Hi all.
25 hours after the lovely show in Donostia-San Sebastian.
Great sound, about 30.000 -35.000 people, several sitting places not fulled but completely packed standing pitch and even the top of the roof of the seventieen floor high skyscraper placed just in front of the venue. I think when they fineshed the last song and right before the final bows, that Ronnie was laughing while pointing the people on the building to everybody on the stage.
Grey, covered sky all the evening but no rain at all. Nice temperature, but really hot all along the show. Gates were opened at 18:20 hours, not at 17:30 as it was said. First warm up started at 19:30, Zenttric, a group from Bilbao, doing a pop-rock set for thirty minutes sharp. At 20:30 it was time for Arno Carstens who played his rock and roll for 45 minutes, good performance but not got the connection whit the audience.
Finally, at 22:17, after several oe-oe-oe-oe from the crowd, lights went off, a huge explosion, video started on the big screen. Start me up, with Keith doing a powerful riff fired the crowd right to the end of the show. Ronnie, in a great shape all along the show, reached the top in C´ant you hear me knocking, one of the higligths of the night. Charlie, as sharp and solid as ever, time is on his side, definitely. And Mick…, well, if you have the greatest r&r band ever, you should have the greatest frontman ever, this is, Mick Jagger.
The second one, Let´s spend the night together is another song very loved by the people. They know it well and people don´t stop dancing and sing this one. First words of Mick in basque, I really hope that: “Gabon, Donostia, zer moduz?” (Good evening, San Sebastian, How are you?). Later he said some words in Spanish, again in basque “mila esker” (thank you very much) and welcomed people from Bilbao and France.
Rough justice, the only song from A Bigger Bang sounded well and so did one of the other highlight, All down the line, lovely to hear that song. The band was really rocking and, I got surprised when Keith went on the well known riff of You Got Me Rocking. I could see Keith very concentrated on this song, like in a kind of exam, will it be a good show today? For me he had a hard job to do but he was regaining confidence and getting better. He looked for the feedback with Bobby Keys and felt more relaxed.
Again another gem, Keith took the acoustic, lights went down and for a few seconds everybody was in a big expectation and a classical funny situation happened, Mick ready to start the song, has a look to Chuck and Ronnie is just in the middle and Mick can´t see Chuck; Mick waves his hand and finally Ronnie notices it, and bends down, here you are, Ruby Tuesday, first time in this 2007 Bigger Bang European Leg Tour. Keith did the chorus.
Can´t you Hear me Knocking, as I wrote before got the everybody loved Bobby and Ronnie on this song. Of course, Mick´s harp made the song even greater. During the guitar solo, Keith placed between Blondie (playing his acoustic) and Bernard (playing key boards) while Ronnie took the front side of the stage and tried to do his best, and he really got it, for the pleasure of everybody. Totally highlight. Later Mick announced next song as a king of paying respect for James Brown, I´ll go crazy and after Lisa´s part of the song, the stadium broke in a good ovation for her. Tumbling dice, as nice as always.
Then band introductions came and when Mick introduced Keith, a long oe-oe-oe-oe from the people, Ronnie started jumping and leading the crowd and Keith was even impossible to speak. I think he really thanked this moment. The Keith´s set was You Got the Silver, with no guitar, the last pirate took the centre of the stage and sung and danced in his particular way around Ronnie, while the late played his acoustic. I think it was a magical moment. Then, I Just Wanna Hold You, very celebrated for everybody in the house.
They moved to the B-stage doing IORR, Keith and Ronnie on Ronnie´s side this time, and as I was on the other side, could see Mick and Darryl very close to me. It´s All Over Now was the next one and Satisfaction, where the introducaion riff played by Keith could sound something like bitch. Well, from my point of view, sound on the B-stage is not the best one. Of course, the crowd went mad. Back to the main stage, with Honky Town Woman, what a feeling, Keith very concentrated on his playing, just two meters from me. At the end of the solo, he smiled.
The final rush, as always, but I noticed this was not the best rendition ever of Sympathy. The stadium in fully red, Mick starring and Keith went to the very far side of the stage but as he was running it was the moment for his guitar part. Anyway, he finally did it.
Paint it Black was the next one; for me, the first time live, I was looking forward to it. Just before they played Brown Sugar, another pyro explosion and everybody enjoying, I say yeah, yeah, yeah, wooooooh! JJFlash finished in a powerful way the great night. I can´t forget when Mick went downstairs and from the beginning to the end of the catwalk he goes and gets back in a crazy sprint just like only Jumpin´Jack can do it. Some folks say, did you say nearly 64? No, man, you must be wrong!
Last chord, bows, pyros and oe-oe-oe-oe from the crowd again. I just could see on everybody ´s face nothing but happy smiles, from those who see the boys for the first time, i.e. Ol from Guadalajara or people from A Coruña and Valladolid, to those old fans as Rafa from Malaga.
Thank you, Stones, for all the stuff. I know, it´s only r&r, but I loved it.
