Ever-wonderful songwriter Paul Simon with the legendary Dixie Hummingbirds

That's my favorite Paul Simon era. All that stuff is great and takes me back to my childhood.
treacle..,
Mother and Child Reunion is my favorite solo Simon ever.
Question: what the hell is it about?

It's about death. The mother and child reunion is a metaphor for heaven. Could be wrong, but that's what I've always thought.

Thanks for the Paul Simon reminder stonesrule, listening to him right now. He is truly a treasure.

I remember reading an interview in which Paul said he got the idea when he was in a chinese restaurant that had a dish on the menu called "Mother and Child Reunion." It was chicken and eggs.

Apparently it's about the death of the family dog,
although the title came from the menu you mention.

If you want to listen to a great Paul Simon album check out his last release. So Beautiful Or So What. Might be his best.

That's actually pretty damn funny...love that toon.

I remember being in a disco in the south of France, Juan le Pin, in the summer of 1987...it was 4:00 am and the place was on fire but I didn't know any of the music, Europop stuff mostly.

Then, in the midst of it all, and I was on the dance floor, "You Can Call Me Al", came on...the place erupted and the dance floor shook.

Great times.

Love your story Treacle! It's why I enjoy timeless songs ever so often

Especially the kind that you almost automatically want to sing along with.
If I may say so, I do a fairly OK job on "All Down the Line."

I used to spend a fair amount of time in the studio with Stevie Wonder and he
was always telling me, "Anyone can sing!" He put me on the spot and told me to
sing a back-up vocal. Talk about humiliating! I croaked my way through six takes and then suddenly...my nerves went away and for almost a minute I sounded great.

Sadly, this song was never released...I missed my minute of fame. Stevie has several hundred songs in the vault that have never been released. "Mine" is one of them.

So cool!

Don't suppose Stevie ever gave you your own version as a keepsake.

Never enjoyed his solo stuff. Garfunkel was what made him good.

If I could go back to one year in my life it would be 1973.
I was 10-11 years old. Paper route, AM radio, all those songs, baseball, bicycles, hockey, horseback riding, playing with friends, all that stuff.
That was the year I was turned on to the Rolling Stones. Angie, Goat's Head Soup, Don Krishner videos. A few yerars after that, all the madness set in (puberty, high school nonsense). Never been the same since.
I heard Three Dog Night's Shambala on the radio the other day, and I was instantly transported back. THe only thing missing was Angie coming on next.

Yes! 1973 was a damned good year for music.

Let's not forget the emergence of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Agreed, that Call Me Al must be the worst song I've ever heard!

He was never the same once they spilt. He may have been more talented, but without Art he was just missing something.

Mmmm...and lucky enough Simon wrote him 'Bridge over troubled water' so Johnny could do a descent version of it....

I agree. I think Art added much more than we'll ever know. I heard Fakin' It and Punky's Delemma today and wondered...why why doesn't he sound this good now? I'm talking about besides the harmonies. Simon's too much of a NY intellectual.

It's all subjective, of course, but I felt the exact opposite. I could never figure out why I couldn't get 100% into Simon and Garfunkel, until they split up, and I realized--oh, it's because of Garfunkel!

Golly guys, I apparently made the mistake of creating this thread just because I like to sing "Love Me Like a Rock" around the house.

Further, I consider Paul Simon to be one of the finest songwriters around with so many great songs to his credit. My sense of things in this thread is that many of the posters really are not familiar with the majority of his work.
