Down in the Hole, by the Rolling Stones, a song by Jagger and Richards, is a great blues tune.

I also enjoy Good Times, Bad Times, written and sung by the Stones. Another one that just popped into my head is Back of My Hand on A Bigger Bang.

I am sort of shocked that so few fans have mentioned the Stones contribution to this music form. I think people automatically think old black musician when they hear the term Greatest Blues Songs. Yes, the Stones have stated they were inspired by Howlin Wolf and the others, but the Stones style is different and not just a copy of what went before them.

All mentioned titles here are great and classics, but one of the best I heard in the last years was Ball and Buiscuit by the White Stripes.

For me this album by Elmore James is the same as listening to The Cult's ELECTRIC - it's just over the head smashing great.

Thanks for those GasLightStreet. I'd heard about those tunes Jimmy Page stole from Willie Dixon and claimed he wrote but never heard the originals.

I hope Mr. Dixon got the royalties he deserved. peace

I know this is an old story - and Willie Dixon sued for credit on some tunes, such as "The Lemon Song" - but on the first Led Zep album (which I bought in the late 70's when I was a teenager) both "You Shook Me" and "I Can't Quit You Baby" are both credited to Willie Dixon.

Thx Zagalo, good to hear credit was as it should be. I wonder if the original pressing of that record credited Dixon or it was changed when Dixon sued? Did Dixon end up getting royalties and credit for the Lemon Song? I LOVE that tune. JPJ's bass playing is superb (although I know bass lines are not generally an important part of song copyrights) peace

Two more borrows on Led Zep 2:
The Lemon Song aka The Killing Floor was credited to Chester Burnett aka Howlin' Wolf sometime during the 70's (I have a cassette of that vintage!!) but was originally credited to the band.

Whole Lotta Love, according to Wiki:
In 1962, Muddy Waters recorded "You Need Love", written for him by peer Willie Dixon. In 1966 British mod band the Small Faces recorded the song as "You Need Loving" for their eponymous début Decca LP. Some of the lyrics of Led Zeppelin's version were copied from the Willie Dixon song, a favourite of Plant's. Plant's phrasing is particularly similar to that of Steve Marriott's in the Small Faces' version. Similarities with "You Need Love" would lead to a lawsuit against Led Zeppelin in 1985, settled out of court in favour of Dixon.[12] The Small Faces were never sued by Dixon, even though "You Need Loving" still only credits Ronnie Lane and Steve Marriott.

Robert Plant, a huge fan of blues and soul singers, regularly quoted other songs, especially live.

"Page's riff was Page's riff. It was there before anything else. I just thought, 'well, what am I going to sing?' That was it, a nick. Now happily paid for. At the time, there was a lot of conversation about what to do. It was decided that it was so far away in time and influence that...well, you only get caught when you're successful. That's the game."

Blues artists have always 'borrowed' and used licks here and there...sometimes it depends how much is used, I suppose...
Who can truly say where some older songs came from - hence the 'traditional' moniker to many of them...

Too complicated for me - I like listening cool smiley
Cheers

Great list! Nothing against our English friends at ORR, but I think the Rolling Stones are the only English band who could play blues right.

Your list harkens back to the original Delta blues players. I like the early Chicago blues, a bit later:

She's into Something -- Muddy Waters
Just to Be with You -- Muddy Waters
Mean Old World -- Little Walter
Smokestack Lightning -- Howlin' Wolf
Dust My Broom -- Elmore James
I Love The Life I'm Living -- Slim Harpo
Bring It on Home -- Sonny Boy Williamson II
Everyday I Have the Blues -- Memphis Slim
Boom Boom Boom -- John Lee Hooker
