Rick Rubin urges Mick to release Red Devils project

.............come on Mick!!!.....you can do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rubin urges Jagger to release King King

By WENN world entertainment news - Friday, July 20 06:45 am Super-producer Rick Rubin is urging Mick Jagger to rethink the release of his Red Devils album - because it's one of the best projects he has worked on.

Rubin produced Jagger's supergroup in action in the early 1990s before the recording time became the Rolling Stones star's 1992 solo album Wandering Spirit.

Jagger shelved the album, dubbed King King, and it has never been released.

And now Rubin thinks the rocker should reconsider.

He says, "It's incredible, (but) it's up to Mick. He's the artist... he gets to do what he wants to do. But it's great, and I hope it comes out."

Rubin admits recording the King King album wasn't all fun - Jagger yelled at the producer for being downbeat.

He tells Flaunt magazine, "He got really angry at me for bringing the session down. He pulled me out in the hallway and yelled at me because I was not being upbeat about what was going on.

"He said I was worse than Keith, and if I didn't like what was going on, I should just go out and get a veggie burger."

King King, named after the New York studio where the album, was recorded, features the talents of Lester Butler, Bill Bateman and brothers Dave Lee and Johnny Ray Bartel

they got some facts wrong here - the Red Devils DID release an album called King King, and it was named after the LA club where the live album was recorded. makes me think the whole story may be bogus. not a big fan of the work MJ did with these guys anyway, frankly....

.....The Red Devils King/King was released around April 1999............years after Mick's project so I don't think it's the same.......... Perhaps there's a greater connection...........does someone know for sure??........but more interesting considering Rubins success with Mick's Wandering Spirit is why did Mick bury the project??? Doesn't sound like Mick would pass on the opportunity to release something that might give him critical acclaim away from the Stones.........and finally considering Rubins track record, I'd like the opportunity to hear the project myself thanks!

I have a boot CD of Jag with the Red Devil and it kicks ass... has 2 or 3 versions of each song... can't remember the title but EVIL's on there 3 times I think, some of Mick's best solo work IMHO.... Put the thing out, will be better than PRIMITIVE COOL, that's for sure.....

haha - well, i think WS is a classic, so I wouldn't go that far....

although it was nice to hear MJ delve deeply back into his blues bag, i just didn't think he added that much to the Red Devils sound - in fact their resident singer/harp player was damned good (forget the name - i know he died a few years back). Jagger himself was quoted at one point saying he had fun but didn't think the final product was up to snuff or something. I agree...

odd that he would show that restraint, yet at other times put out albums like Primitive Cool and Goddess?

Exactly. The songs are good, but the boot suffers from to much "bootleg noise".

My copy has the release date as 1992 and the Jagger boot I have is circa 93/94 I bought it at Ashton Under Lyne market, just outside Manchester,
the guy also had lots of Oasis boots who were huge at the time

The name of the boot cd is "The Nature Of My Game". The cover has a pic of Mick on it with the title on the spine, back cover and cd itself. The fold out insert states "A Collection Of Fiery Blues Covers Recorded Live In The Studio". There is no song listings. No indication of who the artist is. There is alot of tape hiss as others have stated. If anyone has a song listing, that would be greatly appreciated.

I am all for any artist's expression of the blues.

I was never, ever, ever, never ever a Journey fan, but when I heard Steve Perry sing the blues, I was impressed...and I can't believe I am admitting this.

stuff like Jamming with Edward was released eventually. So why not the red devils or other recording ? (it is not clear to me if there is one more recording than "blues with a feeling" boot).
I understand Mick wanting to keep a high level quality about the released records.
But maybe this one deserves a new hearing by Mick..

and about his next "best of" I think there is an obligation to put on the record : what kind of world is this (great satriani and Ripp guitars part), Stomp, his Memory motel version on piano (listen again the TSP record with Mick solo's) and the outtakes of WS that surfaced a couple of years ago.

I love King King, and I love Lester Butler's solo album '13', but I have always thought Jagger's work with the Red Devils was kind of lame, it never really hit off.

By the way, an old friend of mine once talked with Lester Butler, and he showed Butler the bootleg of the session with Jagger. He was really surprised there was a bootleg as Jagger had taken the original tapes under his arm when he left the studio.

Not so odd when you consider he wrote those songs; of course they mean more to him than some blues covers.

Toru A- where did you find this track listing for Mick's cd. If Too Many Cooks actually is on it, I am psyched.

I had this on a cassette - poor quality recording, but the music was good. Hope this sees the light of day.

If Toru A's tracklist is correct; it makes a lot more sense than the horrible one we got last month. Only one song that begs for the 'skip' button: Joy
Must be very problematic to release Too Many Cooks though;
Mick would have to pay Yoko Ono - I'd think
