Dead on.

I dunno what it is about Mick...are these just habits--them playing these warhorses endlessly? Are they afraid? Are they lacking confidence? Are they lazy? Do they actually PREFER playing these warhorses night in and night out? Old Habits Die Hard, as they say...

Thanks for the hint, barking paul!
Seems to me as if Ronnie's the reliabe guy on that show... Keith does play some rythm at the beginning but then falls back to play uninspired licks from time to time...

I've just watched the CYHMK clip on youtube.

Am I the only one who thinks Ronnie's solo is rubbish?

He even screws his face up with his first, single, elongated "twang" that any tuneless goon could play.

If there is ANY merit in the sound of his solo it is totally dependent on sound distortion effects and NOT on any fingering technique.

RW solo on CYHMK is real bad not fluid and he has no clue what to play.

Why even play the song live - Keith's rhythm is terrible and vocals are flat.

play that guitar boy

It might help

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to explain in 100 words or less how the song "Rocks Off" is a 'sort of warhorse'.....

Duh - like 100 times during vl; like 50 times during licks; intermittently thereafter. Which makes it, ta da, a "Sort of War Horse"

get it?? I am here to help you

hark! yet another reason to change the name of the board to Brain of a Dinosaur -
then we'd get Jiving Sister Fanny instead of IORR. how cool would that be? :E

87/134 on a tour that ended 12 years ago and which marked the first time it had been played in 20 years. (it was played a couple of times at most in '75)

like 50 times
> during licks;

33 out of 117.

Nice omission of BTB/No security there - 0 out of 152 to be precise

Lets recap - 120 performances in 403 shows from 1994-2003 and about 122 in about 750 shows between 1973 and 2003. Yep, theyve really played it to death.

> intermittently thereafter.

Warhorses arent played "intermittently" - theyre played nearly all the time. Like Honky Tonk women or Start Me Up, for example

Which
> makes it, ta da, a "Sort of War Horse"

a warhorse? A non-single from what is actually one of the bands weakest selling albums (albeit their greatest one) and which they hardly ever play? if you say so.

> get it?? I am here to help you

You need to help yourself first, but thanks anyway. Mission failed unfortunately

Duh, that why it is in the "Sort of" category. Not to worry, after this tour it will graduate to official "WAR HORSE". Which will make you happy, one presumes.

PLEASE tell me you get it now. (I am here to help!)

oh so its worthy of criticism because it may at some point be a FUTURE warhorse?

well, why didnt you say so to begin with? It ALL makes perfect sense now .. smiling smiley

"SORT OF"
SORT OF
sort of
SORT of

Try READING it correctly..read SLOWLY.

Werchter was my 52nd show in 34 years and my third "premiere" after Washington in 94 and Chicago in 97.
Van Morrisson was good but his behaviour with the audience near to Zero : no word, no thanks, no insult, nothing.

- Start me up to open the show, what else?
- Shattered follows with Mick quite nervous thinking he losts something but the bridge sounds good and the end stays clean
- Rough justice with Keith taking Ron's solo, i can read on Jagger's lips "why?", Ronnie seems amused
- Rock's off well done with a great bridge but the end is more difficult.
In fact all through the night, many songs will be difficult to end. I guess they rehearse but forgot to finish a song properly (see Under my thumb in the past).
- Heartbreaker : nothing special except i regret the 73 and 75 versions
- Some girls : Mick on guitar knows his 2 chords A then D but never knows when to play the Am-E part, he looks around, tries to communicate with Chuck in vain. The lyrics are "upside down".I bet this one will disappear very soon
- Waiting on a friend : great moment, i saw the first version in Milwaukee but this one sounds a lot better.
- Can't you hear me knocking : Keith is very long to begin trying to lit a cigarette then the pace is nearer to the genuine version. The jam part sounds very well and Ronnie is OK. Charlie keeps his smile on the jazz tempo.
- Tumblin' dice : very long version with Keith focused on the ad-lib, showing to Mick something like "i'm the boss here and the song will stop when i'll decide it"
As Keith seeming more and more "high", i presume the 2nd part of the show will be funny and i'm not wrong.
- I'll go crazy : not far from perfect, i almost forget Night time
- intro : usual until Charlie waves shyly to the public
- Wanna hold you : Keith is really in a good mood, "the guy are nervous, not me, you are cool and i am cool"
He's cool but the song sounds far from rehearsed
- Slippin' away : 3rd "warhorse" of the evening but very well played i must admit.
- IORR : this songs rocks while the stage slides, a mid tempo was better at that moment
- It's all over now : as i'm far from the B stage, i just close my eyes and listen to the music. The song is nearer to the genuine version (vs 1995 version) until the end which could be better
- Satisfaction : at the beginning, i think the verion will be short and rocky but after a while something goes wrong (apparently due to Keith??)
- Honky tonk women : usual, better tempo to slide
- Paint it black : very long wait before the intro but good one
- Jumpin' Jack flash and Brown sugar : Keith doesn't want to finish the songs and goes on the right then on the left posing a lot while Ron and the others try to play - very funny - i remember one moment when Mick "punches" Keith in the air but thinking deeply he would like to hit him while smiling by the way.
- Sympathy : without horns, what a relief
- End with fireworks, Mick and Keith almost kiss eachother then Keith stays a long time on the stage, strange.
Aftermath : i've done 1400 kms to see that show and i don't regret it
High points : fine weather, excellent sound, terrific set-list, mistakes, the way how Mick was nice with Keith
Bad point : mistakes (may be too many)
Last word : i'm afraid Keith knows for sure he will never come back in places like Werchter and wants to profit each precious moment to the point he doesn't want to stop the pleasure to be on stage.

I don't mean this as a personal attack on Four Stone Walls, and I'm not defending the performance (I haven't seen or heard it), but why do we keep evaluating music based on how difficult it is to play?

That's NOT the test.

As much as I hate to say it, but Keiths playing on this song is terrible to say the least. Must be something of the worst I heard him play ever. Hope he gets in to shape soon.
