You're awful bright, you're awful smart, I must admit you broke my heart
The awful truth, it’s really sad, I must admit I was awful bad
While lovers laugh and music plays, I stumble by and I hide my pain
The lights are lit, the moon is gone, I think I crossed the Rubicon

I, I, walk the streets of love and they're full of tears
And I, I, walk the streets of love and they're full of fears

While music pumps from passing cars a couple watch me from a bar
A band just played the wedding march and the corner store mends broken hearts
And a woman asks me for a dance, oh, it's free of charge, just one more chance

Oh, but I, I, walk the streets of love and they're full of tears
And I, I, walk the streets of love for a thousand years
Oh, tell me now, well I, oh I, walk the streets of love
Yeah, and they're drenched with tears, oh

You had the moves, you had the cards, I must admit you were awful smart
The awful truth, it’s awful sad, I must admit I was awful bad
And I, I, walk the streets of love and they're drenched with tears
And I, I, walk the streets of love for a thousand years, oh
And I, I, walk the streets of love and they're drenched with tears
Oh, every night, oh, there's only one and not enough for him
Oh, I, yeah, and they're full of tears, oh, everybody been talking about it
Everybody been walking down it, yeah, but I found out, oh yes, that I
Oh yes, I do, oh, the streets of love, yeah, they're drenched with
They’re drenched in tears, and I, oh yeah, I don't want to…

Produced by Don Was, Matt Clifford & The Glimmer Twins

First released on:

Yes...don't understand the hate for this track... was great in the rain in Sheffield very atmospheric. They've done a lot worse

A power ballad that not only gained momentum but more fan acceptance as it was played live.

I must admit I started off really not caring for this tune. I found it sentimental, maudlin and generally dull and was surprised that they released it as a single albeit as a double A side with Rough Justice.

But one beautiful breezy July night in the Olympiastadion, Berlin in 2006 it made perfect sense. They'd just played Angie which set the scene and as a warm wind blew over the crowd, with thousands of lighters held aloft it gained a new identity. Instead of just being a lament about lost love it was almost transformed into a modern day Wild Horses.

Like Fool To Cry it's not a song that is at the top of fans' list for hearing live but whenever they have played it in concert I've enjoyed it.

Don't get the dislike of this either. To me it is similar to Play With Fire, Out of Time, As Tears go by and/or Ruby Tuesday. It's just a Stones ballad isn't it? With the word 'awful' in it, that heaps of people seemed to have latched onto as a form of disease... But that's just my take...I like it, nothing wrong with it.

A Brand New Street With Rules...

There is some nice stuff in both tracks, but it's a bit too over the top for me. The choruses are pretty infectuous, though...

Is this the worst song the Stones ever recorded? Quite possibly. Is it the worst song the human race has ever recorded? Hmmmm ... nah, I'm gonna go with "And We Danced" by the Hooters.

Have to second that. The very first time I seemed to like this song, great performance!

What? You chose that over Gomper?

May not be "the worst song the human race has ever recorded"; regardless, it is an atrocity to mankind.

As entertaining as it was in Rome, this song is still a very strong candidate as worst Stones'song ever.

They have done a lot worse. Fool to Cry for example.

I totally agree. When my dog ((Cocoa (now deceased)) first heard that song, he was so distraught that I had to take em to the Vet. Hell, I needed help as well. Streets of Love & Fool to Cry should be arrested with no plea deal.

Don't know what was worse, the song or seeing all those people in Rome singing along to it. Fodder for a Jagger solo record. What was in his playlist when he wrote it? I don't want to believe Keith had anything to do with composing this. peace

Agreed dude, it was cool for a number of reasons, it was out of the blue, we got MT on it, and the crowd just ate it up

.....keep on rolling.....

I was just listening to it this morning during my morning exercise. And happily.

Before the album was released I did download a rawer mix off the internet that I prefer to this day. But I like the album version, too. Don't know the source of that rawer mix.

I would prefer anything from Barry Manilow over this. Or even Wayne Newton...
