Interesting that Holly Hunter, the US actress, owns the rights to the story. Never pictured her as a Lizzy fan.

Finally some good news.
My only hope is that it won´t be as bad as Stoned.
I met Phil a couple of times, have some great stories to tell sometime.

Anyone else with more updated news on this (?) -
it seems to have stuck somewhere? Finances?
Gazza - you're on Phil's island - what do you know here?

Swedish site with more encounters with Phil [www.labyrint.nu]

Reckon I wanna lure out some more (ya gave me "A" last time, Ville)
details from Mr Mickijaggeroo next time we meet...

In exactly one week 21 years have passed since Phil sailed away.

Just listened to Jailbreak a day or two ago - "Romeo and The Lonely Girl", "Running Back", "Cowboy Song" - good stuff.

saw Thin Lizzy on VH1 Classic last night. Was about 50 min. from a Jan '83 broadcast on BBC. Played some old ones and several new ones I guess off their last record. Gorham and John Sykes were on guitar. I see that this was also released as a record with a few more songs then were on the show I saw. I had seen them a few times with in the 70s and it was great each time with different guitar pairings. In '83 they were still playing well and Phil looked pretty healthy and sober to me. Catch this replay if you can.

Start with Bad reputation, Jailbreak and Johnny The Fox. Don´t miss out on Live And Dangerous, and don´t forget their best, Black Rose - Roisin Dubh!
Chinatown is good, Renegade I consider a failure. Thunder And Lightning, their last, goes in a much more heavy metal tradition, altough Lizzy style. Get it on vinyl, and make sure you get the bonus live disc.
About my Phil stories, one day I´ll tell....smiling smiley Maybe IORR is not the right forum for this.

Renegade a failure! VIlle, you must have been
puttin to little Renat in yer drink...

Johnny The Fox is good but suffers from lack of strong song material.
Live And Dangerous represents exclusively the hip & heavy metal Lizzy,
not so much of the poetic, melodic sides of Lynott

Thunder & Lightning is worse than a failure imho, I dont even
count it as a Lizzy... The production had by then, imho,
gone out off Lynotts hands completely, he was losin' it...
M y Lizzy is the soft and Ahead-of-its-time-attitude they show up
on Nightlife, proto-hip-hop and dead-cool slack & sleazy wah-wah
soulish ballading and rock songs in the Shaft-style.
Its also the moody & melancholic part of Fighting and
the achingly beautiful ballads there Wild One & Freedom Song.
When The Spirit Slips Away is the best bellad I ever heard about losin
it or leavin this earth.

Renegade is a strong album if you ask me, hardcore Lizzy-fan since 1976.
Angel of Death*, Renegade*, Leave this Town, Hollywood (Down on your Luck) *
No One Told Him*, Fats, Mexican Blood*, It's Getting Dangerous
are all high-standard songs (*extremely strong imho); only one
weak number there: The Pressure Will Blow.

The individual songs on Renegade are so different to each other, so they don´t form a "album" as such, more a collection of outtakes or something. And Lizzy was in deep trouble with this one, creatively speaking. I admit there are good songs on there, but take Fats or Mexican Blood, they for example, don´t fit, altough enjoyable. The concert was good though, and the aftermath....smiling smiley

Nightlife and Fighting are good, but shows a band in transition, searching for a identity. A band heading for a future of Bad Reputation, Jailbreak and Johnny The Fox. The earlier albums are really "out" there, and shows a band with no direction, as the material on those clearly shows.

Well, I certainly dont see their development the same way you do.
And I love bands in transition.
If I want a band with a certain, cemented idenity I go buy a Toto-album.

"No direction" on Shades of a blue orphanage... Well, well...

Fit or dont fit... How does I Just Want to See His Face fit on Exile?
Mexican Blood fit as well on Renegade as Silver Dollar on Fighting,
Cowboy Song on Jailbreak or Dear Lord on Bad Reputation.

I see Lizzy as a struggle between Light and Darkness, the
poetic and educated Lynott vs. the Metal Man for The Masses.
Not too unsimilar the case with Doors/Morrison as we discuss in another thread.

But God, Lynott was a split personality (who aint?). How I miss him!!

