Actually Jack made two appearances on the Andy Griffith Show. (The dreaded color episodes)

Just right, Shawn. After they went color, the quality really suffered (actually after Don left).

George Lindsey, Goober in "The Andy Griffith Show," dead at 83

Sun May 6, 2012 9:02pm EDT

(Reuters) - Actor George Lindsey, who played bumbling Goober Pyle on the 1960s TV series "The Andy Griffith Show," died on Sunday. He was 83.

Lindsey died in Nashville, Tennessee, after a brief illness, according to a statement from the Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Home.

Lindsey was asked in 1962 to audition for the role of a gas station attendant named Gomer Pyle on "The Andy Griffith Show," but lost the part to actor Jim Nabors.

Two years later, when Nabors' portrayal of Gomer Pyle became so popular that a spin-off program was created, Lindsey was cast as Gomer's cousin Goober Pyle.

For the next seven seasons - four on the "The Andy Griffith Show" and three on the sequel series, "Mayberry R.F.D." - Lindsey played the small town's forever-addled gas station attendant.

For many years afterward, he reprised the Goober Pyle role on the country variety program "Hee Haw" and the comedy circuit.

In a statement released by the funeral home, actor Andy Griffith said he considered Lindsey, who was active in raising money for the Special Olympics, a friend as well as a former colleague.

Griffith, 85, praised Lindsey's spirit and talent, and said they had often talked by phone in recent years.

"I am happy to say that as we found ourselves in our eighties, we were not afraid to say, 'I love you,'" Griffith said.

Born in Fairfield, Alabama, in 1928, Lindsey was active in theater in high school and college, an obituary posted on the funeral home's website said.

After graduating from Florence State Teachers College, military service and a brief stint as a teacher, Lindsey used GI Bill money to study at the American Theater Wing, the obituary said.

Lindsey's early work in Hollywood was in small parts on TV shows such as "The Rifleman," "Gunsmoke" and "The Twilight Zone."

Would Barney arrest him? Would he hang out with Otis? Would Floyd cut his hair?
Would Ernest T. Bass join the Stones?

Today the question might be...
Did Mayberry walk into Keith Richards?

Come on Keith.... the time is now...

Keith would be in the cell with Otis until Andy's jug band showed up to bust him out for a gig down the road.

Keith would re-work Chuck Berry's "Carol" into "Charlene"

A lot of people may not realize how big a star Don Knotts was back in the 60's.
Plus Knotts was born to play Barney Fife!

First time I've seen this thread, so here's an important question and I want an honest answer.

Is it worth my time to go back and read all 9 pages of this???

Some of the questions on the test may come from this thread, and as usual, names and dates will/may be included in those test questions. So it all depends on if you need a 100% grade, or if you can skate by on less.... it comes down to time versus desire.

I heard a stand up comedian once say that "Mick Jagger is Barney Fife's Love Child". Let's face it, putting on a buzz with Keith and the Mayberry boys down at the pond at the beginning of the show is my idea of Heaven!!! smiling smiley

Don Knotts was a genius!
Talk about defining an iconic role.
He could be heartbreakingly vulnerable and hilariously full of himself all at once.

Anybody remember Barney singing in the church choir?
Genius!!!

As for what Keith would do in Mayberry. Take Barney for Mick's nerdy uncle.
