THE ALBUM CAME OUT THE TUESDAY PRIOR TO THURSDAYS SHOW.

Well, that's totally at odds with my very clear recollections. I was in Philly at the time (no co-incidence) and had outstanding sources as to the actual release date and I am certain that the new album wasn't LEGALLY released until the morning after the opening night.

Sure, some store somewhere could have been letting copies go early, but not with authority.

"Steel Wheels" was officially released on Tuesday, August 29.

Great post! Jerry Lewis's boxing skills went unnoticed in the 60s. Mike Tyson or even George Foreman would've been outmatched. Of course, Jerry Lewis went on to help save others. Remarkable and interesting post.

The opening act above and the Stones were so loud I have suffered from Tinnitus ever since. Have had to wear plugs to every show which greatly diminishes the sound...my left ear rings 24/7 for 25 yrs.

very sorry to hear that (no pun intended).

I went to an AC/DC show a few years ago, and there were these girls that were absolutely screaming the entire show. The music was loud, but no comparison to the noise emanating from them.

Anyway, for several days my ears were ringing and I got a bit concerned, I've had the morning after ringing, but never like this.

It finally went away before I went to see a doctor thank fully.

Packing good ear plugs is always a good idea, I didn't do it for that show.

Never really liked the term "Vegas Era" to describe SW and later.

However, "safety net era" seems apt. The devil-may-care spontaneity (which did result in a few isolated trainwrecks, but also allowed for crazy highs...) was gone after Leeds 1982. Polished professionalism was the order of the day. And I get this. But I'd prefer a trainwreck without any safety nets over a "flat line" consistent crowd-pleasing show most days of the week. Even if I paid good money for that ticket.

A trainwreck night without safety nets is still one hellavu of Stones show. But I understand how you can't operate that way in 2014, and Mick was prescient enough to recognize that he couldn't really operate that way in 1989, either. He's consistently been ahead of the times!

In addition to the mature attention to professionalism came an unfailing punctuality. Could you imagine arriving at the venue and being kept waiting for hours for the band to take the stage, until you were finally treated to a "breakfast show"? They'd never get away with that now.

All post 89 Albums may have weakpoints, but extremely strong songs too. The Stones played fantastic concerts after 89, especially in the nineties. They could not have continued if they had played as sloppy as they did in 1976. Brixton Academie, Tokyo 90 and many Shows of the 97-99 tour are an important part of the band's legacy.Of course they overdid the sellout factor (especially during the ABB tour), but in the end it is great that they stayed on the path.
