Millard Masters: L.A. Forum 1975 questions!
Posted by: mrrockandroll ()

While organizing my whole Stones mp3 collection again, I discovered something of which I didn't know I had downloaded it anymore: the box MILLARD MASTERS (six discs), which contains all three the L.A. Forum Shows from July 1975 (July 11,12,13). Which show was the one broadcasted profesionally? And which songs where broadcasted and which weren't? I find it very hard to say what's an audience recording and what is a soundboard; because they both have the same quality on this disc. Can somebody help me out?

None of the shows were broadcast, but theres a pro shot film of the 11th July show.

Incidentally, they played 5 shows at the Forum that week - not three. July 9 & 10 too.

They're all audience quality on that box. July 11th is soudboard elsewhere.

initially I thought the July 13th show was the one from the broadcast; this show sounds very good in comparison with the July 11th & 12th discs from the boxset. But I guess I'm wrong???

This info comes from a poster from the Guitars101 forum:

The fan recording of a concert is really an extension of taking snapshots of your heroes. Back in the ‘60s and ‘70s recordable media was just making its way into households as a consumer electronic device, either an expensive reel-to-reel deck or a convenient cassette recording deck. Just imagine sneaking one of those into a concert these days. More likely, the stealth recorder of choice today would be a mini-disc recorder or your handphone. Small enough to fit your pocket.
But Michael Millard was different. He arrived early at concerts near his home, pulled out a wheelchair from the boot of his car and proceeded to wheel himself into the arena as an invalid. He managed to secure front row "seats", almost always front and centre. Hidden underneath his wheelchair was a Nakamichi stereo cassette deck hooked up to two high-quality AKG mics. Security guards in those days were probably unaware of such goings on.
His recordings were much sought after for their quality - capturing the expanse of the stage plus the great ambience of the halls. His close proximity eliminated any echo from his recordings. All the instruments recorded right off the front speakers. Plant’s voice is crystal clear. But Millard had a habit of marking his tapes when he copied them for another collector or fan. He would, for instance, lower the levels when transferring the audio to a VHS tape or lower the volume in mid-song when making a cassette copy. It has been said he detested bootleggers who pressed up his recordings onto vinyls or CDs to sell. To that end, he kept a log of all the trades he made with clear indications of what markings he did to the tapes. That way, he knew which of his trades were sent to bootleggers.
He worked as a custodian in a public school. In a fit of depression, he committed suicide in 1990. His friends say he destroyed all copies of his Led Zeppelin recordings. What has survived are the first generation copies he made and shared freely with other Zep fans. These are what are now being traded back and forth.
Millard was active from 1974 to the ‘80s and was said to have taped shows by Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Yes, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Jethro Tull and even Kansas. To date, we have never found a copy of his Who or Tull recordings. The non-Zeppelin masters are known to be in possession of Millard’s family. Hopefully, someday they will be shared again.

Is there any way you can and want to share the film footage you have from these shows?

Yes; as I've seen some covers of this bootlegs which mention it was a pro-shot, I assumed it had been broadcasted somewhere. Why would they film it professionally then??

They film and record things simply to fill up empty shelves in their vaults.
There's lotsa Stones footage that'll never see the light of day.

For broadcast purposes, I suppose. I guess it just wasnt used. Same with the Fort Worth '78 footage which is an incomplete recording of an unreleased concert movie

Nowadays there could theoretically be a pro shot of every major show of course, as theyre filmed by the crew for the big screens

Yes, I agree with Gazza, as I know that Soundboard pro shot vids exist for EVERY 1981 and 82 show, so it makes sense that everything else exists, too.

I've read somewhere that Empire Pool 73 was filmed, but I can't remember where.
Now, that would be...really something if it was leaked.

the Stones aren't the ones who filmed the LA Forum show, though, right?
wasn't it some film school people or something?
the Stones gave them permission, obviously, but it wasn't their initiative (or their film).

yes Eric - correct.
I have a gut feeling (and it's probably wishfull) that Empire Pool '73 will be RELEASED by the Stones when they finally give up touring and open the vaults !

The July 11 show was definitely not filmed by the band for release. The pro shot is actually taken from the arena video feed (just like the Seattle´81 pro shot).

I know they had a screen at some of the 81/82 shows, but didn't know about 75.
How many shows did they use such a screen in 75? And how about 76 and 78 ?
Unless you mean a different kind of arena video feed than I was thinking about...

i've been trying to track down where i read that the Forum footage wasn't a Stones undertaking,
nor does it belong to them, but i haven't located it yet. i don't think i dreamed it ...

Yes, that´s what I meant. The show was filmed for the screens inside the venue and someone just happened to record the feed. I don´t know at how many shows this was done in ´75, it certainly wasn´t the standard at every show as it is now.

OK thanks, I didn't know they had the equipment for that.
I've seen pictures of a screen in 75, but I thought it was one of those "sport-events-screens" that only showed letters with game-results and such.
Well, it's too bad they recorded the July 11th show, instead the other nights in LA, as the other nights were much better.

I would answer you but it looks like everybody else has already taken care of it. They film and record everything man. Very little of it is broadcast. I suppose that's probably a reasonable assumption though....that they would film it for a broadcast or something.
