people are great year-around in our rural area. Just a few a-holes and rednecks. Mostly good, easy-going people.

That's the crutch - global warming. I guess 9/11 got old? The ozone layer no longer has the hole's in it - you don't hear those people complaining anymore - what happened to THEM?

It it's global warming, how come it got down to 26 degrees here in SE LA (Louisiana, not Lower Alabama)? That's not 'global' or 'warming'. One or two days of extreme temperatures means nothing, because when it gets back down into the mid digits next whenever wherever up North everyone's gonna forget about that global warming day when it was 60 degrees or whatever. 82 degrees.. in Birmingham, since when does that matter?
