A "republican" - literally a believer in the ideals of 1789 - connotes, today, a supporter of the left?

De Gaulle is the hero of the 5ieme republique, n'est-ce pas? The quintessential republican.

So when you call BB a Gaulliste, that means a supporter of the "right"? Does a Gaulliste today support the UMP or the FN?

in France, A Republican is someone who believes in the values of the 5th Republic and its constitution, so someone from left anf right (UMP, PS, mainly).

Mitterrand was from the left and a huge opponent to de Gaulle

Your remark, is relevant, I think Neither ump or fn are true gaullistes. Gaullistes are an endangered species just like too much animals on earth. Mitterrand was not a true "left". Political is political ...
