Waiting On A Friend Video Shoot
Posted by: Mack Jigger ()

Here's compilation of photos from the video shoot for Waiting On A Friend in Greenwich Village New York on july 2. 1981.

Charlie looks cool as ever!

It's still one of my all time favourite Stones tracks.

What do you think?

that shoot was about five minutes from my apartment. though i was only 14 at the time, i always wish i had known about it. That would have been great to watch. supposedly they did a nice (short) bluesy show in the bar (St. Marks Bar and Grill) after the shoot.

Too bad you missed it!

According to Nico Zentgraf at least one song was filmed by the team of Michael Lindsay Hogg!

I remember that video when it first came out. Thanks for the photos. In fact, this may be the very first Stones video I've ever seen. I remember Bill looking a little, well, awkward in the video, and then as if to loosen up I think he does a little dance move at the end. Am I remembering this correctly?

That's correct.
It actualy looks like he's making fun of Jagger!

Thanks Mack, I thought he was having a little fun at Mick's expense.

I was going to NYC a lot in those days (early/mid eighties) and I remember talking to the owner of the bar about the whole thing and the little jam they did. He was a very nice guy but couldn't name any of the songs they played - wasn't very up on stuff like that but got a big kick out of them using his little place. The building where Jagger's standing/sitting on the steps is the same one Led Zeppelin used for the cover of PHYSICAL GRAFFITI - hope I spelt that correctly - wonder what it was about that building......Interesting shots, thanks for putting them up.....

I also never liked the shirt. But I didn;t realize that Jagger was wearing make-up. You can tell it in Mack's last shot. GREAT shots btw Mack.
You know, I think you might be talking about the move that Ronnie does when they are leaning against the bar. That whole sequence always cracks me up. because Keith and Ron are literally just cooling. If one would ask them "What are you doing?" they would have to answer "Being cool". It's just a bunch of posing, hugging, shuffling, lighting cigs, sticking sh*t behind your ear, ruffling your hair, and doing kind of coolness calisthenics.
I wonder if those were the early days of Charlie's drug use. He looks quite dishevelled on that trashcan LOL

St. Marks Bar and Grill doesn't excist anymore. It's now called "Tribe". Here's a recent picture of the place.

From www.vassifer.blogs.com/photos/my_vanishing_downtown:

"St. Mark's Place
On the corner of St.Mark's Place and 1st Avenue. Its heyday was a bit before my time, but I do remember going once or twice. Stones fans might recognize it as the bar Mick and Keef repair to in "Waiting on a Friend". There used to be a rather poorly rendered painting of them on the back wall. Don't look for it, it's long gone. The current incarnation is devoid of all semblance of character.

I do like the Union Jack shirt in the second floor window, though."

I love that vid. I love all the 70s promo films and early 80s video clips. The more simple the better. Just the band performing the song that's enough for me. I don't need no acting or pompous props and stuff. For that, I love the SMU clip. One of my favs.

Thanks tor the updated shot Mack ! Yeah, I had a funny feeling it might not be there anymore. It didn't seem to have that "Here to Stay - Starkbucks Outlet" vibe to it - lol...man, that was about 25 years ago, time flies (sometimes)....

i thought that the waiting on a friend doorway and the physical graffiti were two different locations?

It's the building, they're suppose to be the same - they show the entire building at the beginning of the video I believe (haven't checked in 25 years though -lol). Check out the PG cover then match it up.....I did it at the time (someone at a NYC record store told me about how they were the same building) and they seemed to match up.....
