I've only looked at this briefly but Sway, Rocks Off and Hey Negrita are not played in open G but in standard tuning. At least I;ve never known them to be played in open G.

whoa star star! that's a lot of list-work huh??
heh heh; now i need to know what fret the capo (if used) is on in each of these...yiiikeess...lol
aside from the 3 chrism mentions, any of those incorrectly attributed to open G?
also, if anyone knows...did they ever record a song in any other open tuning?
like the similar slightly darker 'open D' for example?

Chris,

Sway is actually, in the Bigger Bang tour, played in open G. keith's guitar is the one he used back in 75-76 tour.
Original Rocks off is played in open G. Four flicks version is in standard.
Hey negrita: keith plays in open G. Same 5 string guitar.

Your list did not make the distnction as to which versions of these songs were played in open G. The original studio cuts are in standard tuning, especially the original version of Rocks Off. The low E string is very much in evidence. However feel free to play them any way you wish!

Right faraway eyes, ROCKS OFF original is played: DBGDGE. Not a sctrictly Open G.

yep - they've used open D and open E as well, at least in the studio.

If you only look at studio versions from you list, all are open G except:

Street Fighting Man open D
Stray Cat Blues open D
Country Honk standard
You got The Silver open D or E (I think open D with capo on third fret)
You Can't Always Get What You Want open E
Jumping Jack Flash open E
Rocks Off standard tuning
Hide Your Love standard tuning
Fingerprint File standard tuning
Where The Boys Go standard
Down In The Hole standard
Tie You Up standard
Don't Stop Mick standard, Keith in open G

"Sway" studio is in standard? How is the C-Csus part of the riff played in standard tuning?

What about SFM live?I think it's open G but just where does the first chord lie?Is it the sixth fret?Where does the capo sit?I regularly study their tracks.I always give in to TAB books and internet TAB as I have no ear what so ever for music.

Focusing on the studio version only, I believe Mick's part does indeed use open G tuning, but perhaps Mick Taylor plays in standard?

I haven't listened to the song/played along on guitar for years though.

it's my understanding, tho i could be wrong, and am primitive and self taught and not a very knowledgeable musician...that taylor almost always, if not always, plays in standard...more of a pallette for his considerable painting skills?
whereas the open tunings...while totally spectacular and full of rich harmonics and overtones and undertones, for riffs and rhythms...seems, at least to me, to be kind of tough to work out minor pentatonics or other familiar 'scale' patterns from which lead guitarists usually assemble their parts...

You're right, although Keith plays the solo on Honky Tonk Woman in open G tuning. It's not impossible to play lead in open G tuning, it's just not so easy if you haven't practiced the scales in open G....

How do you get the dark tone in F# in the opening riff with openG? Rocks Off is clearly played in standard tuning.
