Why I Paid $37,100 for One Record

John Tefteller just paid the highest price ever for a single 78 rpm record. The record collector and blues fanatic explains why he actually got a good deal.

Wow!!! ....that's cool bloomer ... It was a hot news back
around 1990 when someone found at that time the only known
copy of Ridin' Horse - Alcohol and Jake Blues but man they were
pretty rough sound quality esp Ridin' Horse which was the A-side
and copped the most playing ... but now this copy turns-up ....

Love the seller story too.... thanks bloomer

I traveled to South Carolina the night before the auction was over.
I was that confident that it wasn't going anywhere else other than home
with me. I checked into a hotel at 7 P.M. the night before it was over
and e-mailed the seller and said, "I would like to come over and have a
look at this before I make my final bid." He wrote back, "Nope. I'm
definitely afraid of going outside the house with this thing. I don't
want anyone knowing my address. You wouldn't believe what types of
scams people have been trying to perpetrate on me with this record.
Someone wroteme from New York City saying the record had been stolen
from him and they wanted it back immediately. If you end up the winner,
I'll meet you somewhere

Gotta love Tommy Johnson esp those first recordings with
Charlie McCoy in Memphis early 1928 ... The twin guitar attack...

A recollection of Jagger attending a Smiths concert in 1986 From page 200 of Morrissey's autobiography (released yesterday) -

"In New York, Mick Jagger arrives backstage and extends the hand of friendship. It is a big moment for Johnny, but I, of course am a nightmare of judgement, and it takes me years to realise the genius secret of the Rolling Stones. Dismissal can be a secret form of arrogance, and I held this proudly against the Stones until the light shifted and I caught myself being entirely wrong. The in built censorship can also often be a substitute for not actually knowing any better, and I now agonise over my criticism of the Stones - with blather that was anything but a true relection of the facts. Mick Jagger only stayed for 4 song of the Smiths' set, but I felt no hurt at his departure because I could, even then, understand how my general being (which we dare not term a persona) was a lot for people to take."

I remember reading an interview with Morrissey a long time ago and he said something to the effect of: I've met both Mick and Keith and they are very nice people but the problem is the music.

I'm glad he has changed his mind and he is no longer as big of a prick.

I have to say, Keith's writing style is so much better than Bill's...sparse, lovely and memorable. Bill started to lose me with the dates and times.

Keith seems to play poetically loose with what happened. Bill will tell you what happened.

Just in terms of writing style, though, I agree with latebloomer. It's like in his book, I wouldn't necessarily rely on it for the details of what happened, but the way he expressed himself, particularly when talking about music, was so articulate (which is what I think surprised people).

Yeah 24, I'll grant you Bill is more on the money with the facts, but Keith's writing is more elegant and expressive, which is what I think Aqua is saying.

Facts are always debatable...you either have style or you don't. grinning smiley

Nice to read the Howlin Wolf London article.
I bought the album when it came out because of Charlie and Bill. But I only got really into it many years later. Some good stuff and all those players.
Still don't have the deluxe edition.

“Groupies are music-loving muses”

"I'm with the Band" author Pamela Des Barres on Keith Moon, Gram Parsons and her torrid affair with Jimmy Page

I was in the right place at the right time with the right look and the right taste. Mick Jagger came up to Miss Mercy at a Burritos gig and said, “Please introduce me to your pretty friend.” That’s how I met Mick. Jimmy Page’s road manager came up to me at a Bo Diddley gig and handed me his phone number and said, “He’s waiting for you in room 605.” I didn’t have to go after these people. I was in the GTOs, I had an all-girl group, I was hanging out with Zappa, and I was in the thick of everything in Hollywood. People wanted to meet us. Early on, of course, I chased the Beatles, I tried to meet the Stones—and I did meet a couple of them when I was with Captain Beefheart—but I was just in the right place at the right time, but with the right attitude and the right love of the music, and my appreciation of what these people were doing was completely sincere.

Would you happen to know the date of that pic? I'm curious as it seems to be circa 1973 or it could be retro - hard to tell. Thanks
