I absolutely LOVE Keith's use of double stops in intros.

If I am not wrong Star Star is the first stones r'n'r original with a pure vintage chuck berry double stop intro.

R'n'r double stops are used also to open the studio versions of IORR (a small masterpiece) and Neighbours, but in a more personalized way.

With the She was hot intro Keith goes back to the basics again, but with that tricky sounding bi-chord (d-f# - or G flat - can't remember my lessons well) that gives a minor feel which is then developed in the melody of the chorus.

Live, as we all know, many tracks have been "berry-ized", starting from IORR.

My personal favourite will always remain that huge groovy mess that is the star star intro at the "Blind date".

A double stop is a description of playing two strings at the same time. Chuck uses it a lot in his intro's. It sounds a lot more powerful than playing those notes on single strings.

I never thought a double stop was playing two strings at the same time........you could play a double stop on one string if you wanted...but as far as describing how its' done, I don't have the words.

I could show somebody easier.....but maybe I'm wrong.....I dunno.

I thought it was called a double stop because of the pause or the stop..two of them..I thought that's what the "double" came from.........but I might be wrong.

So, where does the "stop" come from? I always thought a double stop was more of a musical or rhythmic procedure.....accoding to wikipedia, its' just hitting two strings at the same time...so I guess they would know.

To quote the same wiki article:

In performing a double stop, two separate strings are depressed (stopped) by the fingers, and bowed or plucked simultaneously.

yeah I read that but it still doesn't make sense to me.....I always thought the stop was referring to when the sustain of the notes were stopped..but apparently that's not the case.....ya learn something every day.

Playing "double stops," means playing on two strings at once. You can
find Double Stops in Blues and Rock´n Roll, from the Stones to Heavy
Metal are the possibilities for this simple technique.
But there are triple stops (three strings) and quadruple stops
(four strings) as well.

For a Double Stop you hold two strings with one finger or you use ring
finger and pinky.

Recommended songs: Chuck Berry used Double Stops in nearly every song!
See "Johnny Be Goode", "Roll over Beethoven" and many others!

and once you've nailed the Rock N Roll double stops...you can move onto the country flavoured opposed bends ;^)

I thought the term came from fiddle players and now has been transposed to guitar too. In fiddle music, the majority of the work is done on one string at a time. (You don't often hear fiddles play chords!) So a double stop is something a bit special in the contect of a fiddle.
