I'm almost positive that it was only JPJ but possibly John Bonham as well though definitley no Page nor Plant. There is a book written by one of the roadies or bodyguards where he tells the story. Apparently, Elvis and the Memphis mafia were all in their pajamas watching TV when the LZ party storms in. (I think) Peter Grant started using profane language which caused Elvis to jump up from the sofa and go into a karate stance. One of the Elvis party also went into a defensive mood and Elvis backed off. It seems that it broke the ice and Elvis started trading watches with them.
The roguish reputation dogged Led Zeppelin for years. In 1972, Elvis Presley wanted to meet the band. Their mutual promoter at the time, Jerry Weintraub, took Page and Plant up to Presley's Las Vegas hotel suite. For the first few minutes, Elvis ignored them.
Page—who had first picked up a guitar after hearing "Baby Let's Play House" on overseas radio—began to fidget. What was going on? Did he really want to meet them? Should they say something? Elvis finally turned to them. "Is it true," he said, "these stories about you boys on the road?" Plant answered, "Of course not. We're family men. I get the most pleasure out of walking the hotel corridors, singing your songs." Plant offered his best Elvis impersonation. "Treat me like a fool, treat me mean and cruuuuel, but looooove me...." For a moment Elvis Presley eyed them both very carefully. Then he burst out laughing. Then his bodyguards burst out laughing. For two hours he entertained them in his suite. He had never heard their records, he said, except for when his stepbrother played him 'Stairway to Heaven'. "I liked it," said Presley.
Later, walking down the hallway from the hotel room, Page and Plant congratulated themselves on a two-hour meeting with the King. "Hey," came a voice from behind them. Presley had poked his head out the door. "Treat me like fooool...." The double-lp Physical Graffiti was recorded over several months at Headley Grange. The intention was to make a straight-forward rock album. One song stood out early on. The album was planned to culminate in the hypnotic new track, "Kashmir." Fifteen years later, all three members point to this song as quintessential Zeppelin, the truest of their many recordings. "It's all there," explains John Paul Jones, "all the elements that defined the band..."
Does anyone have a copy of that Pamela Des Barres book, I'm With The Band?
I haven't read it for a long time, but I feel as though she mentioned seeing Elvis with Mick, possibly Keith too in Vegas. It's been a long time, but I have a memory of her sitting in one of those big old booths with them (there was no photo, just that's how she described it).
Off the subject a bit but I always remember the RSG show where the Stones had performed and then it was Howlin' Wolfs turn.Keith fordyce was interviewing the Stones about the influence of the next guest and Brian then said ''enough of the chat, can't we just listen to Howlin Wolf now and he proceeded to play with the Stones and the audience sitting on the floor around him!!Great memorys!

He couldnt have. The only time Elvis played concerts in NYC was on 9-10 June 1972. As I said above, the Stones were playing LA that weekend. Maybe he saw him at a later date somewhere near NYC, but to be honest it's something I think that would have been more widely reported if he had.

They opened their ears and grew up. They weren't alone.
hm: i don't agree that they lacked respect for Elvis when they were younger - they all mention him as part of the "first wave" of American music that lit them up; and Keith has called You're Right I'm Left She's Gone his favourite guitar solo, for example. but by the time they were of music-making age, Elvis was in the army; and then later was ... later.

Wasn't that suppose to be on Stripped? If anyone has that, I would love to hear it.
I don't think that Elvis's anti drug stan was a plot to get in with the establishment, but more tha the really didnt perceive prescribed drugs as a social problem. Remember Elvis wat heart was a good old country boy. Like a lot of people he made the distinction between legal and illegal drughs and not whetehr the drug in question was being abused. Also I think Nixon felt he was getting mre from Elvis than the other way around, great photo ops etc/
On the subject of visiting Elvis, Bruce tells a story in one of his presong rambles (cant recall what bootleg) wher he attempts to clim the wall at gracelands and go visit with Elvis.
There is also the scene in Spinal Tap where the visit Elvis's grave.

Thats on lots of bootlegs in the early 80's, when hes introducing "Johnny Bye Bye", a song he wrote about Elvis.
After a show in Memphis in April '76, he was in a cab with Steve van Zandt, the driver took them to Graceland and he decided on a whim he wanted to meet Elvis, so scaled the wall and walked right up to the door before being apprehended and asked what he wanted. His reply "er.. is Elvis home?" was met with a response of "No, hes in Lake Tahoe". The guard didnt take him seriously when he started the "I'm in a band, Elvis is my hero" schtick and escorted him to the gate...he still wasnt impressed when Bruce in a fit of desperation - uncharacteristically for him - pulled out the "I was on the cover of 'Time' and 'Newsweek'!" line.
A few months later he wrote "Fire" with the intention of giving it to Elvis, but Elvis died before he could do so. Robert Gordon then cut it and then the Pointer Sisters had a big hit with it a few months later.

They did record it, but unfortunately its never surfaced. Great song, I'd love to hear a Stones version.

Mick had to be in New York while not on tour with the Stones sometime. I think it was sometime in the early 70s. Maybe a time when he was hanging out with John Lennon? He mentioned not wanting to end up like Elvis - and this statement was made before Elvis died. Like I said, I remember reading something about it but as the years have gone by and having read too many Stones books to mention, my mind gets foggy with all the Stones info. Or is that the beer?

Indeed - but not at the same time as Elvis was,
I think it was sometime in > the early 70s. Maybe a time when he was hanging > out with John Lennon? He mentioned not wanting to > end up like Elvis - and this statement was made > before Elvis died.
he did..it was something along the lines of not wanting to play to old ladies in Las Vegas. Basically, he was getting at needing to stay 'current' and not be a nostalgia act. Ahem...
Like I said, I remember reading > something about it but as the years have gone by > and having read too many Stones books to mention, > my mind gets foggy with all the Stones info. Or is > that the beer?
HOT stamp.....just wish they'd put the Killer out for a lickin' too..But hey the Hank...Bob Wills.... Bessie Smith...Robert Johnson...Howlin' Wolf...Patsy Cline..etc were all damn fine

Whoa - slow down there, you've got your dates all messed up. David Cassidy was big in '71 (at least when I liked him), Pam's book came out about 1988, and I remembered it, so therefore so should you.
However, I got home and looked it up, and it was Led Zeppelin that she saw Elvis with in Vegas. She was amazed because they asked Jimmy Page if he wanted to meet Elvis and he said "no thanks".
Speaking of Elvis and Zeppelin, is it just me or did others think Zeppelin's song "Hot Dog" was a nod to Elvis? loog droog would probably agree....and let's not forget that Dread Zeppelin, with their lead singer Tortelvis, seemlessly bridged Elvis, Zeppelin, and reggae with their tongue in cheek, yet brilliant music....
I was sitting next to James Burton on a flight back from Copenhagen this year. I guess he was the guitarist for Elvis at the end of his career. Also a guitarist for many others. Also, a studio guitarist I guess.
He also plays with Keith on the Roy Orbison benefit (black and white ball?). I asked him about Keith, and all he had to say was good things. How Keith was always playing guitar and such.
Plus, he said he was friends with Keith and asked him to attend a benefit that he was throwing (James Burton). Keith said he could not make the benefit, but sent $25K donation. What a guy!
