Leonard,

More than the ER cover I liked the poster inside, with the color thermographs. Took me a week of arguing with friends to figure out which one was Mick because of his damn beard.

Surprised that someone hasn't mentioned "Thru The Past Darkly" with it's octagon shape. Cool how they mashed their faces against the glass. Brian looks like a pig.

Ablett mentioned it as his fave.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned his or her least favorite.

I think what's most interesting about the Stones LP covers is that the quality of them all basically followed the quality, and the mood, of the music. Thus, they were complete masterpieces from Beggars Banquet (the toilet version) through Exile. Really difficult to name a favourite of those five (incl. Ya-Ya's). Goats Head Soup was more simple, murky, strange, washed out, and it fit the music of that album, regardless if you like some people think it's burnt out, or if you love it. IORR was, IMHO, a lot worse, and B & B is more funny than good. But just like the music itself, Some Girls was a big step up. From there on, however, they've been surprisingly lame. Stripped was nice, but nothing more than a well-designed set of photos and fonts. ABB has a great front picture, but the rest is a disturbing joke of a non-design, non-booklet, non-photo job.

Glad to find someone else likes the ABB cover picture. Of the CD covers I prefer it to Stripped, where they're just trying that little bit too obviously to look really cool and hard with all the shades and leather, and don't QUITE get away with it IMHO. Yes, the rest of the ABB artwork is a bit of a muddle, but that is one great picture - especially at poster size (which I've got on my wall).

London/Decca: England's Newest Hitmakers (just look at Brian's "this lot are MY band" pose) Honourable mention for Charlie's drawings on BTB and Andrew Oldham's beat-poetry sleeve notes on NOW/NO.2

Rolling Stones Records: Sticky Fingers

CD: ABB

Live: Ya Yas

Best overall: Sticky Fingers

>The "Little Joe" of Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side," Joe Dallesandro from Warhol's factory.

A common misperception but not true. The guy on the front is most likely Corey Tippen, best friend of Jay Johnson, Jed Johnson's twin brother. (Jed was Warhol's boyfriend for most of the 70s.) Jay Johnson and Glenn O'Brien were also photographed for the cover; no evidence that Dallesandro was photographed for it. I'll post more info when I locate it.

IORR was better than GHS or B & B, but those albums and their covers are all excellent.
