You Gotta Move - what are people's thoughts?

Just listened to Sticky Fingers in full, which is always a lot of fun. But it got me thinking about something. If there was ever a problem I've had with that album, its been with You Gotta Move.

I always find myself wondering if I like the song. I used to think it was the only flaw of the record, and kills what is a stunning album. Its maybe whats always prevented it from beating Let It Bleed in my mind, which has Country Honk but I've always seemed to be able to get on board with that one. Another opinion about the song that has grown on me is I guess its the only real "roots" song on the record, surrounded by blockbuster tracks and hard rock mainstream songs that the public would love. And in that respect, it kind of makes it a bit more admirable they included it, knowing that it would probably be the gem of the record.

What are people's thoughts about it? I've come around to it, although I still wouldn't be upset if it was deleted from the record. Just never truly fit for me, but I wonder how many would say "how can you not like that song but like The Stones?! That song alone is what they are all about".

Many fans rate YGAM as filler of the record. In my opinion it's not one of the best released blues song by the band. I like the live version on LYL, warts and all.

One of my favorites from Sticky Fingers.

One of the best tracks on the album. No other rock band dares to dig that deep into the blues. Perfection! thumbs up

.... Great stuff ... shows the range and scope of the Stones ...
Keith was listening to pre-war & country blues artists and including
a track on Stones albums .... WISH they were still doing the same thing

I love this song insanely. In fact, it's one of my favorites from their entire recorded output.

Originally an old gospel tune.
I love the LYL version because of it's second part is similar to the original gospel song.

A masterpiece. IMO one of the best things the Stones have ever done.

I love both the studio and the live versions. The band did a great job at both.

I love it to death.
It has become a personal manta for me.

Thanx to their renditions (both the studio recording on SF as the live version on "Love You Live" ) - ànd to the divine, ever-present ROCKMAN off course, who pointed me in the direction of the right albumls to get If I remember correctly winking smiley - I got familiar with the works of 'Mississippi' Fred McDowell... a(-nother) joy for life!

A great description Dandy. There is absolutely no filler on Sticky Fingers.

Try to copy Charlies drumming from the Sticky Fingers track. He was good again, wasn't he?

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

It's a great track, but it works best in context: After the perfect but pretentious noodling on Can't You Hear Me Knocking, it takes you back to earth.

Good song. Perfect bridge between Can't You Hear Me Knocking and Bitch.

Yeah, that's the original, isn't it? thumbs up

On the 1969 tour Keith played the intro part very much like this (skipping one of the notes in the beginning) smiling smiley

Never been a fan of this particular cut. I find Jagger's bull negro affectation a little over the top, and racially embarrassing, like he's corking up. He'd pulled it back some for Prodigal Son. Usually they take a cover and make it their own somehow and either improve or make novel the original. This is a rare misfire. The instrumentation is fine, but doesn't really do anything the original song accomplished by other artists. Brian Jones slide on Little Red Rooster takes it to a new realm. There's really nothing on the Stones' version of You Gotta Move that adds to the history of the song. I would much rather hear Fred McDowell. They can't all be winners.

So does indeed Mick Taylor's slide guitar on You Gotta Move!

Superb track, and love the way it fits in side A of SF.

Authentic blues sound, but kind of boring to me.