"Opinions are like @#$%&, everybody got one, and they stink" Dirty Harry.
Metal no, altough I compared T & L to that tradition, wich it is in a way. Lizzy was the thinking mans hard rock band. And sometimes they we´re romantic and beuatiful balladeers, but always with an edge.
Intellegent lyrics, poetic sometimes, but never boring. Excellent players in the band, always. I even count Midge Ure as one of them.
I will disregard the mention of Toto, that was not what I was aiming for, not in a million years. A band in transition in my book, is a band looking for their identity, experimenting, finding their way etc. Early Lizzy did just that, but the outcome was not always excellent. With the albums mentioned above, they found their ground, and could develope in to the Lizzy most out ther knows and love. I´ve listened to all their albums a zillion times it seems, and my opinion on each and every one of them differs. On Renegade, they seemed to have lost their way, and brought songs in that was clearly aimed for Phils soloalbums. Remember, all was not well in the Lizzycamp at this time. When John Sykes joined, it was a kick in the butt for the remaining members, and new blood was injected in the creative camp. Sadly, Lizzys management demanded they call it a day, hoping for a great comeback a few years later, but Phil died before that.
The decision from the management, was based on money, as always. Lizzy was a moneylosing band. Phil kept the crew on a monthly salary, even when they did not tour, he saw the crew as family, but in the end, the management could not take it anymore. So Lizzy´s saga was ending. In Phils mind, he always saw Lizzy returning, sooner or later.

Nice writing & this is just a little fuzz between
two big-hearted Lizzy-fans in the nowadays green Arctic zone.

...I came closer to Lizzy when I made two shows on them on my radio station.
Guess, if my pals on the stations were weary of my vinyls....

Finally; me, I never likes or like Sykes... Too much metal for me.
Renegade was much bashed when it was released & thats where I start.
I wanted to point out to Elmo there were golden nuggets
even after the heydays.

I have found many new nuggets along the years after the ol'vinyl era;
amazing how productive they were in years 1974-76...
For people who havent heard the 3-piece-band Lizzy with Eric Bell,
I strongly recommend to get the albums...
Or the Box Set of Vagabonds Kings Warriors Angels,
from which the Vagabond-cd gives a good representation of the early years.

Well, it only goes to prove how many different views there are of this band.
As long as you´re a Lizzylover, you get a goldstar in my book.

Wish we could share some pints of Golden Harp
in Dublin or wherever & sing sweet lullabys for Phil the master...

Here's a little something for ya to sing for yer
little monsters tomorrow nite..

A Child's Lullaby (P Lynott)

Close your eyes my sleepy child
Don't let a teardrop fall
There is no need to cry child
There is no need at all
Dry your eyes and sleep now
Let your sweet dreams flow
And when you rise know that I'll be near
Because I love you so

Don't be sad my baby girl
Don't be bad or blue
Please don't be sad my baby girl
Your daddy is here with you
Dry your eyes don't weep now
Don't let a teardrop fall
Close your eyes and sleep now
God protect us all

And God is the greatest thing
That only the fools do not know
To love God is the greatest thing
But I'm a fool and I love you so
God knows that I love you
Sleep tight my sweet child
Don't let a teardrop flow
Goodnight my sleep child

There is no need for sorrow
So dry your eyes and sleep now
Let your sweet dreams flow
And when you rise know that I'll be near
Because I love you so
God knows that I love you
Sleep tight my sweet child
Goodnight my sweet child

I dug out the hard to find BBC Radio Óne CD now, from their last gig in the UK islands. Proof of the fans not wanting them to stop comes in Still In Love With You, when Phil sings "Is this the end" and the crowd answers "NO!!" as strongly as never heard since. If I get a bit more drunk, I might get my book with all their autographs in it, and shed a tear....

Lizzy sure had alot of great guitarists throughout their history.
My knowledge of the band in the early 80's was basically their Jailbreak album. I bought Renegade when it came out and I thought it was great. I remember taping a concert from that tour on the radio (perhaps King Biscuit Flower Hour) and it was awesome. The double live album which came out in 84 or so had a great version of Boys Are Back In Town. Still need to buy the CD!
Got to see Brian Robertson just a few days after he joined Motorhead in Vancouver around March 82 and saw John Sykes with Whitesnake in 84.
