Well Gazza, I wasn't suggesting a menage de trois... "he can join us for breakfast" MEANS in the dining room. November will be fine, my birthday is the 16th. I'll bring the champagne! And Eric, you mean to say you won't by the Mick cd based on one song? If that was the case, no one would buy Stones cds. Not all tracks are great ones( on most cds in the Stones catalog), but they sure are full of gems, for the most part. Gazza, I bet by the end of our stay in London I can change your mind about a few matters!!!

Play your cards right and you'll have me even insisting Michael Cohl is Jesus reincarnated within about five minutes if you want....

But I do have all songs on that compilation allready, Debra - the one that's new to me, will be "Charmed Life".
The only thing of interest is a better sound quality for Too Many Cooks, but I can't support a poor effort like this just because of that slight upgrade. I think the song selection was lousy as well. Jagger has better cards than this up his sleeves.

In fairness, even the greatest artists have peaks and troughs when it comes to inspiration and creativity. For any artist in their 60's to be producing work on a par with that when they were young and 'hungry' is very unusual. One can cite the likes of Dylan (66), Springsteen (58 this week) or Neil Young (61) as three veteran artists who are still doing it somewhat regularly but even they have had periods of drought or lack of inspiration (Dylan recorded no albums of new material between 1990 and 1997, Springsteen had a lengthy spell of writers block in the late 80s, Young has had various periods where the words 'quality control' have appeared alien to him).

Its only really in the last decade or so where Keith's productivity as a writer has slowed down to a trickle. It happens to most writers at some point (even though Keith has insisted that the 'antenna' style of writing he adopts actually eliminates the risk of having writer's block).

As for the reason - personal opinion, but its probably to do with being in a comfort zone as an artist. The centre of direction/balance of power of the band has shifted away from Keith (IMHO) in the last decade to the degree where it appears, to me anyway, that the driving force behind what makes the Stones tick in 2007 is primarily Jagger and Cohl as opposed to Jagger and Richards.

... you actually don't know what Keith's productivity as a writer is these days,
or why his focus lately (outside the Stones) has been to contribute to other people's albums
rather than releasing his own. i don't know anything about it either - which is why i don't post theses about it.

charmed indeed ... what a thread. [turning up Stupid Girl way loud :E ... good night]

Maybe, but its his output that matters. Productivity without an end result is pretty meaningless.

"Michael Cohl is Jesus reincarnated within about five minutes if you want" Gazza your private life is no concern of mine!! now we all know how rocksoff gets the setlists so quickly!!!!

as for keiths writing. I know that keith has been writing a lot over the past few years. He's no longer concerned with writing for a commercial end- he just writes because thats what he does. yes he has thousands of feet of tape of unreleased material. He has no immediate plans to release it.

I dont think any arguments can be made or based on past performance theyre clearly beyond their creative peak, they have been for 30 years.

the tenderness in this comment, which first seems like an insult, has me laughing out loud.

it's hard for me to say what I think of the song minus the video, which is hideous. did the song need to be taken so literally in the images? I might have warmed to the song if it didn't now make me think of the knighthood, "Being Mick," and all that crap.

you know what ?

this morning under the shower I surprised myself singing "travelling... traaaaveling ouh"
oh my god this is "charmed life" and I like the chorus !

the weak part is the electronic loop, repetitive, boring. It requires a remix. Should I try to make it ?

Like said in another thread, Karis sings on backing vocals. You understand why Mick wants it.

Maybe some outtakes like Danger up ahead or gangsters moll (Mick version) would have been prefered.

Since last week Charmed Life is aired on a German Radio almost every day and the more I listen the better I like this song...

I don't know if somebody posted it already, but the full video of Charmed Life could be watched at the official site of Mick (www.mickjagger.com) around this weekend. And now it has been removed. Does anybody know why ?

why on RHINO records ? Mick is not any longer under contract ?

can we expect the songs to be remastered (for she's the boss period and Tosh duet) ? and not only put up on cd ?

The snippet of Junior Vasquez' remix on youtube and his comments that Jagger's vocal, guitar, and harmonica track reminded him of "Black Betty" led me to believe we were getting a dance-friendly rocker. Maybe something like "Rock and a Hard Place." Jagger's guitar at the beginning is similar to the riff he plays on the track, "Goddess in the Doorway." Its definitely Stonesish. The song falls apart for me with the almost complete lack of lyrics. It just sounds like he alternates cliched phrases along the lines of "I wash my hair" or "I'm doing my laundry" with the "Living the charmed life" phrase.

The rest of the track, if Junior Vasquez' remarks are anything to go by, was put together by various remix producers and then one remix was selected for inclusion on Rhino's CD. I suspect I would greatly prefer to hear Rick Rubin's original track with Jimmy Rip, Frank Simes, and Curt Bisquera playing on it. Losing those musicians and letting Ashley Beadle throw something together that might work in a club in 2007 will likely never appeal to me. I would have much preferred a TATTOO YOU approach if Mick re-did his vocals and rewrote the lyrics and added fresh musical overdubs to the remixed backing track. If we're lucky maybe there will be a CD single with at least Junior Vasquez' version since it sounded better to my ears.

As I was on my way to band practice last Tuesday, my brother called me up and said that the new Jagger song was on the radio. So he let me hear it through that. I thought it sucked BIG TIME. But then again: Mick Jagger's solo work has always been either super cool or super bad. It seems that, with him, there are no in-betweens. Charmed Life is one of the super bad ones (Like Let's Work, Joy, Visions Of Paradise, Hard Woman and the like).
