Was wondering what people here thought about Peter Tosh and his music. I have been a reggae fan for a while but just recently picked up some live Tosh cds I didn't have and was blown away. His studio stuff seems almost weak in comparison. I think it may have to do with poor production. Live his music has a very strong rock influence to it and the music really comes alive. The Dvd Captured Live is a great concert as well. His guitarist (can't think of his name at the moment) has some very Keithish sounding licks when he solos.

Would love to hear opinions on Tosh, I think he is brilliant and overshadowed by Bob Marley's success.

Also love to hear any good Tosh stories if anyone has any.

Saw Tosh twice in 78. He and his band were very good. He lit up a joint that must have been about a meter long.

Like his music too. Especially the One Love Peace Festival live record.

Stories? I think he had clash with Keith sometime in the Eighties. It was something about Peter had been living at Keith's house in Jamaica and then decided he wouldn't leave it again.

I like PT music. Especially "Hot, hot, hot", "Reggaemylitis" and "Magga Dog". He also does a reggae version of Johnny B Goode.

I also agree. I'd even say every reggae artist is been overshadowed by Marley. At least in my part of the World it seems to be so.

I think reggae is an totally overshadowed musc by bob marley and jamaica style of living. It´s not taken serious, it´s always this joint stuff

Hi ..... ok...uhmm I like Tosh...he was in Holland in 79...Jagger was backstage...drunk (have some footage) he didnt want to spoil peters set so he didnt come on stage(ahhhh!!!@)..the saturday night life video with Jag is great!...he wasnt a real good person i think....i found it cool that The Stones promoted him when Jamaican music wasnt popular in the USA....and Jagger on stage before showtime.....Singing smokeys ''Dont look Back'' with him...still play ''Bush Doctor''Bush??

Genius artist, I saw him in Toronto in 1981, the revolving stage at Ontario Place, what a gig, amazing.
The reason why he was so good live, might have something to do with the greatest rhythm section ever in music, Robbie Shakespear and Sly Dunbar, who toured with him for many years. Also the studio albums are overproduced, try to check out some of his earlier Jamaican releases. His contribtion to the early Wailers music should also not be underestimated, many of the great Wailers song were written while Tosh was still in the band,even if they were released on albums released many years after he left.Not to take anything away from Bob, but Peter Tosh is a musical giant too.

Two of the best albums by any reaggaeartist is Marleys Babylon By Bus, together with Tosh´s Bush Doctor. Mick on Don´t Look Back and Keith on Bush Doctor and Stand Firm. The bass on Babylon By Bus is annoying the shit out of my neighbours!

Could not agree more about the early Jamaican albums of Bob Marley and the Wailers. I just got Soul Revolutionaries: The Early Jamaican Albums 1970-1971. It is so good, real rootsy reggae without that slick production that Marley had in his later years. And some of the best work Tosh did with the Wailers.

But I also like that slick production. Donnhave to choose!

The reason the Soul Revolutionaries caught my attention so much is cause of Lee Perry's contribution. And many Bob Marley compilations that came out later were newer, different versions of these songs.

Tosh: Live and Dangerous in Boston is also a great album to check out.

One of the greatest---- his first two solo albums away from the Wailers, "Legalize It" and "Equal Rights" were and are amazing--would love to see someone write a good book on his life--

I've got his "Legalize It" CD and a greatest hits CD......perhaps my favorite Saturday Night Live musical guest was Peter Tosh, and of course his guest Mick....I remember watching it live......great show...

Was this at Pinkpop? I always thought the story was that Jagger was annoyed by some over enthousiastic reporter and decided to leave.

Peter Tosh is my all my all time favourite musicians! One of the best shows I ever saw...I agree, hearing him on studio and live is night and day.
