OT: Not given to moaning (much) but....
Posted by: mofur ()

Don't know if this deserves a full thread on its own - if someone thinks otherwise - delete it ;-)

I gives me great pleasure to read most of the threads on this board - some are funny, some are enlightning, some are inspirational and some are a downright nuisance (spellcheck??) - but:

Why does someone has to copy the full message in a given thread just to add two - four words along the lines of "I agree" or "I do not agree"??

It takes up a lot of space, it makes the thread very unreadable and sometimes I just give up finishing the thread - which is a shame.

If you're answering to something specific in a message - delete the rest!!! If you are not answering to something specific in a message - don't copy the text.

There - I'm done whining ;-)

... okay so here's one that's absolutely not bitching - just an observation
that definitely doesn't deserve a thread of its own, so ... it goes like this:

fuzz = a] a guitar effect; b] what peaches have on their skin; and c] (in somewhat elderly slang) police.
fuss = uproar, brouhaha, arm-waving discussion and stuff like that.

two different words. end of educational interlude

fair nuff, no need to make such a fuzz about it.

Hey probably best that most folks have
remained neutral and unbiased on Beely Boy's posts....

its usually used if there a post between the one you are referring to and the one you are writing. The thread would be more disorganized without it.

Here's my gripes then - and these words are misused much more often than fuzz / fuss:

Too - can mean either in excess or also - examples of use: it was too much / that's too bad / I want some too.
To - examples of use: I went to the shops / I used to play guitar.
Two - the number 2 - examples of use: there are two glimmer twins.

Example using all three: The two of us are going to see the Stones, do you want to come too?

Their - possessive (as in they own) - examples of use: It is their choice whether to play satisfaction. It is their song.

They're - short for they are - examples of use: they're going to play satisfaction tonight. They're obviously not listening to their hardcore fans.

There - where something is - examples of use: The stones are over there on the B stage playing satisfaction.

Example sentence using all three: There they are, they're playing on their own.

I won't go in to the whole "your / you're" gripe here, I think you get the picture.

Moan over.

I guess the thing to remember is that there are many people on this board who speak English as a foreign or second language. I promise I'll never moan about it again though.

Quoting i.e. auto-copying the previous post is for lazy people. It is messing up message boards and adding up to the total bandwidth on internet. Also one of the reasons for global warming. Think smart and edit the quote so that the IMPORTANT part of what you are quoting and actually comment on is there only. Most people know how to scroll and navigate the web if they need to see the other posts.

I agree with mofur's point 100%. I also agree with sjs12's comments about homonyms......I am annoyed by their (not "there" and not "they're") frequent misuse.....here's a link for those who may need help [www.utdallas.edu]

Ditto that Luke and sjs

how about your and you're
and loose and lose

contractions, are not just labor pains, or then again
maybe they are, for some.
