Love Albert Lee, but let's not forget Mr. Picker himself: James Burton! smoking smiley

However, Clarence White was the man (RIP!) among those guitar players, imo. Absolutely brilliant! thumbs up

Thought I'd mention Bill Kirchen formerly of Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen. Has has a pretty good telecaster thing going on. The late Clarence White was phenomenal. I'll throw in Don Rich of the Buckaroos too. Along with Lee, Atkins, Reed, Clark, all great.

This is a great video of Bill mixing in many other (including the Stones) in "Hot Rod Lincoln" - just past " a Cadillac sedan passed us by...."

Saw Albert with Clapton way back when - awesome player.

Yeah, me too, I think he even sang a Dire Straits song during the show if I'm not mistaken.

Not too many better than Albert.

Marty Stuart has a new double CD - Saturday Night Sunday Morning - that I've been listening to a lot lately. At the risk of blasphemy, it's almost like a country "Exile". Lots of different styles, very well played, nice and loose. Even has a cut that sounds like "Turd On The Run" mixed with "Claudine" and one that sounds like "Hip Shake". Highly recommended, great playing.

YES!!!

Kenny Vaughn, with Marty Stuart! and it ain't blasphemy.

going to see them in Nashville, Elmo, can't wait!

Kenny Vaughn is great, saw him with Lucinda Williams years ago.

He also plays on a Mindy Smith song; soon as I heard the solo I know who it was (at about the 2:30 mark): [youtu.be]

Albert Lee is an excellent picker - one of the few British guitarists who plays in that style. Emmylou also used James Burton before Albert Lee. I figure he could give Albert a run for his money.

thumbs up

Indeed he can:

I'm going with Marty Stuart and Vince Gill.

And don't forget Rodney Crowell. Not only did he play in Emmylou's Hot Band but he can write some pretty good songs, too.

A norwegian guitarplayer called Lars Haavard Haugen:

He's a Stonesfan too... smiling smiley

Hey I enjoyed that guy, his tone was pretty rad. Don't think he is in the same stratosphere as Albert Lee in his prime though. As much I liked his sound I'd like to hear him playing a purely clean tone.

peace

His tone was much cleaner in the beginning of his recording career with the norwegian band Hellbillies. They were pure country then. Now they're more southern rock.

yes I agree with Vince Gill.
Even in Country there are shredders now. I was thinking of Zac Brown.

One could easily argue that country and bluegrass shredders existed long before the rock shredders.

Let's don't forget the great Vassar Clements on fiddle. Here with Jerry Garcia - "Wild Horses" from Old and In The Way:

Crowell is a fantastic songwriter. One of my favorites and the Hot Band wouldn't have been the same without him. He wrote this tune that ended up on Emmylou's "Luxury Liner" album:

You're Supposed to be Feeling Good

No one was/is/or will be better than Roy Clark in his prime. Maybe as good, but not better. That man could PLAY.

Albert sits in for free today (Saturday) in Costa Mesa, CA at the Pierce Street Annex with piano rocker Greg Topper. They do Stones, The Who. Jerry Lee, Elvis and all kinds of requests.Albert does this several times a year at this very small friendly bar. No cover, no worries.

Keith Sewell who played with Skaggs years ago can pick it like Chet and Alvin. Gatton was a pretty good choice also.
