New album Ronnie Wood!
Posted by: the juf ()
Date: February 1, 2008 14:47

Ronnie is running a competition on his website ; enter the “caravan” section.
This year he wants to record a new cd with special guests and asks fans to submit their favourite 1970, non-Wood tracks. (Hence no Stones)

Ronnie on his website:
I get so many emails and requests from you guys asking me to record specific tracks I wanted to give you the chance to actually make that happen.
So tell me the name of one song the people of 2008 need to hear a Woody version of.

The track must be released in the 1970s and it must be something you will think appeal to the people of today.

The competition only runs for 10 days so nothing too obscure please.

If your track is chosen, you will be credited on the album, and I will send you a signed copy before release.
Thank you guys and I m looking forward to reading your submissions.

Ronnie X

I vote for "Ernie - The Fastest Milkman in the West" by Benny Hill. Was released in the 70's and was number 1 for 5 weeks, so its definitely not obscure.

Funny initiative! Something to think about.
From the 70's? Hmm... is he gonna sing himself, too?
Is "Wuthering Heights" an alternative?

[peering hard:] it doesn't say "no Stones", actually, does it? technically we could request - [forcible self-censorship]
er no, that would be just plain sick. sorry, my sense of humour is getting more warped by the minute

exactly, it doesn't say "no Stones" on his website, but Wooden Records has confirmed this.

What was the opening instrumental song of his The Gunslingers Tour with Jim Satten Band?
Theme song of movie? FBI? I don't remember. That was cool.

Hey, open-g, Speddings Motorbikin'immediately came into my mind too when I was reading this thread and started thinkin' about possible tracks. I still have to check my original single, but I think it's a Chinn-Chapman song written for Chris Spedding (released on RAK at the time).

Good one, but I cannot imagine a Stone covering an extremely stones-style song like this!

Wow, Chinn-Chapman wrote a lot of well known songs, but Motorbikin' wasn't among them - well, at least not in that list:

it might just be Spedding then.

haha - check out the real audio samples - it's hilarious

I wanted to submit a Johnny Winter song.

I'm Yours and I'm Hers would have had an interesting Stones tie-in but is from '69.
Still Alive And Well is probably the obvious and best choice.
I couldn't help myself and had to go semi-obscure: Too Much Seconal. It actually would be a great Woody song and allow him to show off his acoustic chops.

The suggestion of a Meters track is a great idea too and will probably appeal to him.

A smart aleck submission might be Leather Jacket by Mick Taylor. Too bad Si, Si (je suis un rock star) came out in the '80's.eye popping smiley Is there a Tucky Buzzard song that would appeal to Ronnie?winking smiley

why does it have to be from the 70s?

something else from Ian Hunter would be nice, as "Once Bitten"'s been done a few times. Maybe "Man O' War"?

"Every Step of the Way" by Ian Hunter. The only cover I'm aware of was The Monkees.

"We Gotta Get Out of Here"'s a bit dated, but fun. I still don't get ron's request for 70s-only. If he's going for something old, didn't he play through most of the 60s?

Is that the same Ian Hunter, Rocky?

To give the whole affair some depth, I'd like to mention Jerry Lynn Williams, whom Ronnie has covered before, and who would fit the bill with both his eponymous album and his 2nd, Gone.
Since I loved Ronnie's instrumentals from his last album, I feel there should also be some instrumental tunes included, but on the spot, I don't know any from the 70s, as I'm basically a "late borner".
To be honest, I don't quite like the idea of Ronnie doing a covers album, since I found his version of "So You Wanna Be A Rock N Roll Star" to be rather forgettable.
But he's made a choice and that is to be respected.
I'll say it again, I'm not an expert on the 70s, but some of my favourites have been around then, like John Hiatt or T-Bone Burnett, who was in the Alpha Band then. But these choices might be too obscure for the concept. The Fabulous Thunderbirds' debut album from 79 would be another idea. Or some Ramones maybe? Or some outlaw country like Tompall Glaser?
I'm not quite sure what song would work, and before I recommend some crap, I prefer to not join the "Caravan" on his site for the competition. Maybe you get inspired by these ideas to make some interesting choices.
