My nod goes to Simple Minds and Big Country as well, as far as eighties bands go (even though Simple Minds date back to the seventies).
I recently picked up a CD in this rare/alternates retailer and found this band from the sixties, The Poets. Bit of a Stones connection there--they were managed and produced by one Andrew Loog Oldham and had singles released on his Immediate Records label.
Their second Immediate single release from January 1966 featured in the clip below, their cover of Baby Don't You Do It, was produced by Immediate in-house producer Paul Raven, who went on to become Gary Glitter.
