There is something that has been bothering me for ages. On "Carol" on Ya-Ya's after the last double stop by the band, right when the kick into the last few instrumental bars (precisely at 2:23) I sweat I hear a Trombone that helps the band shift up the last time. It is very audible. Used to hear it on the old vinyls too. It drines me crazy because it is some strange glitch that I just can't figure out. Do you peoples hear it?
Hey Chelsea, at 2:23 Mick is just completing the verse "Don't let the heat overcome you when they play so loud" and the band is the IV chord (D) but I don't hear any trombone at that point or any other. Could you be more specific as to where you hear it? As you are no doubt aware, the Stones did not tour with a horn section in '69!

Sometimes I'm flabbergasted at what Stones fans see as facts! Well, there are no horns on Ya-Ya's, there never have been, and as long as the Stones keep a sane mind, there will never be horns on Ya-Ya's.
Worst, I'm still very curious as to where you hear horns on Ya-Yas? Do you have some hitherto unreleased version that the rest of us are unaware of? And Chelsea me old son, please clarify as to to where you hear the phantom trombone because the time sig you give doesn't jell. Thanks!
A thousand apolpgies to all that have answered so far and gone to the trouble of looking it up. I don't know what I was seeing on the readout earlier. It is at 3;13. I swear it sounds like a trombone; not even a sax.
It might sound like a trombone to you, but even with overdubs on that album there is no written record that horns were ever added. For sure this is a great track on that album and a highlight from the 1969 tour along with Little Queenie. I would love to hear the Stones bring back some Chuck Berry songs during the upcoming tour.
Oh yes, filstan I know there were no horns in 69. That is just my point. And wow does Carol rock. You are right. That thythm section has the boogie down like at no time before in mankind. Keith has this bumping little boogie train to solo on top of. It's perfect. "Don't let the heat overcome you when they play so loud..." chugga chugga chugga...Uh yeah! The intro of "Little Queenie" is another clasic moment. The way it builds just from Taylor's guitar with more and more instruments joining in. This is where the Stones are SO DECEPTIVE! It sound so easy and is so hard.
While the recording of Carol on GYYYO! is fantastic, I actually like better other renditions from bootleg recordings of Carol made on this tour. Keith's solos differed from show to show, and the length of the solos also changed. Same with Queenie. On these bootlegs some shows had Stu up in the mix, like the Baltimore gig. Other times Keith or Taylor right in your face. When I am in the mood for some hard rocking tunes I will put those Berry covers from 69 on at high volume. Excellent mood elevator!
I just listened to it Chelsea, and I know what you mean: it's static crackles and pops, you can also find it at the outro of Honky Tonk Women and intro of Street Fighting Man ("we gonna do one more". If you listen to the Gimme Shelter soundtrack with headphones you will even find more of the static.
The amps are cranked, some feedback. Starting with Little Queenie in 1969 the Stones built up incredible momentum towards the end of the shows, Mick was simply fantastic. He worked hard at getting the fans excited and that sequence of songs built the show to a climax of course with SFM. No encores, not neccessary. It would have been so cool if the entire MSG/Baltimore shows were filmed. I still think there must be more footage out there. This is why the Criterion DVD is sooo good, with Carol, Queenie and Prodigal Son on there as extras, along with the mixing sessions. I just love that stuff. GIVE US MORE!
ChelseaDrugstore, I've been hearing it since I got the record (when I was 10) and am ow convinced it is a Marshall Chess overdub. Perhaps they used horns from a 1970 European show (you can hear them in the boot from Leeds)
