Real intelligent. I'm not getting into this again because this thread has run on long enough. Some of your people amaze me with your ignorance.

Dear Doctor, the irony of your prejudiced comments about southern 'rednecks' is amusing. Even though I'm Canadian, I think they get the short end of the stick - free game for knocks. Neil Young's song are an example of this broad-brushing - but since he's a 'liberal' - it's okay?

All I have to say is thank God for southerners, otherwise we wouldn't have...

I've only read this thread starting with page six, but here's my two cents. Some nice memories and insights from Lukester and Elmo and others, by the way.

I grew up in and still live in the south, in Louisville, Kentucky. Although, if I lived about 3 more miles to the north I'd be in Indiana and would be considered a midwesterner, a much more politically correct thing to be. Which is weird on several levels.

Anyway, I've never been that crazy about the south even though I've lived here most of my life. I cannot stand rednecks. I guess it just depends on how you define the word "redneck." If you define it as a good natured good old boy who likes hunting, fishing and getting a nice buzz on, then ok, I think rednecks are cool.

But I define redneck as "violent backwoods racist/sexist dickhead who doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground." I guess those are the "bad rednecks" but that's what I always think of when the word redneck comes to mind. I grew up around too many of those rednecks and can't stand them.

Because of this, I've always loathed any sort of "the south is great, the south is going to rise again" attitude. But I hadn't stoped to think that great guys like Lukester and Elmo, who are as anti-"bad redneck" as they come, could interpret it differently, as an expression of pride in one's roots. Which is very cool. I'll have to stop equating "southern pride" with "let's re-establish the confederacy and hang us some (expletive deleted)." As usual the world is not all black and white.

As for Skynyrd ... because of my anti-southern ethos attitude, hearing them singing about southern pride always struck me as sort of moronic (a view which I'm now modifying, as I said). But I have to admit they have some great rock songs and some truly fantastic guitar work.

I've got the '70s incarnation's studio albums and a greatest hits, and I've even seen them twice. I think they have played near me appox. 5,000 times since reuniting in 1991; they are inescapable in the south. Our faucets are marked hot, cold, and Freebird.

I saw them on their initial reunion tour and once a few years ago when I was walking around at a free festival on the riverfront. My friend said "that band does a pretty good Lynyrd Skynyrd cover"; I looked up at the stage and said "according to the banner that IS Lynyrd Skynyrd." I had to stop and yell for Freebird. I just couldn't break my genetic programing on that one.

Lukester.
ECU is right.
We were both freshmen in '78 and were on the 4th floor of Aycock Dorm, which was the top floor.
Top of the cock - as it was called.
Mark was very cool and we hung out quite a bit drinking beer and listening to music constantly.
We may have even gone to see Sea Level (Chuck Leavell...) together, or the Dixie Dregs etc at The Attic.
I grew up in Jersey but moved to Greensboro in the middle of the Stones '75 Tour, which allowed me to see both the'75 MSG and '75 Greensboro shows that summer.
Saw all the top acts of the mid to late 70's in Greensboro - Zep, the Who, etc. Hell, my dad even made me take my sister to see Elvis because she was too young to drive. I didn't want to go then but am glad i did now.
I'll get Mark's book asap.

I suppose I've never understood the name calling aspect of anti-southern people. The entire "if the shoe fits wear it" routine reminds me of racist comments from white people 40 years ago concerning the "good blacks." You know the attitude....Now I like blacks - its just those (N-Word) I can't stand. The name calling is baffling. If someone attempted to make such a statement about gays, blacks or women....they'd be run off this board. Why is it okay to be narrow minded and bigoted when it comes to southern people?

Shawn20 You said it!

I'm sure YOU can understand how much bias there was in LA and NY at first re Skynyrd. I rmember showing some New Yorkers around Atlanta, taking them to the studio to meet Skynyrd etc. They just couldn't get over that that the South was a beautiful region, and that they were SAFE.

A bit of this may have been due to that nutty Lester Maddox, the racist governor of Georgia at one time.

Here's a nugget. One of Skynyrd's first fans who attended their record debut party in Atlanta in 1973 was...is Julian Bond.

right on nellcote....I'm sure you would enjoy the book....

I bet you and I have crossed paths at the Greensboro Coliseum.....like The Who in 1975 and 1980, Led Zeppelin in 1977,Bob Dylan in 1978, Grateful Dead, Yes, CSN, Doobie Brothers, The Cars, etc......hey, you weren't one of those guys that kept pinching my girlfriend's butt at a Dead show were you?

No problem. I'm filling in my Stones-obession void with something more apt to the season - hot women with nice boobs. For some reason, I'm stuck on this one...

Yes Rickey Medlocke sang lead vocals on "Seasons" as well as a couple of other tunes during those 1971 Muscle Shoals sessions. Medlocke played drums for Lynyrd Skynyrd in the early '70's for a period before they ever "made it". He rejoined the band in the mid-'90's as a guitarist, playing Allen Collins' signature parts on the 70's material. Medlocke is still with Skynyrd today.

Medlocke was the drummer then, guitarist now. Also, sang "White Dove", I think. His grandpa (that raised him),Shorty Medlocke, was the inspiration for "Curtis Loew".

I didn't know Ricky Medlocke used to be a drummer. I remember Blackfoot. Wasn't their big hit Highway Song? Is the other guitarist Skynyrd has still Hughie Thomasson, from The Outlaws?

As for Jaimie Pressley. I saw an awful lot of her the other night on Cinemax(skinemax) in some old soft porn movie. Let's just say there was some "Down South Jukin" goin on. winking smiley

Yeah, the current line-up has Hughie, Ricky, and Gary.

Blackfoot = "Highway Song" and "Train, Train" as their biggest hits.

The last time I saw the band play on tv (I forget what the program was) Hughie was not with them. I don't know if he left or got fired but he's not in the band anymore. Check out their official website and you'll see that he's not there. I dunno what happened. I never heard any official announcement or anything.

Sorry I can't tell you more about it but I don't know any more about it myself. I know when I saw them without Hughie, I went to the official site and searched online for articles concerning his departure, and I found absolutely nothing. Maybe there's something out there now, but at the time I couldn't find anything.

Yeah they're already adverstising a couple shows out here in the west this summer. A southern jam themed show w/Marshall Tucker/Charlie Daniels Band/The Outlaws. Maybe Hughie went back to The Outlaws.

Elmo,

Yeah Hughie re-joined the Outlaws a while back. Did you ever listen to that Tucker show on Wolfgangs vault? haven't noticed your response if you send one,
I'll try to look at this thread in a while. Speaking of the Outlaws, there is
another webpage and has alot of boots that you can download on weekends. They have a Outlaws show (original lineup from 1975) Denver - SMOKIN!!!!!

E-Mail me and I'll send you the link

As I understand it, since I'm from the south I'm allowed to make fun of southern people. At least the offensive ones. Or maybe I'm misunderstanding the concept - after all, I was raised amongst a bunch of dumb, ignorant rednecks. smiling smiley
