Why Does Mick Pronounce Some Words So Awkward?
Posted by: ThatsWhatISay ()

Although I love this tour I must say that with each and every tour Mick comes up with new words that he pronounces totally absurd.

For instance he sings " you meek a grown man cry" on this tour and it totally ruins the song for me because it kills the enery.

Another example: "Plead to meet you, hope you get my name." WTF?

Or: "I can't gaaartto satisfaction."

Another one: "I saw her todee at the reception"

Or: "beeba" instead of baby. Argh whatever.

There are probably a dozen more examples I forgot. I just don't understand the sense of modifying these words, especially since most of them are key words of the songs and totally kill the magic. Is he out of breath?? Or just too lazy?

Actually, this is done on purpose. If you listen to the Stones, notice that
Mick jumbles the words there too. You can't understand some of them. This is an old trick from the "old black blues players" of the fify's. They purposely mumbled the words.....

Bit off the end of his tongue in a sports accident - late 50's-early 60's.

Trow (not throw) me down the key - CYHMK Live Licks, for example.

"No Anchovies, Please"

"JU got to roll me and call me DEE tumblin' dice..." (live)

"Ju got me rockin'" (live)

...and many many more. That's what makes Mick...MICK.

First of all we need to know where you picked your english up!
are you US? Texas or Boston? maybe downunder?
are you northern english?
or do you come from Mick's place of birth?

Mick picks up loads of tongues and languages, and he's enjoying it and workin on it.
He also has THE personality to exaggerate on what he's trying out - did you not
understand that beeeeeebeeey was meant to touch you?

It's not that bad that an ole' geezer can teach you new words - maybe you're not perfect yet?

its just another thing that makes him unique. There is no other persona alive that could mangle the english language with such finesse. As others have pointed out he's one in a very long tradition.

It's because he's a brit trying to sound like a black man singing the blues.....

...at least that's what my Father told me in 1964, and after all, my father is never wrong...

'Childhood livvaiiiin' 'For Yew' - it really gets up my back i can't bear to listen to him much of the time - this wasn't a problem when he was younger.

I hate much of the way he sings these days.

The one that sounds the strangest to me is "beast of bahden"

"make up your mind, 'cause I gotta go"

Is that song dedicated to Angie or Andy? The way Mick sings it, it could be either or both!

I think hearing Helen Mirren or Maggie Smith sing a few classic Stones songs would be a fascinating exercise, and perhaps would illuminate how lazy enuniciation characterizes Mick's performances.

One example I recall is the Stones' cover of Dobie Gray's "Drift Away" in which Mick sings "dwift away." In Rod Stewart's cover of the same song, he is even sloppier. Rod should be penalized for singing "I wanna get lost in your wock and woll and dwift away."

Both performances make me imagine Elmer Fudd screaming into a microphone.

I guess sometimes he pronounces some word differently because it's easier to sing to avoid voice problems. What springs to my mind is "whots passlin' yo is the neeture of ma geem" (STFD) :-)

Noticed that he know sings JU JU you make a grown man cry. Before, he used to sing YO YO you make a grown man cry. I prefer the YO. Maybe he does it to keep the songs fresh in a way? To make it more interesting to himself?

audun......as mentioned earlier, he sings JU GOT ME ROCKING and
JU got to roll me and call me DEE tumblin' dice...on recent live
recordings. Not sure why. It's fairly obvious if you listen for it.

I'll listen for it on Start Me Up.

it always reminds of the time Linda McCartney was exposed
for singing "Hey Dude" while Backing up Paul on HEY JUDE.
(late '80s or early '90s tour).

The live version from 1981 thats on Rarities should have been renamed 'Beast of Bottle'

When my ma first heard the chorus of 'Respectable' she asked me was he singing 'Crack The Bone' ......

Actually in some ways i like it, i mean, when i sing a song during the work, or when im cooking, or (horror) in the shower, i do it all the time, but, well, english is not my mother language. But i think its fun reinventing the songs this way.

I think Mick is doing part for the fun of it, part for being lazy to sing lets say SFTD for the zillion time. And probably is an kind of self joke. "lets see how much i can change a word, and nobady will notice, jejejej".

But, except for some words, i kind of like it...

For this thing keith is more, lets say, radical "i dont remmeber the song, so lets start singing "Neva gona skul momma jappy", and see what happen laters..." Jejejjeje.

Greetings.

One of the funniest things I've ever heard is Mick's Japanese on the Saitama video.

Of course, once in awhile everything he sings comes out sounding like a language spoken in some distant galaxy.

Doncha love it?

mick getting his prescription fee-yelled is the best! and beast of bottle/buudha is great- its just mick. He probably doesn't realize he does it- or maybe he's been thru so many accents he is incapable of anything else.

just fruther speculation.

Nailed in one !. ..and as Old KR added...who else could have gotten away with Mick's vocal affections down the years. Plenty of other's have tried... but most just sound plain silly. He's unique.

You know, Mick once bit off a piece of his tongue...though I'm sure this is NOT the reason why. But I think he sounds TOTALLY COOL when he does it!
