Luther Allison

I remember reading an article about the Stones spending a day in the studio jamming with bluesman Luther Allison. I think this may have been in the 1970s or so… Does anyone know anything about this? I'd love to hear a recording if there is one...

"Dropping out of school in 1957, Allison formed a band called the Rolling Stones, which later changed its name to the Four Jivers".

I was in Chicago in the 80's looking for adverts in the local newspapers for his band "Rolling Stones" circa 1957. Never did find any.
But I have found 3 other bands/groups that had the name "The Rolling Stones" before the Rolling Stones we know from 1962. One actually sued the Rolling Stones
for using their name. That's a funny story if anyone wants to hear I will write about it.

as far as I know, Luther Allison used to live in Paris since the 70's. Maybe this jam hold in Paris ?
He died in the 90's. His son Bernard recorded some blues cd years ago. He's surely still in the circuit.

Luther Allison was truly one of the ultimate best blues musicans, who I ever saw live in concert. I had the pleasure for seeing him in 1997 about 6 or 7 month before he passed.

I remember when I started realizing I needed to discover the blues. Thanks to the Stones I started researching in the record stores and scooping up all the blues I could get. Luther was one of the first live blues album I got. A plain white cover with a grainy black and white shot of him. I played it to death. I loved his style, his voice, and guitar. Then after years of exile in France he returned to the US.My friend and I waited in line outside of Harpo's in Detroit and got the front middle table. He ripped fire and brimstone with his guitar. We were ecstatic. I kept holding up my Luther album, pumping my fist in the air after every howl. My friend doing the same. The show ended and a large black guy came over to our table. "Excuse me boys, but Luther would love to meet you guys!" SAY WHAT!? Fvck yeah, so we were escorted up some stairs to the side of the stage to a small room where Luther was hanging out. He jumped up and pumped our hands enthusiastically saying, "thanks so much boys! I am so glad to see boys your age loving the homespun blues. I lived a long time in France hoping I could come back to Detroit and play some blues and now here I am!" WOW! We were mesmerized. My friend took lots of shots during the show and up in the room. After they were developed we went to see Luther again with his son at a small bar in Ann Arbor called Rick's American Cafe. Luther immediately saw us, and again we hung out back stage and we gave him a package with some blown up live shots taken at Harpo's. He was so gracious and warm. A great man and talent. His son also is a scorching player.

I discovered Luther in the mid 90's and had the chance to see him in Springfield, Ma. He was late arriving to the gig and i walked up to him to ask him to sign his cd and he said, "i'm late, follow me." So i followed him to the back of the club into the dressing room and he proceeded to sign my cd while getting changed. I remember that he was just happy that people still enjoyed him music. He then walked out and played for about 3 hours! Top five show for me of all time. He was diagnosed with brain cancer a couple months after the gig and died shortly after. During the show he broke about 100 strings and his guitar tech was a busy mansmiling smiley

Chicago, November 1976. I wonder if anything of this session ever found its way onto a release.

Good research NF! My memory was right… I wish Mick had produced an album with Luther like Johnny Winter did with Muddy Waters. Hard again was a fantastic album and a great comeback for Muddy. And the Stones totally nicked his version of "Mannish Boy"...

Funny! I was at that Ronnie and Bo show. I was standing at the front of the line, all day. I went with my crew and we all dropped acid, and were partying all day in the freezing cold. Started singing songs, got the line going. Then it was getting dark and all of the sudden right in front of us on the curb a car comes screeching to a stop and four big guys roll out starting to grab some folks. Seems they were cops and someone threw a bottle at their car. Idiots. So we get in and grab one of the front tables and start drinking. Rocked out for the entire show. But my buddy got grabbed by some security guys because the guy next to him in the crowd threw a cup of beer up at the stage... so they mistakingly grab my buddy and hustled him out the back door, into a freezing cold dark ally. Great show! The place was burning hard with some great rock n' roll that night.
